00:00I remember throwing up a lot, actually, afterwards,
00:03because it just was so, it was so nasty.
00:07There's sometimes some things that are better out than in,
00:11as I always say.
00:12I'm Indy Navarrete and this is The Close-Up with Allure.
00:23The audition process was, I got a script
00:26and I really, like, day in, day out, breakfast on my phone,
00:29reading, making sure it's memorized.
00:31I send in a tape.
00:33They go, well, we're going to do a chemistry read on Zoom.
00:36I can be Nikki.
00:37Let me be Nikki.
00:39You're not being like Nikki.
00:40I CAN'T BE NIKKI!
00:42That scene.
00:43And then the monologue.
00:45And I just felt like I wasn't hitting the beats.
00:47I thought I'd bombed it.
00:48And then I got a phone call back for the chemistry read with Michael.
00:52You should go home.
00:53I'm going to go home.
00:53Yeah, okay, well, we just started dating, okay?
01:03I was like, okay, I have a second opportunity.
01:06I can do this.
01:07And what was nice was my anxiety went away
01:09whenever I read it opposite Michael.
01:11I never saw Nikki as romantic, necessarily.
01:16I just saw her as somebody that pays attention.
01:18And sometimes when people don't feel like they're being paid attention to,
01:22you can kind of hyper fixate on that person and make them kind of your focal point.
01:27And that's how I felt Nikki was.
01:28I didn't feel like she was flirting, necessarily, with everybody.
01:31I just feel like she was giving attention to everybody.
01:32Once you got the role, what was the research for it like?
01:35Ooh.
01:37Having conversations with Curry about vocal ranges and where the intensity was coming from.
01:43Is it coming from the eyes?
01:44Is it coming from voice?
01:46Is it coming from the intensity that somebody can kind of have steaming off of them?
01:51And then him and I had a lot of fun kind of shooting references at each other of like,
01:55Okay, vocally, are you meaning this or are you meaning that?
01:57We settled on Mia Goth.
01:58No, I'm a star!
02:03Please, I'm a star!
02:07Which was great for my brain to know, vocally, I have to hit this range, right?
02:12No! If you wanted me to go, you would tell me to go!
02:19And then for the eyes, he'd be like,
02:20I want you to show me kind of what's going on underneath
02:22and have that be an oxymoron to the faces.
02:25Whenever it came to the dancing element of it, I call it the pop and locking.
02:29Most of that was done on the day.
02:32Curry wore many different hats and one of them was a movement coach.
02:35I knew that Curry loved slow mixed with fast to kind of mess with the person that's watching.
02:41So it was really fun on every time we had a physical moment.
02:44It was like, how can I creep Curry out?
02:46But I didn't show Curry or Michael any of my freakouts.
02:50I wanted to keep them private to myself because I felt like they were very sacred.
02:55I was either too scared, you know, fear of perception,
02:59but I also felt truthfully that I wouldn't have been able to make them as big if I did show
03:05them.
03:05And I remember Curry being like, what?
03:08It's kind of pivotal of the movie, you're not going to show me?
03:10Hey, please. It's just me. It's me. It's me. We can let everybody go.
03:13Like, just show me like, no, I'm really sorry.
03:15And so I remember on that very first day, we do the scene and you literally,
03:21it looked like 20 pounds fell off of him because he knew that I could hit it.
03:24And from that moment we were like flying.
03:29I colored my hair and I had extensions in for a film that I did beforehand and bangs.
03:34And so I wanted to give Nikki a different look than that character to separate them.
03:38And I kind of decided that she didn't style her hair.
03:40A lot of my hair is kind of air dried in the film.
03:43And especially since there's so much blood.
03:45I mean, I went through, I think, two shampoo bottles during filming.
03:49I used OI by Davinus and then the other one was Olaplex.
03:55And that was the really like scalp cleaning one.
03:57I talked with our producer, Haley.
03:59She was in there day in and day out.
04:01And we talked about, you know, what we wanted her makeup to look like
04:05before we had talked to Ali Shehorn, the makeup artist.
04:07And we were talking about, you know, I want to get a lash perm.
04:09I want her to be very natural because I want it to be the allure of allure.
04:15What really entices Bayer is kind of the fact that she doesn't necessarily do anything outright to be like,
04:22I'm that girl.
04:23It just kind of happens.
