00:18Hello and welcome along to Invicta Sport, the only show on your TV dedicated to wrapping
00:24up all of Kent's sporting action.
00:26I'm Finn McDermott and here's what you can expect on this Monday, the 26th of October.
00:32First of all, Gilliam's Ronan Hale responded to their 4-1 home defeat against Grimsby Town.
00:37After a surprising defeat, Grimsby Town striker Hale admits that they let their heads drop
00:43to lose 4-1 at home.
00:44It's not good.
00:45The defeat was a stark contrast to Gilliam's 4-1 away win at Rotherham United earlier this
00:51month, with Hale hoping the team can put it right next Saturday when the Gills travel to
00:55Shrewsbury Town, eager to see an improvement.
00:57Ultimately, the striker insists results matter more than the individual achievements, as the
01:02team looks to find greater steadiness.
01:06Kent-born darts champion Ross Smith has earned a European Championship for the second time.
01:12The 37-year-old Ross Smith returned to Germany to compete in the European Darts Championship,
01:17where he defended home favourite Martin Schindler 11-8, reclaiming the title he first won four
01:23years ago in 2022.
01:25Smith's win came as no surprise, given his incremental victories during the Championship,
01:29but his win was disappointing for many.
01:32In particular, 19-year-old Luke Littner, nicknamed the Nuke, who'd been hoping to claim the only
01:37missing title in his collection, but lost in the semi-finals.
01:41Gravesend suffered an unfortunate 12-17 loss to Sutton and Epsom, whilst battling the climate
01:47in an attempt to keep their 100% record, with the Gs having a growing...
01:51Apologies, this is the wrong pitch, as that is, in fact, the European Darts champion.
01:57And there we go, there are Gravesend.
01:59Now, Sutton were the first to score a converted try.
02:03In the first half of that match, there was some impressive tackling from player of the match,
02:08Brad Money, as well as Les Falafatu and Gary Brett.
02:11Due to injuries with props, the home side were forced to go uncontested in the scrum.
02:17They looked, however, at the try...
02:19The referee changed his mind, I should say, after the Sutton defence got under the ball.
02:24Rhys Betts converted to give the home side a try, but that was, unfortunately, as good
02:29as it got for Gravesend.
02:31Midstone United's match at Torquay was held up after referee Dan England learned of coaching
02:36from a reoccurring fan.
02:39Midstone manager Fagin had described the situation as a new one for him, surprised it had even
02:44occurred, with the referee asking if he was one of his coaches.
02:48Why would I have one of my coaches in the home end?
02:51It makes no sense.
02:52Whilst no discriminatory remarks were made on this occasion, there have been multiple times
02:57in the past when no action has been taken.
02:59Fagin asked for assistance, but the fan carried on after the fact.
03:04But that's football, is what Fagin said.
03:10Now, few people play sports competitively in their 70s, and even fewer are doing so on
03:17the world stage.
03:18But Jim Garrett has bucked that trend.
03:20He's from Fabersham Badminton Club and has won gold medals at the European Masters Championships
03:26in Cagliari, Sardinia, in both doubles and singles events.
03:31Jim joins us now.
03:32Well, thank you so much for joining us, Jim.
03:35I mean, we can see some pictures of you here training.
03:38We'll get back to those in a second.
03:39But this isn't, in fact, the first time you've played overseas.
03:41No, no, I've been playing for many, many years now.
03:46Travelled all over the world.
03:48Canada, India, South Korea, Poland, Bulgaria, all over the place.
03:56So I've been very lucky to do that.
03:58Well, I mean, luck is one thing, but we can see these pictures of you here.
04:01It also speaks to your longevity as a player.
04:03How many years have you been playing now?
04:05I don't like to think, really, how long.
04:08I'm at 82 next, so I've been playing probably county level and national level
04:14from about 60 onwards.
04:17So, yeah, a long time.
04:18Well, I suppose many people out there might be wondering, what's your secret?
