In 1932, Western Australia faced a truly bizarre crisis after twenty thousand emus migrated inland and devastated wheat crops. Desperate farmers, many of them World War One veterans, asked the government for help. The Minister of Defence deployed military troops armed with Lewis automatic machine guns to solve the issue.
Major G.P.W. Meredith led the military operation, expecting an easy victory against the flightless birds. However, the emus proved surprisingly tactical, scattering in small groups whenever gunfire started. The heavy machine guns frequently jammed, and the extremely fast birds easily outran the army vehicles.
After spending thousands of rounds of ammunition with very few birds killed, the military officially withdrew. The emus effectively won the conflict, making it one of the most unusual military defeats in human history.
