It's been a wet and wild week in parts of Queensland with flood and thunderstorm warnings still in place across much of the southeast and inland. Senior meteorologist David Crock from the Bureau of Meteorology says the soggy conditions don't seem to be letting up any time soon.

00:01It's been a really wet week across Queensland and some parts of northern New South Wales
00:06too.
00:06Some of the seven day rainfall totals are really impressive, with much of South East
00:11Queensland seeing 200 to 300, even up to 450 millimetres of rain over the last seven days.
00:17As we know, much of that, those higher totals, much of that fell on Thursday morning around
00:21Caboolture there was 240 millimetres in just six hours, which caused a lot of flash flooding
00:25and other impacts, unfortunately.
00:27More broadly across Queensland, many areas have seen 100 to 200 millimetres of rainfall,
00:32right through the South East, up through Central and Western Queensland as well, and up towards
00:36Mackay and Townsville and the North Tropical Coast too, so most parts of Queensland, after
00:41what was a very dry winter, the tap has really turned on this past week and there's been plenty
00:46of rain around and more to come this week, this weekend folks.
00:49Yeah, the summer storms seem to be setting in, so what's the outlook over the next couple
00:54of days?
00:54There's more thunderstorms for Queensland?
00:59Yeah, that's right.
01:00Plenty more wet weather on the way this weekend.
01:03The focus for today, as I said, there's showers and thunderstorms and rain areas across most
01:08of Queensland.
01:08It dries out a bit in the very far west and the far north up the Cape.
01:12But for most of Queensland there's wet weather on the forecast today.
01:15The focus for today is a large area of central and eastern Queensland where severe thunderstorms
01:21with heavy rainfall are possible.
01:22So that includes some of the major towns and cities like Rockhampton, Bundaberg, Gladstone,
01:27Harvey Bay, Maryborough, maybe even the Sunshine Coast to Womba, also out west to Emerald and
01:32Roma.
01:33So those sort of areas could see severe thunderstorm warnings.
01:37Today we saw some warnings in some of those areas yesterday as well.
01:41And then tomorrow the focus moves a bit further south and a bit further west.
01:45So again, there's a very large area of southern and western and southeast Queensland, which
01:50could see severe thunderstorms tomorrow.
01:52That includes Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, as well as pretty much all of southwestern Queensland.
01:58So we've sort of been in a week of quite rainy conditions, really unusual for this time
02:03of year, a bit more typical of January or February than what we would typically see
02:07with, you know, springtime storms in Queensland at this time of year.
02:11But it will tend more towards that sort of springtime storm story, particularly Sunday
02:17and particularly Monday.
02:18So still plenty of rain around, but a bit more isolated and a bit more of those typical
02:22springtime storms on Sunday and then again on Monday.
02:25Okay.
02:26And where's this system sort of moving, David?
02:28Is it heading towards New South Wales as we get into next week?
02:34Yeah, it is.
02:35In fact, it's going to be a wet and stormy weekend for much of eastern and southern Australia
02:40as well.
02:40So the blocking high that's been bringing all that moisture and all that rainfall to
02:44Queensland, that's pulling a lot of the moisture south now over the weekend with a cold front
02:50that's coming up from the west as well.
02:51So those two systems combining, bringing in all that tropical moisture.
02:54So we're seeing, we're seeing some rain and some storms already this morning around South
02:57Australia, Victoria and even parts of Tasmania as well.
03:01So that cold front is going to bring a risk of severe storms to parts of South Australia
03:05and Victoria today, maybe including parts of Melbourne, Adelaide less likely to see a severe
03:10thunderstorm today.
03:11And then tomorrow on the broad scale is really sort of the peak day.
03:15So tomorrow on Sunday, we're expecting a major severe thunderstorm outbreak across particularly
03:20western New South Wales, the ACT, so including Canberra and then up through western New South
03:25Wales, some of the major towns like Dubbo, Orange and further north as well, maybe Tamworth
03:29and right up into southern Queensland, as I mentioned as well.
03:33So there'll be plenty of severe thunderstorms around eastern Australia, southern Australia
03:38today, but particularly tomorrow and then also on Monday.