04:25So lash perms, just trying to emphasize everything without makeup.
04:29I brought in kind of my own love of sunscreen, sunscreen and moisturizer, kind of having that duo.
04:37Right now I'm kind of into like the Bioderma Sticks.
04:39But at this time, I think I was into La Roche-Posay.
04:44No, I lied to you.
04:44Kiehl's has a really good sunscreen that doesn't pill with other makeup products.
04:50Does your dad really have cancer?
04:51There we go.
04:55No.
05:00No, no, no, no.
05:03What?
05:04No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, don't do that!
05:10I thought we were having a nice date!
05:12We are, we are.
05:13Why does it matter?
05:15I thought we were having a nice date!
05:17We are.
05:17We are.
05:18Mm-hmm.
05:19You go, girl.
05:20Allie was really good with lip liners that looked very, very similar to my lips to just
05:25kind of emphasize her face to give it that date night look without, again, crossing the
05:31line and going into a territory that would seem too far away from her.
05:36Curry and I had spoke about the no's meaning different things.
05:39So whenever he directly asks, does your dad have cancer, the first no should mean, no,
05:43my dad doesn't have cancer.
05:45No.
05:45No.
05:46And then she pauses and it's like, where is she going to go?
05:48And then you realize that the next no is kind of like, no, don't do that sort of a way.
05:53Again, kind of playing with the audience and giving Nikki this unpredictability of really
05:57what on earth is she going to do?
06:00Nikki?
06:04I don't like my dreams.
06:17I feel like you don't love me as much as I do.
06:21Yep.
06:23I feel like I look like a little monkey.
06:26This is the scariest part of the film.
06:29I refuse to watch this scene.
06:30So I was looking at the corner.
06:31I was like, I know what we're talking about.
06:33But yeah, this is the Uncanny Valley makeup.
06:36Curry had the idea of kind of playing with that part of your brain
06:39when something looks human, but there's a part of your brain
06:42that recognizes that it's not.
06:44And that is called the Uncanny Valley.
06:46And Kay Oja, who is the makeup artist for this,
06:49really did a good job because it's terrifying.
06:53We, in a jokeresque way, emphasized the lining of my lips
06:57and just kind of exaggerated certain features
07:00to give it this inhuman aspect.
07:03So we put black around my pupils to emphasize the eyes
07:06and just kind of all of the little lines in my face.
07:13I like to make Pinterest boards.
07:15I'm a very visual person.
07:16So I wanted to make a board of how I saw Nicki.
07:19And it was a big jean jacket, shorts,
07:22and just really playing with layers.
07:24And since it was so low budget,
07:25I got to bring some of my own clothes,
07:27like my old Steve Madden boots are in the movie.
07:29And that just allowed me to kind of sit in the character
07:31a little bit more because it's more familiar.
07:33Blair James and I talked about colors
07:35and it was really cool to hear from her perspective, right,
07:37on the color layout of the film
07:39and her talking about how, you know, Nicki's like a blue.
07:42And then she slowly transitions into these other colors,
07:45but red being really her signature
07:47and how nobody else wears red in the film.
07:49And I found that really fascinating talking with her
07:51about how her jewelry goes from silver to gold.
07:54It signifies the transformation between the two.
07:57I mean, we kind of see her wear clothes
07:58that she's never worn before, right?
08:00And that kind of seem like, why are you wearing that?
08:03Like, Blair James showed me the bandana and the red shirt,
08:08emphasizing, of course, that transition into red.
08:11But for me, I was like, Nicki would never wear a headband,
08:14nor this color.
08:16What is it?
08:16And at first, because my reaction was so unreal,
08:19Nicki, she's like, girl, that's the point.
08:20We are like, she's not.
08:22And I was like, oh, yeah, okay.
08:23Because again, it's communicating to the audience,
08:25because we're in Bear's perspective of,
08:27is it a wish?
08:28Is it not a wish?
08:29Is this her?
08:29Is it not her?
08:39Ali Shehorn split my part and we put a tube
08:42and Ali's pumping it off to the side.
08:45So everywhere that I had blood,
08:47Ali was literally right there with me.
08:50The blood would be pouring down and really going everywhere.
08:53I remember actually seeing red because it's in my eyes.
08:57So we are wearing a helmet with a wig attached
09:01that I called the Dora for obvious reasons.
