France has faced widespread looting, vandalism and violent clashes during demonstrations over the cost of living and public services. The political response has sparked debate about whether some media coverage and political messaging adequately distinguish peaceful demonstrators from people committing crimes. Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of La France Insoumise, explicitly stated that people who support the movement have no place in looting or destruction, although his broader response to the unrest has drawn criticism. The claim that far-left media and politicians generally portray looters as heroes is an interpretation, not an established fact.
