7 genius bathroom cleaning hacks can turn a dreaded chore into a simple, low-cost routine. Using only vinegar, lemon, dish soap, and a few smart old-fashioned tricks, this guide shows how to tackle mirror haze, soap scum, hard water stains, toilet rings, and forgotten bathroom accessories without relying on a shelf full of harsh sprays.

The method is built around one idea: bathroom grime usually falls into two groups, minerals and greasy dirt. Vinegar and lemon handle the mineral buildup, while dish soap cuts through soap residue and body oils, and the video shows how to let each cleaner sit long enough to work before wiping everything dry for a shine. You’ll also see practical tips like using crumpled newspaper for streak-free glass, wrapping vinegar-soaked paper on tough toilet stains, soaking holders and dispensers in hot soapy water, and keeping the toilet brush holder fresh.

There’s also an important safety reminder about never mixing cleaners, especially bleach and vinegar, plus a warning to keep dryer lint cleaned out to reduce fire risk. The result is a bathroom cleaning tutorial that feels simple, frugal, and effective, with a focus on natural cleaning methods, hard water stain removal, soap scum cleaning, and safe home cleaning routines.

For fans of bathroom cleaning hacks, vinegar cleaning, lemon cleaning, dish soap cleaning tips, natural cleaning, and frugal home cleaning guides, this video is packed with practical search-friendly advice. It’s useful for anyone looking for streak-free mirror cleaning, toilet cleaning tips, hard water stain removal, and old-fashioned cleaning methods that keep the bathroom fresh without strong chemicals.

00:00It is your turn to clean the bathroom again, and you are dreading it.
00:04The cloudy, streaky mirror, the soap scum caked in the shower, the hard white crust
00:10on the faucets, the grimy toilet, all of it.
00:13And you reach for a whole shelf of harsh sprays, a different deer bottle for every job.
00:19But here is a thing that will make the whole miserable chore simple and cheap.
00:24Nearly everything that dirties a bathroom is one of just two things.
00:28And each is beaten by one plain cheap cure.
00:32So you can clean the whole room, top to bottom, with vinegar, a lemon, and a bit of dish soap,
00:37and no harsh chemicals at all.
00:40So today I am going to show you seven ways to clean every part of your bathroom.
00:44The mirror, the shower, the fixtures, the toilet and all, cheap and safe, and the one thing
00:51that ties them all together.
00:52Let me show you.
00:53Here is the thing to understand first, for it is the spine of the whole video, and it
00:58turns a shelf of sprays into two cheap bottles.
01:01A bathroom has just two real enemies, and each has its own cure.
01:06The first is mineral, the hard water scale, that cloudy film on the glass and the white
01:11crust on the faucets and the ring in the toilet, left behind by the hard water drying.
01:16And it is an alkaline mineral. Its cure, its opposite, is an acid, the vinegar or lemon,
01:23which dissolves the mineral clean away, as I have shown you for the kettle and the shower
01:28and the toilet.
01:29The second enemy is grime, the soap scum and body grease and grubby dirt.
01:34And its cure is a grease cutter, plain dish soap.
01:37So the whole bathroom comes down to this, acid for the mineral, soap for the grime, and often
01:43the two together for a spot that has both.
01:46Learn that, and every one of the seven ways is only that one truth pointed at a different
01:51part of the room.
01:52And one thing more runs through them all.
01:55You let the cleaner dwell a while to do its work, and you dry to a shine.
01:59Now let me give you the seven.
02:01Quick word before we go further.
02:03My name is Esther Yoder, and the old household ways handed down to me, the kind I am sharing
02:08today, and a great many more besides, are far more than I could ever fit into one video.
02:14I have gathered the whole of them into a book, and you will find it at EliasYoder.com.
02:19If today's tips serve you, that is where the rest of what my mother and grandmother taught
02:24me lives, all in the one place.
02:26Now to the bathroom.
02:28My grandmother kept a bathroom clean and sweet with the plainest things, and she had
02:32a saying that fits this exactly.
02:34That you need not a bottle for every task, but a head that knows what dirt is.
02:39For the woman who understands her dirt, cleans a whole house with three cheap things.
02:45She meant that the shelf of special sprays is for folk who do not understand their dirt,
02:49and buy a different one for every spot.
02:52While the woman who knows that mineral wants acid and grime wants soap, cleans it all with
02:57vinegar and lemon and soap and a bit of sense.
02:59So here is her kind of understand your dirt cleaning, the seven ways, one by one.
03:05The first, the mirror and the glass, streak free and shining.
03:09For a cloudy mirror or window, you spray it with your plain vinegar and water, half and
03:15half, the acid cutting the filmy mineral haze and the grime both.
03:19And here is the old trick for a streak free shine that folk have used forever.
03:23Instead of a paper towel that leaves lint and streaks, you buff the glass dry with crumpled
03:28up newspaper or a clean, dry, lint free cloth, and it comes up clear and streakless and gleaming,
03:34no streaks at all.
03:36Now, some folks swear by a strong brewed black tea for the glass, and there is a little acid
03:41in the tea that does cut the film.
