00:01The UK government on Wednesday announced plans to start drilling in the controversial Jagdaw gas field in the North Sea.
00:09The decision was welcomed by energy groups but criticized by environmentalists who warned of higher carbon emissions.
00:17The Jagdaw field lies 240 km east of Aberdeen.
00:21The government argued that the project could strengthen the UK's energy security as the war in Iran drives up energy
00:29prices.
00:30However, this argument failed to convince the UN Environment Programme.
00:34The UK is not alone having to work on this with the Middle East situation with the Ukraine
00:39and the dependence that much of Europe had on gas from Russia and so on.
00:45There is that reality. But where's the plan for the renewable? That's my question.
00:49And besides, of course, any new hydrocarbon that is produced will go into the market.
00:55The market will determine the price. This is not a fixed market.
01:00So any new production goes into market and it's a global price that will set that market price, not a
01:06domestic price.
01:08A Scottish court ruled last year that previous approvals for Jagdaw and Rosebank, another North Sea oil and gas project,
01:16were unlawful after failing to account for their indirect carbon emissions.
01:21The government has yet to decide whether to approve Rosebank, which is believed to hold the UK's largest untapped oil
01:28reserves.