04:22I don't think it's a secret.
04:24I think it's just wanting to keep going.
04:27Always had a love for the sport.
04:30So I've started when I was young, and now it's a case of just keep going,
04:37enjoy life as it's, and just play badminton as much as you can.
04:41Right, I see.
04:42And when you were first getting back into the sport,
04:45did you say you were in your 60s?
04:47That's when I started playing county.
04:49Oh, I see.
04:50So tell me a bit about when you first picked up a badminton racket.
04:53Did you know that it would carry on until your 80s?
04:56Not at all.
04:56I think I did it, I was an apprentice engineer at 19,
05:02and my best man, he actually booked me in
05:07because we couldn't get into football training
05:10because it was the wrong night.
05:11So he said, oh, I said, what have you done?
05:14He said, oh, I've booked us in at badminton.
05:16And I said, badminton?
05:18What's that?
05:19What do we do with that?
05:20And he said, oh, I don't know.
05:21We've just run around, so we should keep fit that way.
05:23So that was how I started, and it just went from there, really.
05:27And kept going.
05:28And kept going through all sorts of different things,
05:32obviously in the north of England then,
05:34and then moving to Kent in the 80s, 60s, 80s, and just carried on.
05:43And in fact, badminton has worked for us
05:47because it enables you to meet people from the local area then
05:51because you've got a common language, haven't you?
05:53You know, they play badminton, you play badminton.
05:56It's the same all over the world.
05:58And that's how it continued.
05:59And once I got into Kent, I started playing regularly county
06:04and then moved into the Vets and the Masters.
06:08And then the rest of it was just luck, good training,
06:13good mind and everything else.
06:15And then eventually started to win titles.
06:18And I came on the programme three years ago,
06:20having won in South Korea.
06:23And luckily this year I've done the same in Carigari.
06:27Yeah, yeah, you've won in Italy as well.
06:29It was two golds and a bronze, I believe, is that right?
06:32That's right, yeah.
06:32Amazing.
06:33Tell us a bit about what that experience was like.
06:35Oh, lovely.
06:37I mean, going to the countries,
06:39obviously you go there to play the tournament,
06:42but you also want to enjoy and see places.
06:45And so it was nice to enjoy Sardinia,
06:49a lovely place to go to.
06:50And then so you finish the tournament
06:53and then you can have a little bit of a holiday,
06:55look around and sort of enjoy yourself.
06:57So that's really one of the beauties of it
06:59because we're retired.
07:01So we've got the time on our hands and so we can do it.
07:04So you play regularly at your club,
07:07like I play at Faversham,
07:09which is a local club with a junior section
07:12and plenty of players from all sorts of age groups.
07:16And, you know, it's just almost like a family.
07:19And anybody who wants to get involved can join local clubs.
07:24And Faversham's no exceptions, apparently a club,
07:28one of those timed places you should go and have a look at them.
07:32You know, so I'm fortunate that they're there for me,
07:38you know, as much as I'm there for them.
07:41Yeah.
07:42Absolutely.
07:43And in some of those medals you got,
07:45I believe the two golds were in singles events
07:47and then the bronze was in doubles?
07:49One was in men's doubles and one was in men's singles
07:53and the bronze was in mixed doubles.
07:57That was the one that, in a sense,
07:59I had to play in the age group down below
08:02because they don't actually at the present time
08:05have an 80s in mixed.
08:09But this year has been a groundbreaking one
08:13because most of the,
08:14because there are more of us moving into the 80s,
08:18most of the local tournaments in the different counties
08:22have now started to run 80s as well.
08:25So we now, in fact, this weekend,
08:29we now boast a world champion who's from Essex
08:33and a European champion from Kent.
08:36So it's quite a nice thing.
08:37In fact, we had a photograph taken together this weekend,
08:40which was really quite pleasant, you know,
08:42to just, you know, sort of have two things like that.