03:43But the vinegar you already have does it as well and cheaper, so I would reach for that.
03:49Vinegar water sprayed on, buff dry with newspaper, a clear streak free mirror.
03:54The second, the shower and its soap scum, the caked grimy film on the walls and the door.
04:00And here is a spot with both enemies at once, the mineral scale and the greasy soap scum.
04:06So you use the two cures together. Mix half vinegar and half dish soap, and here is a handy
04:13way, put it in one of those dish ones, the brush with the soap inside, or a spray bottle,
04:18and you scrub it right onto the shower walls and door.
04:22The vinegar dissolves the mineral scale and the dish soap cuts the greasy scum, and together
04:27they lift that caked soap scum that plain soap alone never could.
04:31And let it dwell a few minutes to work before you rinse. And a fine thing, you can even do
04:36it while you are in the shower, a quick scrub as you go, which keeps it from ever building
04:41up. Vinegar and dish soap together on the shower scum. The acid and the soap beat both
04:47enemies at once. The third, the hard water stains on the fixtures, the white crusty scale
04:53on the faucets and the taps and the shower head. And this is pure mineral, so pure acid is
04:59the cure. The gentlest way is a cut lemon. Take half a lemon and rub it right on the crusty
05:05fixture, and the acid in the lemon dissolves the hard water mineral, and it is easy and
05:10kind on the hands, no harsh chemical. And for a tougher crust, the vinegar and a good soak.
05:16Wrap a washcloth soaked in white vinegar right around the crusted faucet or tap, or lay it over
05:22the spot and leave it to sit and dwell a good 30 minutes, the acid working on the mineral
05:27the whole time held against it. Then take it off and take an old toothbrush to the crevices
05:33and the tight spots around the base where the crust packs in, and rinse it off and the fixture
05:38shines like new. Lemon or a wrapped vinegar cloth left to dwell, then a toothbrush and rinse.
05:45The acid dissolves the crust. The fourth, the neglected little things, the soap dispenser
05:51and the toothbrush holder, which get grimy and scummy with old soap and dried toothpaste,
05:56and are the most forgotten things in the room. Now the easy way folk use is to toss them in
06:01a machine, but the plain old way needs none. You simply set them to soak in hot soapy water,
06:07with a splash of vinegar in it for the mineral and the freshening, and let them soak a while
06:12so the old grime and the dried toothpaste loosen, and then a quick scrub with a brush or that
06:17old toothbrush gets into the bottom and the crevices where the scum packs, and they rinse
06:22up clean and fresh. Soak the dispenser and holder in hot soapy vinegar water, then brush
06:28the crevices. No machine needed. The fifth, the toilet bowl. And here is the vinegar way
06:34and a clever trick I have shown you for holding the acid on. For a toilet bowl, the ring and
06:39the grime and the germs and the lime, vinegar cleans and freshens it all, being an acid that
06:45dissolves the mineral ring and a thing that kills the germs and the mold besides. So you
06:50pour a good deal of vinegar into the bowl and around under the rim. And here is the trick,
06:55the cling and dwell, the same as I gave you for the seat. Soak some toilet paper in vinegar
07:00and press it up under the rim and around the bowl where the worst ring is, and that wet paper
07:05holds the vinegar against the ring, soaking, while you let it sit at several minutes and
07:10clean the rest. Then you take the paper away, scrub the bowl and up under the rim with your
07:15brush and an old toothbrush for the tight spots, and flush, and the bowl comes up clean and
07:20fresh. Vinegar in the bowl, vinegar soaked paper held on the ring to dwell, then scrub and
07:26flush. The sixth, the toilet brush itself and its holder, which is one of the nastiest,
07:32smelliest, most neglected things in the whole room, and folk never think of it. For that
07:37dirty, smelly brush sitting in its holder, you keep it fresh by keeping a little cleaner
07:41in the bottom of the holder for the brush to stand in. A bit of vinegar or a diluted cleaner,
07:46freshened now and again, which keeps the brush and the holder clean and sweet instead of a
07:51stinking mess. But hear me plain, and this is important in a room where you are using vinegar
07:57everywhere. Whatever you keep in that holder, and whatever you clean this bathroom with,
08:03never mix your cleaners. And above all, never let bleach meet the vinegar you are using all
08:11over this room. For bleach and vinegar together make a poison gas. So keep to the vinegar or
08:17a diluted plain cleaner in the brush holder, and never a bleach beside the vinegar. Keep a
08:23little vinegar in the brush holder to keep it fresh. And never mix bleach with your vinegar anywhere.
08:29And the seventh, which is not quite a cleaning tip, but a fire safety warning that belongs here.
08:34For those of you who have the washer and dryer in or by your bathroom, and it is genuinely important,
08:40so heat it. Clogged dryer lint causes thousands of house fires every single year. Real fires, for the
08:48lint is dry and it catches. So this is your reminder to keep that lint cleared.
