00:00The reason that my husband and I do this, where we go to schools across Trinidad and Tobago, for children
00:13to read with us, is because both of us love to read.
00:18And we know the effect that reading has had on our lives.
00:24The president, along with her husband, read from the book entitled That Amazing Capybara.
00:31During her presentation, she told the students about some of her fondest memories.
00:37When I was your age, I liked to read. I did. But I had a lot of playfulness in me.
00:46So I also liked to play a lot. I liked to spend time with my brothers, playing, harassing them, because
00:53sometimes they didn't want me to be involved in what they were doing.
00:56But I insisted on playing the cricket and doing all the things that they were doing.
01:01And sometimes I found that reading took me away from that.
01:05Her husband, attorney at law, Kerwin Garcia SC, also spoke to the importance of reading.
01:13Reading is very, very important. So you can make your way throughout the world.
01:17You can understand things in front of you. Most things are in writing.
01:21Most things are in writing. You have a phone. You want to send a text to your friend.
01:27You want to send a WhatsApp. You want to go on Facebook.
01:31You have to be able to write. And to be able to write, you have to be able to read.
01:36So you understand letters and words and what they mean to each other.
01:39I love to read.