08:45He was 84 and I'm 82, so it was quite nice, yeah.
08:49Must have been nice to sort of share in the success there.
08:51Absolutely.
08:52You know, in fact, I was fortunate
08:54because I actually sat as his coach when he won the title
08:59and I think I was as chuffed as he was.
09:02You know, it was wonderful, yeah.
09:04But as I say, at my club,
09:07you encourage people, you know,
09:09there's no reason why not, you know.
09:12I spoke to a chap this weekend
09:14who had only started two years ago
09:16and he was already into the vets in,
09:19I think he was 77.
09:21So I thought, well, that's great, you know.
09:23Yeah.
09:24So you'd encourage anybody to do the same things.
09:27Any sport is good for you,
09:30your exercise,
09:31you're meeting people,
09:32it's a good social life
09:34and then you can build on it.
09:37You know, everybody starts at one level,
09:40then the next week, the better.
09:42The week after that, the better still.
09:44So that's what, you know,
09:46that's what we try and encourage
09:47and I used to do it
09:48when I was coaching as a, you know,
09:50sort of a 40-year-old,
09:52trying to encourage people to take up the sport.
09:56So, yeah.
09:57I see.
09:57I mean, and you mentioned the next week this,
09:59the next week that,
10:00the next week Italy
10:02and then before that was South Korea,
10:04I believe you've been to Thailand, Bulgaria.
10:06What's next?
10:08Australia.
10:09Oh, brilliant.
10:10Just going further,
10:11just a longer flight every time.
10:12Absolutely.
10:13That's obviously,
10:14we'll go for an extended stay.
10:18Probably we'll have to go there before,
10:20well before the tournament,
10:21you know, to acclimatise.
10:23But, yeah, I'm looking forward to that
10:25because I think when I retired,
10:29I'd always wanted to go to Australia
10:31and set a target to go to Ayers Rock
10:35on my 60th birthday.
10:36So, this would be something really special
10:39to go back again.
10:41Maybe, oh, it was funny
10:43because Ayers Rock,
10:44you couldn't go on it
10:46because it's a shrine for the Aborigines.
10:48So, actually, I walked around it.
10:50I wish I'd known before how far it was.
10:53It was 10 kilometres around the base.
10:55Wow.
10:55So, yeah.
10:56A warm-up.
10:56Yeah, that was quite a walk in the sun, yeah.
10:59Brilliant.
10:59And I suppose, have you got any advice
11:01for anyone watching?
11:02It doesn't have to be in badminton.
11:03It can just be in sport in general
11:05about how to, not just keep going,
11:08but keep your enjoyment as well.
11:10Well, I think the more you do it
11:12and the more you get involved
11:14in what's going on,
11:16the more you see the benefits of it.
11:19You know, everybody talks about wellness
11:22and mind, you know, being healthy and so on.
11:25But I was always told healthy mind, healthy body.
11:28And I think that's it.
11:31Stay healthy, do things.
11:33And I think it was a philosophy
11:35that was always in my family anyway,
11:37and that was just do it, whatever it is.
11:40Just do it.
11:40Just do it.
11:41Don't think about it.
11:42Just do it.
11:43Amazing.
11:44Well, that is all the time we have, I'm afraid.
11:45Thank you so much.
11:46I really do appreciate your time.
11:48And all the best of luck in Australia.
11:51Cool.
11:51Thank you so much for watching,
11:52and we'll see you in just a few minutes
11:54with the next part of the show.
11:55See you in a second.
12:22We'll see you in a second.
12:36We'll see you in a second.
13:06We'll see you in a second.
13:36We'll see you in a second.
14:06We'll see you in a second.
14:37We'll see you in a second.
15:16We'll see you in a second.
15:18We'll see you in a second.
