In 1882, construction began on the Sagrada Família cathedral in Barcelona, Spain. Architect Antoni Gaudí took over the project a year later, completely redesigning it into a breathtaking masterpiece of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles. Gaudí knew he would never live to see his massive creation completed, devoting the last years of his life entirely to the project until his death in 1926.

Progress was severely interrupted by the Spanish Civil War in 1936, when anarchists destroyed Gaudí's original plans and plaster models. Future architects had to spend decades piecing together remnants of his vision to continue building. For over a century, workers relied solely on private donations and ticket sales to fund the continuous work.

Modern technology, including 3D computer modeling and stone cutting machinery, has dramatically accelerated the process in recent years. The main towers are finally scheduled for completion around 2026, marking the centenary of Gaudí's death. When finished, it will stand as the tallest church building in the entire world.