08:53Clean out the lint trap of your dryer every single time you use it, every load, without fail, and clear
09:00out the lint from the vent line that carries the air outside regularly, for lint builds up in there too,
09:06brushing or pulling it out, or having it cleared. A clogged, lint-packed dryer vent is a real fire
09:13waiting to happen, and keeping it clear is a small thing that prevents a great tragedy. Clean the lint trap
09:20every load and clear the vent line regularly. That is a fire safety worth more than any cleaning trick.
09:26And the plain safety, gathered up, for a bathroom is full of cleaners. The great one, again, for this whole
09:33room
09:33runs on vinegar. Never mix your cleaners and never, ever let bleach meet vinegar or ammonia, for those make a
09:40poison gas.
09:42Test a hidden spot before you take an acid to any surface you are unsure of. And mind that acid,
09:48the vinegar and lemon,
09:49is not for stone, nor marble, nor a delicate finish, which it can etch, so keep it to the glass
09:55and the porcelain and the metal fixtures.
09:57And keep your dryer lint clear, the fire safety. Those cares, and you clean the whole bathroom safe and cheap.
10:04Now think a moment about why we came to buy a whole shelf of harsh special sprays for a bathroom,
10:11a different deer poison for the glass and the shower and the toilet and the fixtures,
10:15when vinegar and a lemon and a bit of dish soap clean every bit of it for pennies.
10:20It is worse than a plot, for no one had to arrange it. There is money in a special cleaner
10:26sold for each surface,
10:27and none at all in teaching folk that it is all only mineral and grime, and vinegar and soap beat
10:33both.
10:34So the plain old knowing, that you understand your dirt and clean it with the cheap opposite,
10:40just stopped being handed down, because no one profits by your cleaning your whole bathroom with what is under your
10:46sink.
10:46My grandmother kept a bathroom sparkling with vinegar and lemon and soap, and never a shelf of poisons.
10:53And somewhere between her day and ours, we were sold a bottle for every corner.
10:58The mending of it is vinegar, a lemon, and a bit of dish soap, and the knowing of your two
11:03enemies.
11:04You clean the mirror with vinegar water buffed dry with newspaper.
11:08You beat the shower scum with vinegar and dish soap together.
11:12You dissolve the hard water crust on the fixtures with lemon or a wrapped vinegar cloth left to dwell.
11:18You soak the dispenser and holder clean in hot, soapy vinegar water.
11:22You clean the toilet with vinegar and the cling paper trick on the ring.
11:26You keep the brush holder fresh with a little vinegar.
11:29And you keep your dryer lint clear against fire.
11:32And you never mix your cleaners nor let bleach near your vinegar.
11:35And your whole bathroom comes up clean and sweet and shining, for pennies and no harsh chemical.
11:41That is how it comes home. One dissolved crust, one buffed mirror at a time.
11:47The keeping of your own house back in your own hands.
11:51So here is what I would ask of you.
11:53This week, clean your bathroom the way I showed you.
11:56With just the vinegar and the lemon and the dish soap.
11:59No shelf of sprays.
12:00And see if it does not come up as clean and sweet as ever it did with the dear bottles.
12:06And come back and tell me in the comments which of the seven surprised you most.
12:11And how your fixtures and your mirror shone.
12:13For I do love to hear of a whole room cleaned cheap and safe.
12:18And tell me too while you are there.
12:20Your county and the age of your house.
12:23For the hard water places grow the worst of the mineral crust.
12:27And I learn from every one of you how the keeping goes where you live.
12:31And if your own mother or grandmother had a bathroom cleaning trick that I have not named here.
12:37Tell me that most of all.
12:39For that is how this goes.
12:40We share what we were given.
12:42I read every comment.
12:44And I learn from you the way the old women learned from one another across the fence line.
12:49One room and one season at a time.
12:53Next time I will show you the whole of the vinegar and lemon and soap cleaning together.
12:58Room by room through the house.
13:01So that between this bathroom and the rest.
13:03You clean your whole home with a few cheap plain things.
13:07And understand every bit of the dirt you meet.
13:10And never a shelf of harsh poisons again.
13:14There is a right and an old way to keep a whole house clean.
13:18That runs on understanding your dirt.
13:20And the cheap cure for each.
13:22Rather than a bottle for every surface.
13:25But this week you start with the bathroom.
13:27You clean it all with vinegar and lemon and dish soap.
13:31Knowing the mineral wants acid.
13:33And the grime wants soap.
13:35Letting each cleaner dwell and drying to a shine.
13:38And you never mix your cleaners.
13:40Nor forget the dryer lint.
13:42And you will understand as my grandmother did.
13:45That you need not a bottle for every task.
13:48But a head that knows what dirt is.
13:50That a bathroom has just two enemies.
13:53The mineral and the grime.
13:54Each beaten by its cheap opposite.
13:57The acid and the soap.
13:59And that with those few plain things.
14:01You clean the whole room sweet and shining.
14:04The household kept the plain old way.
14:06Is the one that remembers to understand its dirt.
14:09And clean it with the cheap cure.
14:11And so keeps a whole bathroom sparkling for pennies.
14:14With never a harsh poison.
14:16And that is a thing we are only just starting to remember.
