00:07U.S. President Donald Trump claimed the results were rigged and corrupt,
00:11without providing any evidence.

00:18he had publicly supported him,
00:19as he pledged to join a wave of conservative Latin American leaders cosying up to Washington.

00:28And I didn't take sides, but it looked like another rigged election, frankly.
00:33I didn't take sides, but it was a terrible look for the world.
00:38It's another election. You know, elections have to be indisputable.
00:44And it looked very bad to me.
00:46I didn't take sides, I didn't endorse anybody or anything,

00:53Bolsonaro initially refused to recognize Lula's victory,
00:57saying it was impossible to acknowledge the result
00:59and that the election should have been annulled.
01:02He has since said he would organize the opposition.
01:05Lula's victory bucks a regional trend towards the right
01:09seen in Chile, Colombia and Peru, among others,
01:12limiting Trump's drive to tighten his grip on the Western Hemisphere.
01:16In his campaign, Lula promised Brazil would maintain control over its resources
01:20and preserve its freedom to sell beyond the U.S.,
01:23while also protecting efforts to stop illegal cutting of the Amazon rainforest.
