Could Bungie make an amazing Star Wars Battlefront 3, or would EA DICE be the better choice to bring the beloved franchise back?
Rumors suggest that Lucasfilm is looking for a development partner for a potential new Star Wars Battlefront game, with Bungie and EA DICE reportedly among the studios being considered. But which developer would be the right fit?
In this video, I discuss the reported Battlefront 3 rumors, what Bungie could bring to the franchise through its experience with Halo and Destiny, and why DICE might be the safer choice given its history with the modern Battlefront games.
I also share my personal love for the Star Wars Battlefront games on Xbox and Xbox One, discuss my concerns about whether a new installment could live up to expectations, and explain why I would love to see Bungie create another original science-fiction universe instead.
Could Battlefront 3 be the comeback fans have been waiting for, or could it disappoint like the troubled launch of the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection?
Important: Battlefront 3 has not been officially announced, and neither Bungie nor DICE has been confirmed as its developer. This video discusses rumors and my own analysis, not confirmed development plans.

00:00Imagine dropping onto a massive Star Wars battlefield, blaster fire flying past your head, ATEEZ ATEEZ marching across the landscape,
00:08star fires fighting overhead, and hundreds of familiar details bringing the galaxy far, far away to life.
00:15Now imagine that the studio behind Destiny and Halo is the one responsible for making that experience happen. Sounds pretty
00:22exciting, right?
00:23Well, there's a rumor that Bungie could be one of the studios being considered to develop a potential Star Wars
00:28Battlefront III, and while I can absolutely see the appeal of that idea, I also have to ask an important
00:34question.
00:35Would Bungie really be the right studio for the job, or would Star Wars fans be better off with DICE
00:40returning to the franchise?
00:42Because personally, I think a Battlefront III could be fantastic, but I also think there's a real possibility that handing
00:48the series to Bungie would be a waste of the studio's talents, especially when you consider what it has already
00:54accomplished with its own science fiction universes.
00:57And after seeing how things have gone with some Star Wars Battlefront re-releases, I have another question. Can we
01:03even trust that a new Battlefront game would live up to the expectations? Let's talk about it.
01:08First, let's get one very important thing out of the way.
01:12Star Wars Battlefront III has not been officially announced, and Bungie's involvement has not been confirmed.
01:18The same goes for DICE being officially attached to a new installment.
01:21The discussion comes from a rumor reported by Giant Bomb co-host Jeff Grubb on his October 19th Game Mess
01:28Morning podcast.
01:29The rumor originated with a Quarterman gossip column reportedly included in a new digital issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly.
01:38According to that report, Lucasfilm is looking for a development partner to make another Battlefront game with EA DICE and
01:45Bungie mentioned as potential candidates.
01:48That's an interesting combination.
01:49DICE has already developed the two modern Star Wars Battlefront games released in 2015 and 2017.
01:56Bungie, meanwhile, is known for Halo, Destiny, and Marathon.
01:59Those are two very different development histories, even though both studios have experience creating science fiction action games.
02:06But right now, we're talking about reported possibilities, not confirmed plans.
02:11We don't know whether either studio will actually get the project, whether Lucasfilm has approached other developers, or whether a
02:17third Battlefront game will ever happen.
02:20With that out of the way, let's consider what each studio could bring to the table.
02:23If there's one thing Bungie has demonstrated over the years, it's an ability to create compelling science fiction combat.
02:30Halo helped establish the studio's reputation for responsive shooting, memorable weapons, satisfying combat encounters, and battles that made players feel
02:39like they were participating in something much bigger than themselves.
02:43Destiny took those strengths and combined them with elaborate worlds, distinct enemy factions, cooperative activities, and a universe that players
02:51could spend years exploring.
02:52Those are some pretty attractive qualities for a potential Battlefront 3.
02:57Different weapons could have distinctive sounds, firing patterns, recoil characteristics, and combat roles.
03:04The Jedi could feel powerful without making everyone else irrelevant, while vehicles and starfighters could give battles an entirely different
03:11dimension.
