00:00And it's not just Uche, who, by the way, I think is playing okay.
00:03I think Uche's been all right.
00:05We've got to get chopped, and we've got to find some different ways.
00:08How is a coaching staff talking about different ways for us to get more pressure?
00:14They've tried some creative blitzes.
00:16We're just not getting enough pressure.
00:19Just not, Joe.
00:20And, you know, Jeff Hathaway said that that was a big focal point during the bye week,
00:25is how can they put more pressure on the quarterback?
00:29Obviously, you can blitz.
00:30I looked up some numbers.
00:32The Dolphins blitz 21.5% of the time, which is tied for seventh fewest in the NFL.
00:39So maybe they could blitz a little bit more.
00:42I know you're going to be putting some pressure on the back end to play some man-to-man,
00:46but, you know, 21.5%, I think you could blitz a little bit more.
00:51They're 29th in quarterback pressure, Joe, 18.4%, 23rd in hurry percentage.
00:586.3%.
00:59So blitzing could help.
01:01Twists and stunts could help with the D-line.
01:04You know, there's – but then just one-on-ones or trying to overload one side,
01:10there's different things you can do.
01:12But, Joe, I think pretty much they have to start beating their men one-on-one.
01:15I think that's really where it all starts.
01:17Yeah, and then you wonder if you have that kind of talent
01:21or if that's just this is what it's going to be all season.
01:24All right, let's talk about the other hot topic,
01:27getting Malik Willis going after a rough game before the bye week
01:31against Cincinnati with the three turnovers.
01:34Perk, I think it's going to be more about completing short passes
01:37and moving the chains and maybe less of trying to hit the big play.
01:42What do you think they try to do to get Malik Willis
01:45besides just getting the running game?
01:47Yeah, no, that's been a big topic also is that, you know,
01:51analytics are showing that Malik looks deep way too often.
01:54And, you know, we talked to Bobby Sloick yesterday,
01:56the offensive coordinator.
01:57We also talked to Bush Hamden, the quarterback's coach,
02:01and they both said that, yeah, more checkdowns could help Malik,
02:05that they're not talking about turning this into a checkdown offense.
02:08You remember checkdown Chad Henney.
02:11They're not talking about doing that.
02:13But, yeah, I think that, you know, and look,
02:17we know that this has been tough on Malik in a lot of ways.
02:20No Devon A. Chan, no Caleb Douglas, who should be back this week.
02:24The thumb injury against Cincinnati, we asked Bush Hamden about it,
02:27and he said they were able to work their way through that.
02:30He said that's not the only thing Malik has had this season.
02:33He said we don't report everything,
02:35but he's been able to work his way through things.
02:37And he said he thinks physically this is the best that Malik has felt
02:41coming into a game all season.
02:43So I don't know what that meant, and he wasn't trying to make an excuse.
02:46But, you know, Malik runs a lot.
02:48He's taken a lot of hits sometimes because he's held the ball too long.
02:52But, yeah, they've got to figure out how to get Malik going.
02:54I do think that Caleb Douglas is going to be a big help
02:57because you could get Douglas and Chris Bale now.
03:00Now that Ollie Gordon is running, you can throw off a play action.
03:04So I'm thinking, Joe, that we'll see a better form of that offense this week.
03:08One thing I've been wrong about, and this happens every year,
03:10you're watching OTAs, you watch mini camps, you go into summer camp,
03:13and you go, man, Greg Dosich, they sure throw him the ball a lot.
03:17And I might have said, all right, I know I said for a fact,
03:20I think he could have 70-plus catches.
03:23And it just hasn't been the case.
03:26You think they make more of an effort as their number one pass receiving
03:29tied in to get him the ball a little bit more?
03:33Joe, I think they're going to do whatever works.
03:35I mean, whether it's Caleb Douglas, Chris Hill,
03:38you know, you don't have the A-chan option anymore.
03:40But I think they're going to do whatever works.
03:42And I think that a big part of the bye week was, you know,
03:46we have five games to see what these guys can do on the field.
03:50Now as coaches, let's develop a game plan that's going to lead to victory.
03:55So I'm really looking forward to seeing the results of the coaches
03:58from the bye week.
04:00And maybe both of the jazz part of it, Joe.
04:01Maybe both of the jazz part of it.
04:03But, yeah, I think it's really on the coaches that you've seen these guys
04:06for five weeks.
04:07You know their pluses and minuses.
04:09Now you come up with a game plan that can get you closer to winning.
04:12Well, get you victories.
04:14Let's just say get you victories.
04:15No, Perk, that's a great point, though.
04:16The off week, he talked about self-evaluation,
04:19coaches looking at things they're doing.
04:22Yeah, I think this probably has been a huge week off for this coaching staff.
04:27No question about it.
04:28The other thing that just can't continue, Perk, is the special teams.
04:32Yes.
04:33The bad field position on one side penalties and backing you up offensively.
