00:01We commissioned an economic firm, Conall Griffin, to do detailed modelling on the costs of bushfires.
00:08It was an extraordinary figure because previous studies had said probably 2.2 billion, 2.3 maybe per year,
00:16but they took a far more comprehensive approach, looking at housing, jobs, businesses,
00:22and came up with this staggering figure of 6 billion a year.
00:2517% from lost homes, 20% from lost businesses and public buildings, 25% from lost trade, 6%
00:34from lost jobs,
00:35but the biggest thing is health and wellbeing.
00:38And to put that in perspective, during Black Summer, we know that 33 people lost their lives in the fires.
00:46Around 420 lost their lives from the impacts of smoke, and that wasn't measured as a fire impact before,
00:52but more and more we're able to track these things.
00:55Well look, one study says there's about 5.6 million households in Australia that are subject to some level of
01:03bushfire risk.
01:04We know that over a million people over the last five or six years have been within a kilometre of
01:09a major bushfire.
01:10And what we're finding, because of the pollution from coal, oil and gas, our weather systems have gone pretty crazy.
01:18We saw what happened in Brisbane today, things that you didn't used to plan for when I was Commissioner of
01:23Fire and Rescue,
01:24because it was pretty stable, you could predict, you can't predict.
01:27We've got this Super El Nino that you talked about, normally dry, very hot, it will definitely get hot.
01:34We just don't know, because the models can't factor in what's happening.
01:37So we get these wild extremes, extreme floods, extreme fires, that's what's driving these costs.
01:43Now we're going to try to go step by step, please do eat food for crist somewhere along the way
01:43onto the looking Nursing on your news switch.
01:43Now if you're planning to smoke, I'm a bit off the floor.
01:45Now we'll edit the bridge, or drop by step by step, please do eat food, then break down to the
01:45park,
