“There isn't an MP that hasn't had a death threat or threatening behaviour,” Housing Secretary Angela Rayner says when asked to comment on the incident which saw Australian MP Helen Haines taken to hospital with critical injuries after being hit by car in Victoria, Australia. She adds: “We will all lose out in our democracy if it's by fear that people are removed from office, and that cannot be acceptable.” Report by Gluszczykm. 00:00I think we've seen cases internationally, we saw in America a female politician who was unfortunately shot as well
00:07and we've seen violence that has escalated two of my colleagues in the decade that I've been a serving member
00:13of parliament
00:13I've been murdered doing their job and unfortunately that has become something that we all as MPs
00:20there isn't an MP that hasn't had a death threat or threatening behaviour
00:24I'm concerned that what this does is it means that people pull out a public life
00:28and therefore we have to make sure that politicians no matter what their political persuasion are protected
00:35to be able to have that debate because you're elected and you have to respect the fact that if there
00:40is a politician elected
00:42by their constituents, they're there on behalf and we will all lose out in our democracy
00:47if it's by fear that people are removed from office and that cannot be acceptable