03:12And let's not forget about the presentation.
03:15Bungie has experience building dramatic science fiction environments, designing memorable enemy encounters, and creating a sense of scale.
03:22A Battlefront game featuring the Clone Wars, the Galactic Civil War, or the conflict between the First Order and the
03:28Resistance could benefit from that experience.
03:31There's also the possibility of bringing some of Bungie's strengths and cooperative gameplay into the equation.
03:37Imagine teaming up with friends to assault an Imperial installation, defend a Republic outpost, or take on a major Separatist
03:44force.
03:44A well-designed cooperative mode could be a fantastic addition, provided it complements the traditional Battlefront experience, rather than replacing
03:53it.
03:53And that's where my enthusiasm starts to meet my concerns.
03:57Because making a great science fiction shooter isn't automatically the same thing as making a great Star Wars Battlefront game.
04:05Here's the biggest reason I'm hesitant about Bungie taking over Battlefront 3.
04:09I don't want a Battlefront game that feels like Destiny with a Star Wars skin.
04:13I want Battlefront.
04:15I want large-scale battles where the action is happening all around me.
04:19I want infantry fighting across recognizable Star Wars locations, vehicles changing the course of a battle, and the opportunity to
04:26play as iconic heroes and villains.
04:28I want to jump into a match, choose my class, and immediately feel like I'm part of a major conflict
04:34in the Star Wars universe.
04:35That experience has its own identity, and preserving it should be one of the biggest priorities for any developer taking
04:42on the franchise.
04:44Bungie's expertise could certainly help deliver excellent shooting and combat design, but what about the other elements that make Battlefront
04:51special?
04:52How would the studio approach large-scale multiplayer?
04:55How would it balance infantry, vehicles, and heroes?
04:58Would it deliver the variety of maps, factions, eras, and game modes that fans expect?
05:04Those are questions that would need convincing answers.
05:07There's also the business side of things.
05:10Bungie has spent years supporting Destiny, a game built around ongoing content, progression, and long-term player engagement.
05:17That experience can be valuable, but I'd be concerned if those priorities ended up dominating Battlefront 3.
05:23I don't want every aspect of the game designed around grinding for better equipment, chasing seasonal rewards, or encouraging players
05:31to spend more time in a progression system than actually enjoying the battles.
05:35A progression system isn't inherently bad.
05:38Unlocking new appearances, celebrating achievements, and earning rewards can all be enjoyable.
05:44But Battlefront should prioritize the battles themselves.
05:47Give me excellent maps, satisfying combat, meaningful faction differences, a strong selection of modes, and enough content to keep me
05:55coming back.
05:56Build a great game first, then figure out how to support it.
05:59If Bungie can do that, I could see it delivering something special.
06:03But if the studio tries to turn Battlefront into another Destiny-style live service experience, I think it risks missing
06:10the point entirely.
06:11Now, let's talk about EA DICE.
06:14Personally, I think there's a very strong argument for bringing DICE back.
06:18The studio understands the modern Battlefront formula because it developed both recent games.
06:23It has experience recreating Star Wars environments, building large-scale battles, implementing vehicles, and integrating iconic characters into multiplayer combat.
06:33That existing experience could make the development process more straightforward than starting with a completely different studio.
06:40And let's be fair, the 2017 Star Wars Battlefront 2 became a much stronger package than its infamous launch reputation
06:47might suggest.
06:48The game's launch was heavily criticized for its progression system and loot box controversies, which became a major part of
06:55the wider conversation about monetization in games.
06:58But the game also had strengths.
07:00Its combat, presentation, selection of Star Wars characters, and eventual content additions gave fans plenty to appreciate.
07:08For me, that's an important distinction.
07:10A developer can make mistakes with progression and monetization while still having the technical ability to create an enjoyable game.
07:17If DICE returned, it could build on what worked, learn from what didn't, and deliver a more complete experience from
07:24the beginning.
07:25Of course, there's no guarantee that would happen.
07:28A familiar developer doesn't automatically produce a great sequel.
