00:00Please welcome to the mound, Reed Richards!
00:03Oh, this is different.
00:04Man, these ceremonial first pitches are getting bigger.
00:08Friday night, in the middle of the World Series,
00:11a Marvel hero stretched his arm across a baseball field and threw out a first pitch.
00:16A few seconds later, Dr. Doom appeared in the sky over the ballpark,
00:21and a Major League slugger told his teammates it was time to go.
00:25That was the whole minute, and plenty of fans called it a letdown.
00:30But look closer.
00:31Hidden inside that ballpark are three details that change how we read the start of Avengers Doomsday,
00:38and one of them may explain why Marvel chose a baseball game in the first place.
00:42The preview aired on Fox on Friday, October 23rd,
00:46during Game 1 between the Tampa Bay Rays and the Milwaukee Brewers.
00:50It was a partnership with Major League Baseball,
00:53and MLB set the table earlier in the week with a short clip.
00:56Five players on a field, the sky turning green, the Avengers logo overhead.
01:02Bryce Harper, Freddie Freeman, Jacob Misurowski, Junior Caminero, and Randy Arrozarena.
01:08All five show up in the finished piece, reacting from the dugout.
01:12Marvel was careful with its wording, though.
01:15It never promised a trailer.
01:17It called this a preview, a special look.
01:20Remember that, because it explains the reaction we'll get to in a minute.
01:23The footage opens with the words Earth 828 on screen.
01:28That's the Fantastic Four's home,
01:30the retro-futuristic universe from the Fantastic Four First Steps.
01:34The setting is Ebbets Field, the old Brooklyn Dodgers ballpark,
01:38which came down in 1960 in our world.
01:41In this one, a Dodgers championship banner still hangs there,
01:45which suggests the team never left Brooklyn.
01:47Pedro Pascal's Reed Richards, wearing a Dodgers cap,
01:51is welcomed to the mound like any celebrity guest,
01:54with the thing standing nearby.
01:56Reed winds up, his arm stretches absurdly far,
02:00and the pitch flies.
02:02It's played for laughs,
02:03but it's also a rare look at Reed's powers in a casual moment instead of a crisis.
02:09Around that, the players trade jokes.
02:12One says you could trust Captain America on the mound.
02:14A teammate fires back.
02:16Depends which Captain America you mean.
02:18Hold that thought,
02:19because the footage then cuts to Avengers Tower,
02:22where Paul Rudd's Scott Lang turns to a hero beside him for backup.
02:26Right, Cap?
02:27Then he catches himself.
02:29I mean, Steve.
02:30Right, Steve?
02:31Steve Rogers is back,
02:33but the shield belongs to Sam Wilson,
02:36who is standing right there as Captain America,
02:38and Scott just gave the title to the wrong man.
02:41It's a throwaway joke that does real work.
02:44Steve isn't taking his old job back.
02:47Sam is Cap.
02:48Steve is Steve.
02:50Be honest, though.
02:51When Chris Evans walked back into the MCU,
02:54did part of you want him to pick that shield up again?
02:56Say it in the comments.
02:58I genuinely want to know where you stand.
03:00And if this breakdown has been useful so far,
03:02hit the like button.
03:03It helps more MCU fans find it before the movie arrives.
03:07The other new beat has Thor and Steve talking in what looks like the new Avengers Tower
03:12about whether Steve can still wield Mjolnir.
03:15That goes back to Endgame,
03:16where Steve lifted the hammer in the final battle and left Thor stunned.
03:20Earlier footage shown at CinemaCon,
03:23as The Wrap described it,
03:24went further.
03:26Thor says it's impossible,
03:27and Steve calls the hammer to his hand.
03:30In the version the Source video describes,
03:32this teaser plays it lighter,
03:34like an older brother borrowing something from a younger one.
03:37Steve asks if Thor minds,
03:39and Thor admits that,
03:40actually,
03:41he does.
03:41After years apart,
03:43it's a small moment,
03:45and it lands.
03:46So,
03:47why open on a baseball game?
03:49Start with Kevin Feige,
03:50who said the Baxter building,
03:52which held four or five people in the Fantastic Four film,
03:55will be packed in doomsday.