15:26website camtv.co.uk and clicking on our sport tab. There you'll see all sorts of videos just like
15:32this one. Goalkeepers have been an official part of football since 1871 and no starting 11 is
15:39complete without one in the modern game as well. But new changes to the football association's
15:44guidelines means that keepers won't be introduced until under eight's football. This comes as part
15:50of the FA's future fit guidelines to make youth football more efficient training by giving players
15:55more touches on the ball and here in Kent one goalkeeping coach who holds sessions across
16:00the county believes it could add to the development of young people who only want to stop shots
16:05but that it has its downsides as well. I think the new 3v3 system will actually benefit those
16:12goalkeepers who are you know not necessarily using their feet a lot at that age to encourage
16:19them you know to you know improve their footwork. However on the other side of things from having
16:27coached dozens of you know goalkeepers at five to six you know who we have in our academies
16:34and schools at the moment it's tough to tell them that you know they're essentially not going to be
16:38able to play in goal next season. Goalkeepers wear the number one shirt for a reason they're one out
16:44of eleven it's the most specialised position in football and whether you're a traditional shot
16:49stopper or more of a modern keeper there's plenty to learn. So for under sevens who aren't able to
16:55play goalkeeper anymore as of the 2026 to 27 season how much is it taking away not only from their
17:01training but from their enjoyment of the game? Kids under seven won't be able to play as goalkeepers
17:07in training how would you feel if you wouldn't be able to play goalkeeper? Very sad. I'd feel
17:13frustrated because that's my role football and if I had to change that'd just be bad. I don't think
17:22it'd be great really I'm not great when it comes to my footwork so I think I'd struggle quite a
17:27bit
17:27I love playing in goal so it's sort of I've been raised as a goalkeeper and nothing else really.
17:33It's not the only difference from playing adult football with under sevens playing three-a-side
17:38games without substitutes or league tables putting the focus entirely on player improvement. The
17:44changes mean that younger goalkeepers might have the incentive to change position early on. Ultimately
17:49it's down to how the young players take the change and if it makes them better with the ball at
17:53their
17:53feet then the future of goalkeeping might be in a safer pair of hands. Finn McDermid for GameTV in Moncton.
18:02October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the charity Breast Cancer Now has been encouraging
18:08people to join their challenge walk of 100 miles this month and one woman from Medway has taken on
18:14that challenge raising almost 10 times her target already but this isn't just any challenge for
18:20Daniella Vistossi it's a personal one too. Her sister Sara was diagnosed with triple negative breast
18:25cancer in 2024 and received a metastatic diagnosis last year. She's now on ongoing weekly chemotherapy
18:32and they both joined me in the studio to tell us a bit more about the challenge. I mean first
18:37of all
18:3810 times the amount I mean some congratulations has been in order. How does that feel from your
18:42guys's perspective? It's amazing especially as the majority of the people that have donated are
18:47complete strangers so you know for people to pull together like that it's a subject obviously I
18:53think that touches many people and we were a charity event for breast cancer now at the weekend and I
18:59think that's a lot of the donations came in from that it's at Medway Rugby Club so yeah just blown
19:05blown away really that I've received the amount of donations I have so far. And Sara how has this journey
19:11been from from your perspective to watch Daniella do this how does it feel for you personally? Oh I'm
19:15really proud. It's difficult to get out and do those miles but Daniella always says that obviously
19:22what I'm going through is a bit more difficult and just to just to get out it was grim the
19:26other day
19:26when we went out but breast cancer's grim too so you know not quite as grim as the weather the
19:32weather
19:32was bad but yeah so we're just getting out and doing it and I'm really proud and yeah so we
19:39had our walk
19:39Friday that was yeah there was about 20 of us on Friday it was wear it pink day so um
19:44we sort of put
19:45an event together on Facebook and invited as many people to come as possible and there were a couple
