00:00Birmingham City Council wants to reshape Sutton Caulfield Town Centre. Its £20 million
00:07gateway plan would change how people move between the shops, station and nearby Sutton Park,
00:13with redesigned streets, new crossings and public spaces. The Ring Road was completed in 1977
00:21after traffic had become a serious problem on the old town streets. Brassington Avenue and Victoria
00:29Road were built to carry cars around the centre. Today the one-way ring road can still feel like
00:35a mini motorway, wide, dated and cutting through the town. The council's master plan says it separates
00:42parts of the centre and can encourage aggressive driving. There was also a fatal collision involving
00:50a pedestrian on Brassington Avenue back in 2025. The new designs would reduce traffic lanes,
00:57set a 20 mph limit and add a segregated two-way cycle route towards Sutton Park. Additionally,
01:06traffic signals at crossings would be coordinated. Some disabled parking bays would move and a taxi rank
01:14is planned on Brassington Avenue. The bus station beside the railway has been dropped. Stops on Lower
01:20and South Parade would be upgraded and residents now have six weeks to comment on the plans in a public
01:28consultation.