07:31DICE would still need a strong creative direction, sufficient resources, a reasonable development schedule, and the freedom to prioritize the
07:39features that fans actually want.
07:41And we shouldn't ignore the possibility that the studio might want to take the franchise in a different direction.
07:47Still, if the goal is to make a sequel that feels like a natural continuation of the modern Battlefront games,
07:53DICE seems like the more obvious choice.
07:55It already has the experience and wouldn't need to spend as much time establishing what a modern Battlefront game should
08:01be.
08:02There's a personal reason I'm interested in seeing another Battlefront game.
08:06I absolutely love the Star Wars Battlefront games on the original Xbox and Xbox One.
08:11Those games gave me the opportunity to experience the Star Wars universe in a way that made me feel like
08:17I was actually participating in its biggest battles.
08:19There was something special about stepping into the boots of an ordinary soldier and fighting alongside familiar characters in a
08:25galaxy I'd spent years enjoying through movies and other games.
08:29And that's why I want a new Battlefront to recapture.
08:32Not necessarily every mechanic from the older games, and not a sequel that simply repeats everything we've already seen.
08:38I want that same sense of excitement, scale, and immersion, combined with modern technology and better opportunities for gameplay variety.
08:47But I also have some reservations.
08:49The Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection, which brought the original games back to modern platforms, had a troubled launch in
08:562024.
08:57Technical problems and multiplayer issues affected the experience, reminding players that bringing back a beloved game isn't as simple as
09:04making it available on new hardware.
09:07That leads me to a bigger question.
09:09Would Battlefront 3 actually be a great game, or would it become another disappointing reminder of how difficult it can
09:15be to handle a beloved franchise?
09:16A new installment has to be more than a recognizable name and some impressive screenshots.
09:22It needs to work properly.
09:24It needs enough meaningful content.
09:26Its multiplayer needs to be enjoyable and reliable.
09:29And its monetization needs to respect the people playing it.
09:32More importantly, it needs to understand why people love Battlefront in the first place.
09:36I'm not saying the Classic Collection's problems mean a new game would automatically fail.
09:41There are different projects with different challenges.
09:44But I do think they demonstrate why Star Wars fans should be cautious about getting carried away by the idea
09:50of a new release before we've seen what the developers are actually offering.
09:54Nostalgia can generate enormous excitement.
09:56Delivering a game that lives up to that nostalgia is a completely different challenge.
10:01Here's where I come back to the idea that Bungie developed Battlefront 3 could be great, but also a waste.
10:06Bungie has created some of the most recognizable science fiction franchises in gaming.
10:11Halo helped establish a world with its own mythology, characters, weapons, enemies, and visual identity.
10:18Destiny built another elaborate universe with its own history, mysteries, factions, and ongoing stories.
10:24Marathon represents another opportunity for the studio to develop its own distinctive science fiction setting.
10:31Why not let Bungie continue exploring these possibilities or create something entirely new?
10:36There's a creative opportunity in giving a studio the chance to build a universe from the ground up,
10:41rather than asking it to contribute another installment to an established franchise.
10:45A new intellectual property could allow Bungie to experiment with different mechanics,
10:49storytelling approaches, and world-building ideas without being constrained by decades of Star Wars lore and fan expectations.
10:58And that matters because Star Wars already has an enormous universe full of established characters, planets, factions, and stories.
11:05There are plenty of ways to create an excellent Star Wars game,
11:08but the developers also have to work within the expectations that come with the franchise.
11:12That said, I wouldn't dismiss the idea of Bungie making Battlefront 3 simply because I'd like to see a new
11:18intellectual property from the studio.
11:20There are practical considerations here too.
11:24Bungie has faced significant challenges in recent years, including layoffs and organizational changes,
11:29while its games have had to contend with a difficult market for ongoing live service titles.
11:34A licensed game based on an established franchise could provide a clearer commercial opportunity than investing years in an entirely
11:42new concept.
11:43Star Wars is a major entertainment brand, and Battlefront already has an audience.
11:48A well-made sequel could attract returning fans while introducing the franchise to a new generation of players.