19:49of ladies there from the 100 miles challenge as well that live locally um so yeah but there was
19:55branches falling down in the park yeah yeah it was hectic but good fun amazing uh was that the first
20:01kind
20:01of event like that uh that you guys have been doing or tell us a bit about the the whole
20:04process
20:05so I've been trying to get out um on a daily basis um even when it's raining and and miserable
20:11like Sarah said Sarah gets up every day and you know so if I can't go out in the rain
20:16then yeah
20:17that's that was my part of my challenge I did it last year in May and obviously May's a lot
20:22nicer
20:22weather um so I thought I'd push myself a bit I've got a very sedentary job so I sit at
20:27a desk all day
20:28so it's quite nice to get out um so I'm aiming to do about three and a half miles a
20:32day sometimes
20:33it's been longer sometimes um slightly less and there's been days where I've not managed to get
20:37out but um yeah I'm I've got 16 miles to go before Saturday so amazing yeah I'll do it absolutely
20:45I
20:46mean what what a journey and uh Sarah from from your perspective when you had this diagnosis what did it
20:50mean to you that Daniela was by my side yeah yeah so um I've had lots of people by my
20:56side since
20:57diagnosis in June 24 and as you say I got a new diagnosis in October last year of metastatic breast
21:04cancer and to have my sister I've got a twin sister too and then my family all my friends I've
21:11got a
21:11support group I go to once a month called booby brunch and it's all women that are affected living
21:16with have had um breast cancer and so yeah just to have my sister by my side is great and
21:21um her getting
21:22out um I've joined her for for a little bit but uh not too much definitely not 100 miles but
21:27yeah
21:27all good and there's so much going on to raise awareness of breast cancer during October and
21:32breast cancer now are one of the the leading UK charities for breast cancer and they provide so
21:37much support for people like myself that are living with breast cancer so all the donations are going
21:42to an you know an amazing an amazing charity um and we've done quite a bit this this month for
21:47it so
21:48yeah brilliant and I suppose this was also about the awareness the wider awareness of breast cancer
21:55because we can see behind us uh some of some of uh is it the walk in pink yeah yeah
22:00wear it pink
22:02sorry many people are sort of saying breast cancer awareness isn't just for October it's all year round
22:11and um we encourage you to on the first to check your chest so be you a man or a
22:17woman or whatever
22:18you know we're going to check our chest on the first and it's about recognizing and understanding
22:22what is normal and any change and just getting that seen to you straight away because early detection
22:27um it gives a gives a better outcome for you so yeah I see and uh Danielle back to you
22:33for a moment
22:33um walking 100 miles is that something you do particularly often no no no I I like I said I
22:42sit
22:43at a desk all day for my I work from home sit at my desk all day um so it
22:48has definitely been a challenge
22:49but it's something that I've decided I will keep on after October because it's good for not only your
22:56physical health obviously but it's for my mental health as well it's been really good this month
23:01um so that's something that I will I will keep up I'm not sure the dog's too happy she's 13
23:07and
23:07she's uh yeah she's she's like not again she's probably happy the first few times they went hold
23:12on every day when she goes to another lap of the park the dog's like really again but yeah so
23:18it's
23:19something that I will carry on just just yeah it's it's good for my head head space and I suppose
23:24how
23:24are you gonna you say it's Saturday is oh of course Halloween the last day the end of the month
23:29so it's
23:30100 miles in October and I'm actually away at the weekend so I'm going to try and get it done
23:34by Friday um but if not I'm going to the seaside for the weekend so I'll do my remaining miles
23:40along
23:40the beachfront but um yes I'm hoping to get it completed by Friday and I'm like I say I'm blown
23:46away
23:46my original target was 150 pounds and I'm over a thousand now so um yeah it's I just want to
23:52say
23:52thank you to everybody really that's donated must be amazing to see that where can people uh
23:57um it's on just giving so if you put in my name and just give in it will it will
24:01bring up in the
24:02search engine my page so amazing well thank you both so much for your time I really do appreciate
24:06you coming on thanks thanks well it was amazing to talk to them uh all about their walking don't forget
