Opening line

In Showa 18, enemy planes flew over the skies of Tokyo day after day.

In the midst of that Tokyo, there was a small zoo.

That zoo was home to three elephants named Goro, Yaeko, and Suzu.

One day, an order came from the military.

If a bomb were to fall on the zoo, destroying the cages and allowing the wild animals to escape into the city, it would be a disaster.

To prevent such a terrifying scenario, the order was given to euthanize animals such as lions, tigers, and bears.

Finally, the time came for the three elephants.

The first to be chosen was Goro, who was the most unruly of the three.
The zookeepers laced the potatoes—which Goro loved—with poison. However, the clever Goro sensed something was wrong with the tip of his trunk. He would bring the potato right up to his mouth, gaze at the zookeepers with a sad look, and then toss the poisoned potato far away with a couple of quick flings.
So, they tried using a thick syringe needle—the kind used on horses—but the elephant’s thick skin deflected every single needle, causing them to snap one after another.

With no other choice, they stopped giving him any food at all, and sadly, he died on the seventeenth day.

The only ones left were the gentle-hearted Yaé and Suzu.
Determined to save the two elephants at all costs, the zoo staff devised a plan to send them to the zoo in distant Sendai. However,

00:05In the heart of Tokyo, there was a small zoo.
00:08The zoo had three statues of animals named Goro, Yae, and Suzu.
00:13One day, an order came from the military.
00:15What if a bomb fell on the zoo and the cages were destroyed and the wild animals escaped?
00:19If you run away to the city, you'll be in big trouble.
00:22To prevent such a terrible situation
00:24Get rid of animals like lions, tigers, and bears.
00:27That was the order.
00:28It's finally the turn of the three statues.
00:32The first one chosen was Goro, the biggest troublemaker of them all.
00:36The zookeepers put poison in the potatoes that Goro loves.
00:39I prepared it.
00:40However, the clever Goro immediately sensed something was wrong with the tip of his nose.
00:44She brings it to her mouth and looks at the zookeeper with sad eyes.
00:48eye
00:48It can even throw a stomach full of poison far away with ease.
00:52is
00:52So I used a thick hypodermic needle meant for horses.
00:55The elephant's thick skin repelled every needle.
00:59It broke off.
01:00If you have no choice but to withhold any food from them...
01:03Sadly, it passed away on the 17th day.
01:06Next, the kind-hearted Yae and Suzu were left.
01:10Those who were determined to save the two animals
01:13We're planning to send it to a zoo far away in Sendai.
01:16But what if a bomb were to fall on Sendai?
01:19What if an elephant in Tokyo attacked someone in Sendai?
01:21Pressed by calls for who would take responsibility
01:24That hope was mercilessly shattered.
01:26We had no choice but to stop feeding Yae and Suzue.
01:29As the days passed, the two animals became incredibly thin and emaciated.
01:33That's what I said.
01:34Those once strong legs have become as thin as sticks.
01:36The ears are just big
01:38Her cute eyes were bulging out like rubber balls.
01:41When you hear the footsteps of the zookeepers who come around to check on the animals
01:44The two animals muster all their strength and shakily stand up.
01:47Please give me something to eat.
01:50It's as if it's saying, "I'm so hungry I can't move anymore."
01:53Crying in a hoarse voice
01:55With teary eyes, she clings to the zookeeper.
01:57The statue caretaker, who had cherished the statue as if it were his own child,
02:01Poor thing, poor thing
02:04Walking back and forth in front of the cage
02:06I just wandered around aimlessly.
02:07Then Yae and Suzu shakily rose to their feet.
02:10He stepped forward in front of the statue attendant.
02:12We leaned our exhausted bodies against each other's backs.
02:15He started performing tricks.
02:17It stood up on its hind legs.
02:19He bent his front legs.
02:20He raised his nose high and cheered.
02:23He mustered all the strength in his withered body to perform his feat.
02:27That was the case.
02:27I thought that if I performed tricks, I would get food like in the old days.
02:31Yae and Suzu are both trying their best, even though they are stumbling along the way.
02:34The zookeepers could no longer bear it.
02:36Ah Yae
02:38bell
02:38Please forgive me, please forgive me
02:40Then he jumped into the hut where there was food.
02:43I ran out from there and carried the water.
02:46I held onto the food and clung to the elephant's leg.
02:48Everyone at the zoo pretended not to see it.
02:53The headmistress also clenched her lips.
02:55I was just staring intently at the desk.
02:57You shouldn't feed the elephants.
02:59You must not give them water.
03:01We absolutely cannot let these two elephants live.
03:04But if we keep them alive for even one more day...
03:08I thought that the war would be over and we would be safe.
03:10Everyone was praying to God in their hearts.
03:13Despite their hopes, Yae and Suzu eventually became unable to move.
03:17While lying still on his side
03:19All I could do was stare at the clouds drifting across the sky above the zoo.
03:22At this point, even the elephant handlers are heartbroken and in pain.
03:27I don't have the energy to go see elephants.
03:28Other people were also feeling unwell and moved far away from the elephant enclosure.
03:32Two weeks later, Yae and Suzu finally ran out of strength.
03:36Both animals were leaning against the iron cage.
03:39Make your gaunt nose higher
03:41He passed away while still performing the Banzai stunt.
03:43The elephant handler was shouting, "The elephant is Yae, the bell is!"
03:48He burst into the office.
03:49I slammed my shoulder bone against the desk and broke down in tears.
03:52The zoo staff rushed towards the elephant enclosure.
03:55They all tumbled into the cage.
03:57I clung to the elephant's body.
03:59I shook the elephant's body.
04:01Everyone started crying out loud.
04:04Over their heads, enemy planes loaded with bombs
04:07They came attacking again, making a roaring noise.
04:10Everyone was still clinging to the elephant.
04:12I raised my fist and shouted.
04:14Stop the war
04:15Stop the war
04:16To the point of bursting my throat
04:18I cried and screamed over and over again.
04:21However, the sound of enemy planes roaring
04:23It mercilessly drowned out that voice.
04:28thank you very much
04:36Thank you for watching.
04:36Thank you for watching.
