00:00Listen, if you're in Gotham, murder is on the table.
00:03I have, like, really stretchy skin.
00:06That is, that is stretchy skin.
00:07Thank you for that.
00:09No, thank you for giving me the platform to be able to show my stretchy skin.
00:13I'm willing to...
00:14Dip your toe in.
00:15Dip my toe into a steak pig.
00:17Tom, congratulations, buddy.
00:20What a disgustingly entertaining movie.
00:23I didn't know what I expected when I went in, but I came out thoroughly entertaining.
00:26I hope people absolutely love it.
00:28James Gunn said your casting came at the end of an incredibly exhaustive search,
00:34which included hundreds of people.
00:37Thousands.
00:37Hundreds of millions.
00:38Yeah, millions of people.
00:40Vying for, this is official, vying for this role.
00:42Why do you think that is?
00:44Why do you think it was so difficult to cast?
00:45And what the hell did you do in your audition?
00:49I, in my audition, turned up and was aware that we may have comparative to other films
00:56within this kind of space, budgetary restraints, and I have, like, really stretchy skin.
01:03That is, that is stretchy skin.
01:05Thank you for that.
01:06No, thank you for giving me the platform to be able to show my stretchy skin.
01:10And I think that was the clincher, that I have, I am the stretchiest skinned actor in Britain.
01:18Let's assume, I mean, who's going to verify that, so...
01:21That's me laying down the stretchy skin gauntlet.
01:23Let's get that, let's get that on your Wikipedia page as soon as we can.
01:27In the time since this was announced, I can only imagine your life has gone to a bit of overdrive.
01:34It hasn't, actually.
01:35Really?
01:35Because I wondered if there's been any tangible sort of difference in your day today.
01:39Like, can you still go into a Greggs and that kind of thing?
01:41Yeah, 100%.
01:42I think that the Greggs steak bake would actually be my pick over the sausage roll.
01:53Also, they do very good jam donuts.
01:56It's quite bold to choose something over the sausage roll.
01:59I feel like that's kind of...
02:00I know.
02:01That's a very, like, British staple now.
02:02That's part of the culture.
02:03Are you a meat eater?
02:04I am a meat eater.
02:05I know that the vegetarian one actually tastes like...
02:07It's supposed to be really good.
02:08It's supposed to be as good.
02:08But then when you give me the option of the two, I'm like...
02:10Yeah.
02:11I'm going to go with the meat eater.
02:12Yeah, I get that.
02:13Yeah, I don't know if that is...
02:15Like, I'm willing to...
02:17I'm willing to...
02:19Dip your toe in.
02:19Dip my toe into a steak bake.
02:23I can only imagine that would burn severely.
02:25I love the fact that this movie is set in the same universe as the kind of very wholesome
02:32Superman we get now.
02:33Because it feels like if he sort of stepped into this world, like Clark Kent would need
02:38therapy.
02:39The kind of extreme lens...
02:40He's not ready for it.
02:41I don't imagine he is.
02:42I'd like to grab him by his cape and drag him down into the sewers with me.
02:46That would be beautiful.
02:48But I do wonder, did you ever fear...
02:50Did you guys ever fear that someone higher up would ever kind of step in as this movie's
02:55been made and suggest you guys might have kind of gone too far for that brand and then
03:00possibly bump you off into kind of the Elseworlds territory?
03:03And would you have minded if they said, actually, you exist in a different world because this
03:06is a bit too much?
03:07Or would it have been a shame to close the doors of the possibilities?
03:10I think to James Gunn and Peter Safran's great credit and DC Studios credit, it's something
03:16that we were given on this.
03:20It was like real license just to tell this story and to kind of like within whichever universe
03:30we wanted to.
03:32Do you know what I think is really great about what Peter Safran and James Gunn are doing
03:35at DC is the ambition of telling the best story possible without a necessary view on that
03:48just being a jigsaw piece and a bigger thing?
03:51And then I think you cross the bridge of incorporating different characters together.
03:58when that comes is something that I'm excited by beyond just establishing something to have
04:05a payoff at a later point in time.
04:06You can do two things at the same time without paying too much heed to the payoff as opposed
04:13to the initial story.
04:15I think that was the strength of Marvel for a number of years.
04:17They just made really good movies and then they would just give you a little teaser at the
04:20end of where it could go.
04:21Finally, we've had a few of these movies of kind of villain turned anti-hero types made
04:29over the years, redeemable characters, but I wondered with the course of this film, which
04:35you guys have very cleverly done, that you're really with Matt for a long period of time
04:40until towards the end, do you see him as irredeemable at this stage?
04:46Do you see him as your classic villain fare?
04:49Is that what you would want to explore more with him in the future?
04:51Should you do some more or is he there to be redeemed?
04:56I think what's really interesting throughout this is that Matt's actions to listen, if you're
05:04in Gotham, murder is on the table as a socially acceptable thing.
05:10And it's a kind of risk you run is maybe getting murdered or maybe murdering someone in Gotham.
05:17So with that in mind, what happens in the future is that Matt's actions are just justified to a point.
05:23And I think once he's crossed a certain Rubicon, I don't think there is any going back for him.
05:29But there's a real, you know, saving, establishing a villain who's like maniacal and nihilistic and is just sort of,
05:37you know, being destructive for destruction's sake.
05:39What you do is you set up a platform for a character who feasibly could be, having experienced, you know,
05:49deep trauma, loss and pain, could be justified in wanting to burn everything to the ground.
05:56Because if I'm going down, you're coming down with me.
05:58Very pro-murder answer to that.
06:00Matt, I, I, yeah, I think Matt, Matt, I don't know if he's pro-murder, he, like, does what, what
06:07needs to be done.
06:08Well, I hope to see him doing what needs to be done in the future if possible.
06:11I find this, like, silly and really entertaining and I hope to see a lot more of it.
06:16It's weird, isn't it?
06:17Yeah, it's really weird, but in a good way.
06:19Thanks so much for your time.
06:20And hopefully I'll see you down the line.
06:21Thanks, man.
06:21Thanks, man.
