00:00It's really about love and duty and family.
00:04In many ways, they represent family of choice.
00:12And I here make a rule that a great and lasting story is about everyone or it will not last.
00:19I love thinking about actors.
00:22What you want most of all is to feel like the animals that you've put in the cage together belong
00:29together.
00:30You nailed it perfectly.
00:31When you do surround yourself with people that, quite frankly, are able to elevate you,
00:37that allows you to just say, you know, I'm going to be vulnerable here.
00:41I'm going to be honest with you.
00:42Because you're in safe hands and you can go further into darkness.
00:45Yes.
00:46Because your partner has you.
00:47What a huge story to be trying to unpick.
00:53So you can understand my true excitement when I was just digging deeper and deeper and deeper and going like,
00:58oh my God.
01:00This story is about generations and a family and how they move forward through time.
01:06What one generation passes on to the next.
01:08Our future isn't determined by God or by our past.
01:12Even Cain and the murder of his brother can still choose his course.
01:18Every generation, that family learn how to care and to show up for each other and to forgive each other.
01:24I had Florence in mind from the very beginning.
01:26She is one of the most professional actors that I've ever worked with in 40 years, without a doubt.
01:32She's flawless.
01:33She's, you know, a young actor but somehow still like an old pro.
01:36It influences so much of their dynamic.
01:40Were you always like this or have you changed?
01:42No one stays 19, Adam.
01:43That's not what I meant.
01:44You've got an old too, you know.
01:45No.
01:46We had to wait until we cast Adam to cast Charles because they kind of exist in contrast to each
01:52other.
01:52Chris innately brings out all of the goodness.
01:55I think Charles really wants to harness that or be around that.
02:01There's a kinship or a connection there.
02:02One of the great joys of this process has been discovering so many young actors.
02:08Joe Zada and Joe Anders who play Cal and Aaron.
02:12Cal!
02:13It's easy to excuse yourself because of your ancestry.
02:17But whatever you do, it will be you who does it.
02:21Not your father.
02:22Not your mother.
02:24You.
02:24In whom there's just such a depth of intelligence that meets Lee's intelligence.
02:30It's one of the few times in my life where I felt such a synchronicity between me as an actor,
02:36me as a person, and the character that I was asked to portray.
02:39Being myself a child of immigrants, Lee is able to articulate the specificity of the things
02:45that Asian Americans, I think, wrestle with.
02:48He has this sort of place of privilege where often he's able to articulate some of the themes at large.
02:53I've always felt like Lee is the hope to this storyline.
02:57He's a true parent to the last generation in this story.
03:01Lee.
03:03You came home.
03:05Yes.
03:06The most important thing to me is that people walk away from this feeling like this is about them.
03:13Their families, their selves, their darkness and light.
03:18To let the audience know it's a world that feels really grounded and really real.
03:23Now.
03:24You.
03:26You.
03:27The.