03:57Then,
03:58there's the scene's backstory.
03:59During production,
04:01insider Daniel Richtman reported that Marvel was filming a baseball game on the Fantastic Four's Earth.
04:07One rumor says it was first shot as a post-credits scene for First Steps,
04:11a film whose actual post-credits scene ends with Doom approaching Franklin.
04:16Marvel hasn't confirmed that,
04:17but if it's true,
04:19the ballpark isn't a gimmick.
04:21It may be the very afternoon Doom shows up at the Baxter building.
04:25A leaked description of the full scene goes further,
04:28and I'll treat it as a rumor.
04:30It says the game is interrupted by an alert.
04:33Reed rushes to the Baxter building,
04:35and finds Doom waiting with Sue and Franklin.
04:38Reed and Doom then hunt for anomalies on their Earth,
04:41and detect three unusual energy sources.
04:44Tracing them leads to a bearded Steve Rogers,
04:47living quietly with Peggy and their son James,
04:50with no idea the Fantastic Four exist.
04:53They explain the situation,
04:54and Steve agrees to help.
04:56The teaser shows none of this,
04:58and one version I've seen even puts Steve in the stands at the ballgame,
05:03which the teaser doesn't show either.
05:05If it's real,
05:06it snaps onto Avengers Endgame Encore,
05:09the re-release that added a new ending to Steve's story.
05:13After his dance with Peggy,
05:14there's a knock at the door.
05:16It's Loki, in his TVA gear,
05:18telling them he can help.
05:20The Russo brothers said that's where Doomsday is born.
05:23Reports claim Loki warned that the TVA planned to prune their timeline,
05:28then moved Steve, Peggy, and their son to Earth-828.
05:33That part is unconfirmed,
05:35but notice what it would mean.
05:37Steve's happy ending,
05:38and the Fantastic Four's world are the same story.
05:41Now, one more clue.
05:43This week,
05:44Variety asked Pedro Pascal for a line from Doomsday,
05:48and he offered one.
05:49It's good to see you again.
05:51He didn't say who Reed is talking to.
05:53The obvious guess is Doom,
05:56since earlier trailers show Reed demanding to know whether Doom did something,
06:00so these two clearly have history.
06:02But with universes colliding,
06:05Reed could be greeting anyone.
06:06My guess is still Doom,
06:08which means the first words between them might be warm.
06:12So who do you think it is?
06:14Doom, Steve, or someone we haven't met?
06:17Drop your guess below.
06:19Zoom out.
06:20According to Encore,
06:21the final incursion pits three Earths against each other.
06:25616, the Avengers home,
06:27828, the Fantastic Four's,
06:30and 10005, the X-Men's.
06:33Reports say six universes appear in the film overall.
06:37Leaks claim the heroes try to save the main three
06:40by placing a repulsor cannon on each one,
06:43pushing the others away,
06:44with Doom helping until something goes wrong.
06:47That would explain Reed asking Doom if he did it.
06:51Again, rumor, not confirmed.
06:53What is confirmed is Doom's warning in the teaser.
06:56You have lived stolen lives,
06:59but now you must give them back.
07:02So, was it enough?
07:04The Wrap reported that many fans were underwhelmed,
07:07since Marvel promised a new look
07:09and delivered only a few fresh glimpses.
07:12I see the point,
07:13but I'm on the other side.
07:15We saw Reed, Thor, Steve, Sam's team,
07:18the X-Men, the Wakandans, and Doom,
07:21and we still know almost nothing about the final battle.
07:25Rumors point to Latveria,
07:26but Marvel hasn't shown a frame.
07:29That restraint is a choice,
07:31and I think it's a smart one.
07:32Steve also looks noticeably fresher here
07:35than in earlier promos,
07:36where he seemed older and more worn down.
07:39What's next?
07:40One scooper claims the next trailer
07:42arrives around mid-November,
07:44about a month before the December 18th release,
07:47plus a Disney Plus exclusive look.
07:50Marvel hasn't confirmed either.
07:52So tell me in the comments,
07:53satisfied or hoping for more?
07:56What was your best moment?
07:58And what do you think Doomsday actually opens with?
