00:00The French government says it will impose new curfews wherever needed, Prime Minister
00:05Sébastien Le Conou has said, adding that the measures introduced in several cities
00:09on Monday night had helped keep things calmer after days of protests, which at times turned
00:16violent. In Paris, the curfew applied to Place de la République and the Le Hale neighborhood
00:22from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Restrictions were also in place in Lyon, Nice and certain areas
00:29of cities in northern France, including Lille and Douai. Le Conou said he had asked prefects
00:36on Monday to implement these localised curfews following the urban unrest that occurred over
00:42the weekend. High school students kicked off a series of protests in Paris last month that
00:48went nationwide, demanding a revamp of the education system and an increase in funding
00:54schools. The demonstrations have since morphed into wider protests over rising fuel prices
01:00and a spiralling cost-of-living crisis. Some groups have hijacked the protests, leading
01:07to some of the country's worst rioting and looting in recent years. According to the government,
01:13more than 3,000 businesses have been vandalised. Meanwhile, several people were sentenced to prison
01:18in terms following the press summary trials on Monday.