09:04Because we had to smash my head through a sugar window
09:08in order to kill Sarah's character.
09:11And so the makeup for this is, you know,
09:13the prosthetics again and a lot of blood to kind of cover my face.
09:16Because Curry really wanted this moment where you don't see my face,
09:20kind of like the ring.
09:20And I have these contacts in my eyes that are the size of a quarter to match
09:24the damage that would have been done to my eyes during those moments.
09:28There's blood vessels in my eyes that are broken in the white parts.
09:31So it was of that.
09:34It was funny.
09:34Actually, I have glasses.
09:37And so I went and I got my contacts fitted for my glasses prescription.
09:41But either I was really blind that day or something was off with the prescription.
09:45Because when I wore those contacts, I couldn't see that well.
09:48On set, I'd be like, yes, my who is and where is and what is going on.
09:53I was so nervous that day because I was booking it towards the car.
09:57And I could see well enough.
09:58But there was moments where there was two things.
10:00And I was like,
10:02How did you get those contacts out?
10:04That's a really good question.
10:06I don't think I've talked about this publicly.
10:07I would kind of squeeze my eye and I would fold it up and then I'd squeeze it out and
10:11fold it down.
10:12And I got pretty good at it towards the end.
10:14But they were huge.
10:17So this is the ending of the movie after essentially everybody's dead.
10:22And she's in Sarah's clothes.
10:23She's tattooed with eyeliner.
10:26Sarah's tattoos on her because she thinks that Bear would love her if she was Sarah,
10:31who's played by Megan Lawless.
10:32Her hair is curled like Sarah.
10:34She's really kind of giving Sarah here.
10:37Is she wearing a hair piece at all in this scene?
10:40Oh, no, I saw that rumor.
10:42I was like, you think Nikki scalped her?
10:44That's what I saw.
10:45I wouldn't.
10:46I mean, hey, I don't remember doing that.
10:50Sounds like something Nikki would do.
10:52But no, that is my hair that is curled.
10:55But there's so much damage that has happened to her face.
10:58So this area is all bloodied and red.
11:00I don't know what the substance of the blood is.
11:04It's real.
11:05No, that's a good question.
11:07I have to ask Ali.
11:08I don't think I've ever asked her.
11:09But it's definitely, I know whenever it's in the mouth, it's something different.
11:13There's different kinds of bloods for where the blood's going to go, right?
11:16But this was safe and non-toxic.
11:17One of them tasted minty.
11:20The blood did freak me out.
11:22Your brain knows it's pretend, but I think sometimes it doesn't.
11:25And so your body has to go, no, this is, this is not real.
11:28This is not real.
11:30The vomit in the movie at the end is a tube.
11:34And the reason I'm closing my eyes is because of the fact that there was a moment when the tape
11:39on the tube came off and it shot in my throat.
11:43And it was the most disgusting, disgusting moment in my life.
11:48And I remember throwing up a lot, actually, afterwards, because it just was so, it was so nasty.
11:55I think it was like powdered milk creamer.
11:58I don't know.
11:59There's sometimes some things that are better out than in, as I always say.
12:04Whenever Barrett gets back from work and it's kind of all over her,
12:07that I believe was a combination of things.
12:10I don't know the exact ingredients of that, but I do remember it drying a specific way.
12:15Like I couldn't move my body too much.
12:17But Ali put this sunscreen oil all over my body to kind of give that sweaty sheen.
12:24And then we covered also with the throw up.
12:27So it was like an imitation of both.
12:29I'm like trying to get over that right now.
12:31Leon, don't throw up.
12:32Indy, you're in a lore.
12:34Maybe don't throw up everywhere.
12:38I think hair and makeup and wardrobe is the first thing that you judge about a person just in life.
12:44And I think that also translates into characters.
12:46I think that if anything was different about Nicki, Nicki would have been different, you know?
12:52And so I really love to communicate through hair, makeup and wardrobe.
12:57Who the person is on the inside or what they're trying to be seen as.
13:01And I think it's fun.
13:07You have incredible opportunities lined up, including Broke and X-Men.
13:11Is there anything you want to bring from this role into your next roles?
13:15Just this ability of, in extraordinary worlds, making my characters seem very human and grounded.
13:22Is really important to me.
13:24And changing their look.
13:25There's everybody in this movement of Monarch Park, about Harvard Park .
13:25You're welcome.
