Paid parental leave passes in Allegheny County, regulation on AI ads and more headlines for Pittsburgh this Wednesday
Transcript
00:00Most businesses in Allegheny County will soon be required to provide three months of paid parental leave
00:05after County Council voted last night to approve the mandate, and the vote was 11 to 4.
00:10Council Member Susan Filiaggi voted no.
00:16I see this, that the proponents of this paid leave mandate, and most notably the county executive,
00:24have chosen a cynical and politically convenient path.
00:28Filiaggi said she supports paid parental leave and called for a universal, publicly funded program.
00:34In an interview last night with KDKA's Ron Pratt, Council Member Bethany Hallam responded to the possibility businesses will leave
00:41the county.
00:41Leaving Allegheny County is something we hear about every single policy that we have ever passed here in Allegheny County
00:48on Allegheny County Council.
00:49We heard it about paid sick leave, we're hearing it about reassessments,
00:54We've heard it about fining the polluters for destroying our air quality here, and yet they're still here, and we're
01:01glad they're here.
01:05Politicians, businesses with 15 or more employees will be required to give them 12 weeks of paid parental leave for
01:11a birth, adoption, or foster child,
01:13and the mandate would take effect six months after it's signed into law.
01:17Also, county council voted unanimously to require candidates for elected office to disclose the use of AI in certain campaign
01:24ads.
01:25News Radio KDK's Tamara Rush has more in the newsroom.
01:28Paul supporters say increasingly realistic AI can make it difficult for voters to tell what's real and what's been manipulated.
01:35Councilman Alex Rose, one of the bill's sponsors, says the technology is creating opportunities for abuse in political campaign ads.
01:44And one of those abuses, as we're actually seeing on our TVs right now, from Treasurer Gearty's campaign,
01:50is the creation of fake videos and fake images and the portrayal of those as real images and real videos
01:56in an attempt to deceive the voters.
01:58And while you have a right to create such content, you don't have the right to portray it as real.
02:02Now, politicians who violate the measure could receive a fine up to $300 or a term of imprisonment of up
02:08to 30 days.

02:1836-year-old Marcus Carter is a suspect in a shooting in Swissvale on October 1st.

02:33A University of Pittsburgh student is accused of posting a bomb threat on Tuesday afternoon, targeting Posvar Hall.
02:4019-year-old Eden Schwartz allegedly created an Instagram post with a caption saying,
02:45On my way to bomb the statistics department.
02:48The criminal complaint says Schwartz is enrolled in a class at Posvar Hall.
02:53The university's emergency notification service was activated.
02:56The building was evacuated.
