00:00When I stood for election I stood to improve people's lives. That's what
00:07motivated me to become, run for election to become a councillor and when I look
00:13through all the documents about the proposed special rate variation I keep
00:19in mind the people that I made promises to when I ran for election and I think
00:26of them. Will this massive rate rise help them? I stand for all the people in Mossvale
00:34whose property values are currently going down due to the massive plastic
00:39factory proposal and I ask... We have a point of order Councillor Kent. I'd like to
00:46ask what relevance talking about the the place refined situation has to the
00:54autumn before us. Thanks. Okay thank you so please I'll uphold that point of order
00:58please keep to the contents of the motion. Thank you. I stood for people like Elizabeth
01:05in Balmoral Village who lost everything in the black summer fires and is clawing
01:12her way back financially and I ask myself will this special rate variation help
01:18people like Elizabeth and all the rest who were impacted by that devastating bushfire.
01:25I stood for people like Linda who I met on the election campaign trail when I was
01:33handing out brochures in Midagong who told me she was a pensioner and she had her
01:40rates notice on the fridge so that she could be reminded each and every day to pay a
01:46little bit more off her rates when she could. And I asked myself will this massive
01:51rate rise help people like Linda? I stood for small businesses like Deeb's Cafe in
02:00Midagong who just the other day served me a coffee with a smile on his face, sweat on
02:07his forehead because he'd just come from the kitchen and he was on the phone to
02:16his face. And I asked myself with rising interest rates, rising energy bills, rising
02:26wages and a lowering demand will this special rate variation help that business
02:34and all the other small businesses across this shire? I stood for people who get up at
02:40the crack of dawn and travel into the factories at Braemar and Berrimar and I ask will this
02:47massive rate rise help them? What I don't stand for Madam Mayor is for these people's money
02:56to be wasted. Wasted. And for us to turn around and ask them for more.
03:02We've had two point of orders called Councillor Kent. Comments like I don't stand for these
03:10people's money being wasted, inferring that payment of rates and paying rates your money
03:17is being wasted. I submit that's bringing counselling to disrepute. It's an act of disorder
03:24and I seek a ruling please. Madam Mayor I won't be apologising for advocating for no waste of money.
03:34That's okay, you stated you won't be apologising, will you be retracting or withdrawing? Certainly not.
