Aldershot Town manager Scott Davies speaks after his side's 2-0 FA Cup fourth qualifying round replay win at Tadley Calleva.
Transcript
00:02Scotty, it is smooth progression in the end. I'm guessing you wanted a win, you wanted a clean
00:06sheet and you wanted a clean bill of health. Two out of three ain't bad. Yeah, listen, I'm just
00:12relieved in truth. I'm not delighted. I'm pleased that we've got through, but like I said, I'm not
00:17ecstatic. I was disappointed that we've had to come to a replay because we were so disappointed
00:22on Saturday in terms of our end product. Tonight, I thought we were much, much better. I thought
00:27first half we were excellent. It should have been sort of four or five. It wasn't. And
00:31then you always think, why make sure you get the next goal? Fortunately, we didn't need to
00:35get the third. I thought the boys defended the box excellently well. They're obviously
00:39threat from set pieces and long balls into your box. We kept a really high line and kept
00:43them out of our eight and yard box. So it's something that we've spoken about and it worked
00:47really well. So tough, tough game to come down here. The mentality shift from playing at the
00:53UBB to come in here. I've been there as a player myself. It's not easy, but I must credit
00:58the lads tonight. They were far, far better than what they were on Saturday.
01:01So Nino Adam Malik, he got his first shot's goal. We felt that's been coming for a little
01:05while. He also picked up a niggly ankle injury. Any early sign of how he's doing?
01:10I think the next 24, 48 hours will be crucial. Obviously, he's someone that we don't want
01:14to lose. He's got the world at his feet. Talented, talented boy. And we want more from
01:19him. And obviously, that goal tonight was crucial. It was hugely important to get us
01:23off the mark and to get us ahead so early in the game. I think the first two goals were
01:27within the first 14 minutes. The disappointing part after that is that we didn't score for
01:3175. But that's just me being a little bit harsh and a little bit critical. I thought
01:36the actual all-round play and the all-round game was very good. I thought we looked after
01:40the ball very, very well. We played forward when we needed to. We took the sting out of it
01:44when we needed to because you have to deal with what comes with tonight. A thousand people
01:50in here, 850 Tadley. They're very aggressive, very physical in the way in which they play
01:55and you have to stand up to it. I thought Tadley over the two legs were outstanding. Their
02:00staff, I think, have got a bright future. They're doing a great job down here. I think
02:06they'll fly up the league and I think they'll have a really successful season. I hope they
02:09do. Tough game. We've managed to not become the talking point of the round, which we
02:14were on Saturday a little bit. My social media went off. Tadley were all over it and fair
02:19do. You get that when you're the underdog. Now it's our turn to be the underdog at Oakwell
02:24against Barnsley and I fancy us in a game like that. When we've got nothing to lose, I feel
02:28like we're much better for it. It's a game that we can go there now and enjoy.
02:32I'd struggle to find the football ground in the EFL that you hadn't been to because of
02:36your other job, wouldn't I? Your thoughts on Oakwell? It's a proper stadium, isn't it?
02:40Yeah, it's actually got bad memories for me. So I went there with Reading as a 21-year-old
02:45thinking I was going to start the game. I got left out of the squad and my mum reminded
02:49me last night that mum and dad turned up at the game and I sent them home because I wasn't
02:52in the squad. So that was my petulance at 21 years old. So hopefully it'll be nice to go
02:56back there this time as a manager. Hopefully I have some better memories than what I did
02:59last time. But yeah, listen, it's a great day out for us. We won't go there to make the
03:04numbers up. We'll go there with a game plan at some point when we get to that. We've got
03:09obviously important league games first. But in terms of that game, more crucial funds into
03:14the football club, which is important, I'm sure we'll get a great following because we've
03:18got an incredible fan base. Hopefully we travel up there in our numbers and listen, let's
03:23try and create a bit of history.
03:24Absolutely. And final question tonight has to be where your head's going to be going very
03:28shortly. And that's your old master and the apprentice on Saturday. You come up against
03:34Gary Waddock in the dugout. I can't remember if you've come up against him as a manager yet
03:38or not.
03:39No, he actually called me this afternoon to touch base, not too close to a game day. So
03:44we had 15 minutes on the phone. It's probably the reason why I didn't appeal my red card at
03:48Alchangham, because if I'd have failed that, I'd have missed another game, which would have
03:51been Willstone. And to be honest, it's probably a nice moment for myself to be able to share
03:58the dugout next to him. He's someone holding the highest of regards. Yeah, I think the
04:05world of bloke gave me an opportunity in football and I wouldn't be manager of this football
04:09club today without him because I wouldn't have been in the game as long. So obviously
04:13friendship aside, for 90 minutes on Saturday, I want to win the game. But yeah, I hope he
04:18gets a great reception because he deserves it. And it's a game that we look forward to,
04:22but we need to get back on track in the league now. So I'll be focusing on watching Willstone
04:25tomorrow morning on my day off. And yeah, full steam heading to that match on Saturday.
