Research shared at the ANESTHESIOLOGY 2026 conference examined a cohort of 2,028,601 adults in the United States who underwent elective surgeries exceeding one hour, with a minimum hospital stay of 24 hours, between 2016 and 2024. Among them, approximately 145,610 were treated with GLP-1 medications. When compared to similar individuals who did not use these drugs, GLP-1 users exhibited an 11 percent reduction in the likelihood of experiencing severe heart-related issues such as heart attacks, strokes, or fatalities, along with an 8 percent decrease in the risk of postoperative infections. It is important to note that this data is observational and cannot establish direct causality. Here’s what patients need to understand.

00:00If you take a GLP-1 medication, the kind used for diabetes and weight loss,
00:04new research suggests it may matter around surgery.
00:08Researchers from UT Health Houston presented the work at the Anesthesiology 2026 meeting.
00:14They analyzed 2,028 E601 U.S. adults who had elective surgery lasting over an hour
00:20and stayed in the hospital at least a day between 2016 and 2024.
00:25About 1.45,610 of them, roughly 7%, were taking GLP-1 drugs.
00:32After matching them with similar patients who were not,
00:35GLP-1 users had 11% lower odds of major heart complications,
00:39including heart attack, stroke or death,
00:42and 8% lower odds of infections such as pneumonia, sepsis, and wound infections.
00:48The authors suggest weight loss, better blood sugar control, and lower inflammation may play a role.
00:53But this is observational data, so it cannot prove cause and effect.
00:58And the report does not say it has been peer-reviewed.