04:39The other one giving up big kickoff returns.
04:42Happens every game.
04:43And then the kicker.
04:45And I know we change kickers, but, boy, we really need to get off to a real good
04:49start in the kicking game, being able to land the ball where you want
04:53and make frigging every field goal because points have been hard to get.
04:58Yeah, exactly.
04:59And, you know, we talked to Chris Tabor yesterday.
05:01You know, on Thursday, we talked to the assistant coaches
05:03and the coordinators.
05:04So we did ask him, obviously, about the change at kicker
05:08and the special teams problems.
05:10And really, one of the big things that I've seen with the special teams show
05:14is that it's not just the rookies or the new players that are making mistakes, right?
05:19Riley Patterson was not a rookie.
05:21We've seen Malik Washington feel cunts in bad field position.
05:24Jalen Wright, we've seen him bobble some, muck some kickoffs.
05:28So you have some veteran guys that are also making mistakes.
05:32So let's see if they can get that kind of stuff cleaned up.
05:35They have made some personnel changes the last few weeks,
05:38like Michael Taft and Dante Trader have played less special teams.
05:43Zane Anderson and Willie Day have played more special teams.
05:47We'll see what they do with Tatron Allen, the running back they just signed.
05:50There's going to be personnel changes on special teams out there.
05:54We'll see if that's another bye week thing.
05:56We'll see if that leads to better special teams play.
05:59You know, we talked about getting this first win,
06:01and I know what's out there, the 0-17 talk and the whole thing.
06:07They are young and they're getting better.
06:10Nobody wants to hear that they just want results right now.
06:13Do you feel like they're closer and the confidence is there
06:16to have a chance to win this game against the Jets?
06:19It should be, but let's see.
06:21I've said, Joe, people have asked me, can they win this week?
06:24And I've said, I think they can.
06:25I think they're as close as they've been all season.
06:29I mean, you would have thought the Raiders was a game,
06:31but that's a season opener and a reveal, first-year coach, et cetera, et cetera.
06:35This is as close as they're going to have been all season.
06:39But I said, I just can't pick them until I see them win.
06:42But this is the game that I wouldn't be surprised if they won,
06:45but I got to see it before I can believe it.
06:47Yeah, it's just putting together a complete game
06:50and the defense will play well at times.
06:53And, you know, right off the bat, we've had these terrible special teams.
06:58If you really look back, a lot of these games have started
07:01with a poor play on special teams or two, and you're just going,
07:06my God, you can't do this to this young team.
07:08This just can't happen.
07:10So it'll be interesting to see.
07:12Hey, do you expect Kyle Lewis back this week or not?
07:15Yeah, he could be back.
07:16He practiced this week.
07:17He's one of those guys who could help on special teams as a gunner.
07:21I'll tell you this also, Joe.
07:23One thing I would like to see Jeff have to experiment with,
07:26if they win the point toss, take the ball,
07:28try to get your first lead of the season, right?
07:31Because you play offense and defense differently when you have the lead.
07:35You call the games differently when you have the lead.
07:37And they've been good running the ball and stopping the run, Joe.
07:4212th running and rushing offense, and I think 9th against the run.
07:45So if they can lean on those two things, you know,
07:49you get some first and second down stops.
07:51And then if you can pressure the passer, well, now you're working on something.
07:55But like you said, they've got to put all this stuff together.
07:57It surfaces and catches, but they can't string it together.
08:00Yeah, I can't wait to see what it's going to look like, man, going forward.
08:03And they've been real positive.
08:05Positive, I'm dying to see the game plan.
08:07I thought you made a great point with the game plan.
08:10Now that you've had five weeks to evaluate the core of players on your team
08:14and a bye week, what do you come up with against the New York Jets?
08:18Park, thank you, brother.
08:19Have a great trip up there and stay out of trouble, man.
08:22Stay out of trouble tonight, brother.
08:23You know, we got a game.
08:24I know everybody used to work hurting a little bit on Sundays.
08:28Those days are over.
08:29A lot of your running partners are gone now.
08:31Don't be doing that on me, Park.
08:33There's a bar right behind me, but I'm not going to touch it, baby.
08:36I've got to be responsible for my new Chris Perkins.
08:39There you go.
08:39That's the new perk.
08:41Hey, Chris, thank you, brother.
08:42Appreciate it.
08:43Talk to you, bud.
08:44Chris Perkins from the Sun Sentinel joining us.
08:46Talk a little bit about the Miami Dolphins getting set to take on the New York Jets.
08:51And we'll see what it looks like.
08:52Geno Smith, of course, at quarterback, off to a nice start, man.
08:56Seven touchdowns, just the one pick.
08:59QB rating over 100.
09:00And, hey, don't make mistakes.
09:03And so, anyway, we'll see what he does.
09:06And they use their tight ends.
09:08They got a bunch of tight ends they like to use, a little bit like Cincinnati.
09:11All right.
