“You can't vet for what people say in the future,” Reform UK Leader Nigel Farage says ahead of a rally in Plymouth. He adds, “we're pretty much the same as everybody else” when challenged on his promise to overhaul Reform’s vetting system, days after ITV aired undercover filming exposed several examples of racist language used by Reform UK councillors and party candidates. 00:00Yeah, it just shows you some of the Tories we took, maybe we shouldn't have done.
00:03They weren't all Tories.
00:05The most egregious comment was made by somebody who came to us as a Tory councillor.
00:09Look, if you were to go and speak to hundreds of councillors from any party
00:14and provoke them with questions, you'd get all sorts of answers.
00:19But there is a certain, yeah, some of the comments are appalling,
00:22but there is a snobbery about this.
00:23There's a real snobbery about this.
00:25You know, you speak to working-class people about what they think about, for example,
00:32the rape gangs from Rochdale or Rotherham.
00:35You'd be very surprised by what they said.
00:37You can't vet for what people say in the future.
00:40And by the way, the Conservative Party don't vet local council candidates at all,
00:44which is perhaps why a convicted neo-Nazi was going to stand for the Conservative Party.
00:50That was discovered.
00:52His candidacy was taken away.
00:54He was then promoted by Kevin Badlok.
00:55I accept, out of thousands of councillors, there are some people who say stupid things.
00:59One or two say horrible things.
01:01But if you apply that equally across the political spectrum,
01:05you will find we're pretty much the same as everybody else.
