00:00Indian got associated with all things full of discrimination and ignorance and even violence,
00:09all things regressive, which basically means that if there is something more progressive
00:14and enlightened, then instinctively, a lot of intellectuals do not want to attach the
00:21word Indian to that.
00:23It is a telling commentary on brand India.
00:28You know, if something is regressive, you can very comfortably call it Indian.
00:33But if something is extremely advanced in terms of the broadness of thought behind it,
00:41in terms of the spirit of ruthless inquiry behind it, we hesitate in calling it Indian.
00:48So, liberty and liberation are very good examples.
00:51So, liberty is taken as a Western concept.
00:55We relate that to the French Revolution and those things.
00:59Nobody should be able to oppress me.
01:01Correct.
01:02But then liberation is about the individual not succeeding in oppressing himself.
01:08Correct.
01:08Nobody else exploits me.
01:10That is my liberty.
01:11But liberation is that I do not exploit myself.
01:14Correct.
01:15And liberation is far ahead of liberty in that sense.
01:18We need both, obviously.
01:20We do not want the state or society to oppress the individual.
01:24But more importantly, we do not want the individual to oppress himself.
01:28That's the kind of advancement in thought that is already available in the Indian corpus.
01:36But then Brand India lost it.