11:54For Sony, which owns Bungie, a successful project could also help justify the investment in that studio.
12:00But a safer commercial opportunity isn't necessarily the most creatively exciting one.
12:05If Bungie takes the job, I want it to bring something meaningful to Battlefront rather than simply lending its name
12:11to another licensed shooter.
12:13And I'd want Sony and Lucasfilm to give the project enough time and resources to succeed instead of treating the
12:19Star Wars name as a guarantee of sales.
12:21Because it isn't.
12:23Regardless of which studio develops the game, I have a few priorities for Battlefront 3.
12:27First, a complete and polished launch.
12:30I don't want players paying full price for a game that needs months of updates to reach an acceptable state.
12:36Technical stability, reliable multiplayer, and a strong selection of content should be priorities from day one.
12:43Second, large-scale battles that feel like Star Wars.
12:46Give us recognizable planets, different battle environments, infantry combat, vehicles, and the opportunity to play as iconic heroes and villains.
12:54Make the action feel chaotic without making it impossible to understand what's happening.
12:59Third, a substantial selection of factions and errors.
13:03The Galactic Civil War is an obvious starting point, but the Clone Wars and other periods of Star Wars history
13:08offer plenty of opportunities for variety.
13:12I want the factions to feel distinct, not just visually different.
13:16Fourth, fair progression and monetization.
13:19Cosmetic customization and ongoing content can be great, but I don't want a repeat of the controversy surrounding Battlefront 2's
13:26original launch progression system.
13:28Let players enjoy the game without feeling pressured to spend additional money or grind endlessly for essential content.
13:35Fifth, a meaningful single-player offering.
13:38Multiplayer might be the main attraction, but I'd love a campaign that tells an engaging Star Wars story and makes
13:44good use of the game's combat systems and environments.
13:47And finally, don't lose sight of the original appeal.
13:50This is the most important point.
13:53Battlefront should be about experiencing the Star Wars battlefield.
13:56It shouldn't lose its identity by chasing every industry trend or copying the structure of another successful game.
14:03If DICE returns, I want it to learn from both modern Battlefront games.
14:07If Bungie takes over, I want it to apply to its strengths without trying to turn the franchise into something
14:12it was never meant to be.
14:14Either way, the goal should be the same.
14:16Deliver the Battlefront game fans have been waiting for.
14:20So would Bungie be the right studio to develop Star Wars Battlefront 3?
14:24I think it could make a genuinely great game.
14:27The studio has plenty of experience with science fiction combat,
14:30and its strengths in shooting mechanics and world-building could translate well to the Star Wars universe.
14:35But if I'm choosing based on the information we have today, I'd lean toward DICE returning.
14:40DICE has already worked on the modern Battlefront games, understands the franchise's core gameplay,
14:46and has an opportunity to build on the lessons learned from both releases.
14:50Bungie would bring a fresh perspective, but that doesn't necessarily mean it would make a better Battlefront game.
14:56And personally, I'd rather see Bungie have the opportunity to create something new if it can do so under the
15:01right conditions.
15:02The studio has already demonstrated that it can build memorable science fiction universes,
15:07and I'd hate to see that creative potential get lost in the process of developing a licensed franchise.
15:13But I also recognize that business realities matter, and a major Star Wars project could be exactly the kind of
15:19opportunity Bungie needs.
15:21Ultimately, though, there's one major issue with all of the speculation.
15:25We don't know whether Battlefront 3 is officially happening, and neither Bungie nor DICE has been confirmed as its developer.
15:32Until there's an official announcement, all we can do is discuss the possibilities.
15:37And if a new Battlefront does happen, I hope the people making it understand that fans don't just want another
15:42Star Wars game.
15:43They want a great Battlefront game.
15:46Now I want to hear from you.
15:47Would you rather see Bungie develop Star Wars Battlefront 3, or should EA DICE return to the franchise?
15:53And do you think a third game could live up to the hype, especially after the problems with the Battlefront
15:58Classic Collection's re-release?
