00:01French shopkeepers and businesses are bracing for protests on Saturday following widespread
00:07violence last weekend that overshadowed peaceful demonstrations. Authorities have decided to divert
00:14protests from shopping streets and public buildings to limit damage. Only demonstrations
00:19organized from trade unions have been approved. Businesses on the ground here in Paris have told me
00:26they're anxious ahead of major protests scheduled across the country on Saturday. They told me that
00:31many of them will remain open because they need to pay their bills, their rent and cannot afford
00:36to have a Saturday shut. But they said that they were on high alert and that should
00:41violences begin to erupt, they would close down their shops immediately. The manager of a central
00:48Paris supermarket, which was ransacked last weekend and whose staff were physically attacked, told
00:54Euronews that his shop would remain open in the morning. He added that he would assess
00:58the situation before deciding whether to open in the afternoon.
01:15Other businesses who were not looted told Euronews that they were less worried, but that they
01:20could not afford to lose money and close up.
01:48The French government has announced a major security apparatus for Saturday, with military
01:53personnel set to be deployed to sensitive sites. The goal is to free up police and gendarmes
01:59to manage potential unrest.
