After several empty outings, a long walk through the Oxfordshire countryside finally leads to a brief but rewarding wildlife photography encounter with a lone roe deer. The search begins in woodland with birdsong high in the canopy, quiet waiting spots, and plenty of patience, before a muntjac deer appears beyond a fence and a roe deer is spotted moving through the trees. It’s a calm, realistic behind-the-scenes look at fieldcraft, manual focus, and the patience needed for nature photography when animals are hard to find.

This wildlife photography BTS story captures the ups and downs of trying to film and photograph deer in the wild, including tracking movement through brambles, broken branches, and dense woodland cover. Rather than a polished success montage, it shows the slower reality of outdoor filming, self-isolation walks, and the challenge of getting even a few seconds of usable footage and still images.

Created for viewers who enjoy wildlife photography, deer spotting, countryside walking, nature vlog content, and behind-the-scenes fieldwork. It also suits anyone searching for roe deer footage, muntjac deer, woodland wildlife, and calm outdoor observation.

00:01It is day 12 of my self-isolation and I have tried three times since I uploaded my last video
00:13to come out and shoot another video, but nothing came of those excursions.
00:20I went hard looking for birds specifically, for owls, and I came home empty handed each time, which is why
00:31I haven't posted anything.
00:34So, I'm going out again today, once more hopeful, not for birds in particular, but I'm going to try and
00:45photograph deer again today.
00:49And see what I come back with. Hopefully, I will get a few images, but we'll see.
01:19Oh, that's a great.
01:39Beardw you didn't know?
02:06So I've just made it across into the woodland that I was headed for, it was a bit further
02:12than I thought it would be. It is quite beautiful actually and there seems to be a mix of trees
02:20in here and quite a lot of birdsong which is a positive thing. Again they're really high
02:30up in the canopy it seems. But anyway I'm going to have a walk around, see what I might
02:40find. Hopefully I'll find some birdies and some deer as well to photograph. Looking good
02:55so far.
03:26What I'm looking for is a decent spot where I can sit down.
03:38It gives me a good view in front and behind into the sides. And where I can just lay and
03:49wait for either birds or deer. And it will give me a decent background to photograph them
03:57against them. So that's what I'm on the hunt for. I've come to a very beautiful part of the
04:09wood. And it's all coniferous trees. And they're absolutely beautiful. But the little birdies
04:19trees are way high up. And underneath the canopy there is very little light despite what this camera is showing.
04:34and very little in terms of movement of birds or anything else for that matter. I haven't spotted any deer.
04:47But it is gorgeous.
05:09Well I've been walking around these woods for a good couple of hours now. I've been walking around these woods
05:17for a good couple of hours now.
05:18I've not seen any deer at all.
05:24I've heard lots of little birds. Mostly great toots. But again they're so high up.
05:36Having said that, there's a muntjac deer across the way there. It's on the other side of a fence.
06:02There's a dog walker. I scared them from the other side.
06:11I can make them out from here. On the other side.
06:24I can zoom in a little bit.
06:32Let's see if I can make my way across somehow. Find a way over the fence.
06:38And I'll see if I can get a couple of shots of them.
06:47There's a fallen tree here. Which has broken the fence. But just there.
06:52there. So I shall see if I can get across.
07:00I can move myself.
07:17There's a muntjac. Just in the middle of the fence.
07:24I can move myself.
07:24Let's see if I can get across.
07:30They're going further in.
07:36These woods are such a jumble.
07:42of cut wood, chopped dead fall. I'm trying to get a clear shot through. This makes it
08:10impossible. I'm not going to get a shot here. When I'm low like this I can't get a shot
08:28through the brambles and the broken branches. I'm just spinning around and you can see what
08:34I'm in. It's just full of these, er...
08:49Okay I'm going to try going around the other side and see if I can get a cleaner shot through
08:57the trees. Right, back in a bit. Okay I've got a slightly clearer shot of him on this side.
09:06At least one of them was a group of three. But er, I think he's a little bit threatened
09:14by me. He was stamping his foot.
09:29They weren't wearing them, right?
09:41So we're going to try to pull it away too.
09:46Where they came from.
09:48He's gone behind some trees again.
09:52I've just spotted a roe deer bouncing through the woods here.
10:01Amazing ability to hide.
10:04He literally just bounded through the woods so quietly.
10:15There's a little muntjac again, another one.
10:27Just down there for muntjac.
10:31But where was that roe?
10:34Oh, there she is.
10:38It's going back the other way now.
10:53I'm actually getting into the other group of woods.
11:06It's unusual because she's on her own.
11:08Normally they're in little groups.
11:14I found the stump here in this little wood.
11:18And I'm just going to sit here for a while.
11:23Have another tea.
11:25And see if they should happen along.
11:28If I sit quietly enough, maybe I'll get lucky.
11:35We shall see.
11:37I think one of the things with making these videos is that sometimes I think we're guilty of giving you
11:52the impression that every time we go out it's an easy thing to find animals.
11:58Because wildlife of any kind.
12:01Birds or mammals.
12:05Because we only ever show you the videos where we do find.
12:11Whereas, this is like I said, this is the fourth go now since I uploaded the last video that I've
12:17come out.
12:18And every time before, come back empty handed.
12:22And I really don't want to come back empty handed again.
12:27I really want to find something to photograph and film for you.
12:30And for me.
12:32So we'll see.
12:35Anyway, I'll hang here for a bit and see what comes from.
12:51With the next clip.
13:57I'm still just scanning the woods here, just in case I should see her again.
14:04Unfortunately, I lost her in the thicket and I didn't really want to chase after her and
14:10stress her out too much.
14:14So, at least I got the briefest of glimpses and that confirms at least what I was told
14:21that there are roe deer here.
14:23That being so, even with just the briefest of glimpses, hopefully the footage will come
14:30out sharp, because I was just on manual focus for the whole thing.
14:37I think it's not the easiest thing to focus through the trees.
14:42I shall head home, I think now, and grab myself some dinner.
14:55Sorry it's been, it's taken me longer than I thought it would to get another video up,
15:04but then I know it's not been as successful as I had hoped it would be, but I hope you
15:10enjoy it nevertheless.
15:13And until next time, thank you again for watching, and I'll see you then.
15:20Bye for now.
15:20Bye.
15:50Amen.
