Hydrogen peroxide on your feet can do more than fizz — it can help clean, soften rough heels, freshen tired feet, and support a simple old-fashioned foot care routine. Elias explains six plain uses of ordinary 3% hydrogen peroxide passed down in Amish households, from a warm foot soak for odor and hard skin to cleaning clippers, files, pumice stones, work boots, and insoles.
The video also shows how to brighten stained toenails, why a file and thick cream matter after soaking, and when peroxide should never be used, especially on open cracks, wounds, diabetes-related foot problems, or poor circulation. It is a practical, grounded guide to Amish home remedies, foot soak care, and low-cost household cleaning with one brown bottle.
Created for viewers searching for hydrogen peroxide foot soak, Amish home remedies, foot odor relief, rough heel care, toenail stain cleaning, and simple natural foot care tips. 00:00Fill a basin with warm water tonight.
00:02Pour in the little brown bottle, put your feet in, and watch.
00:07In about 30 seconds, the water around your toes begins to fizz,
00:12little white bubbles climbing your heels,
00:14gathering in the cracks and along the edges of your nails and under the hard skin.
00:20That fizz is the whole of what I want to show you today,
00:24because here is what it is, and it is not magic, and it is not salt.
00:30Hydrogen peroxide is water with one extra bit of oxygen stuck on,
00:35and that oxygen is desperate to leave.
00:38Where it touches something that ought not to be there,
00:41the grime, the old dead skin sitting on your heel for a month,
00:46it lets go, and the bubble you see is that oxygen leaving.
00:50Where your foot is clean, nothing happens.
00:53Where it is not, it fizzes.
00:55So the water is showing you, honestly, where the trouble is.
01:00Your feet are telling on themselves.
01:02So today I am going to show you the honest, plain ways to care for your feet
01:07with that one cheap bottle, and, just as important,
01:12the firm warnings about when it is not enough and you must see a doctor instead.
01:17Let me show you.
01:19Here is the thing to understand first, for it is the whole spine of this.
01:24You do not need a different deer product for every trouble with your feet.
01:29Folk are sold a soak for this, and a cream for that, and a spray for the other,
01:34a whole shelf of them.
01:36When the plain truth is that a foot kept clean, dry, filed, and creamed,
01:42in a shoe kept clean and dry, simply does not hold the things
01:46that make it hard and rough and smelling.
01:49That is the one law of it, and the one cheap bottle of peroxide
01:54pointed at whichever part needs it, does the cleaning.
01:58But hear me plainly at the very start, for this matters most.
02:02What I am giving you today is the plain, everyday care
02:06of ordinary, tired, rough feet, and it is not doctoring.
02:10Where a foot has a real trouble, an infection, a wound, a disease,
02:15that is a doctor's matter and not a basin's,
02:18and I will tell you honestly, as we go, exactly where that line is.
02:23Now let me give you the ways.
02:25Quick word before we go further.
02:27The old household ways handed down to me,
02:30the kind I am sharing today, and a great many more besides,
02:34are far more than I could ever fit into one video.
02:38I have gathered the whole of them into a book,
02:40and you will find it at EliasYoder.com.
02:44If today's tips serve you, that is where the rest
02:47of what my mother and grandmother taught me lives,
02:50all in the one place.
02:52Now, to the feet.
02:54But first, the most important warning of all,
02:57and I put it here at the front and not buried at the end,
03:00because I would not forgive myself otherwise.
03:03If you have diabetes, or if your feet have gone numb,
03:07or your circulation is poor and your feet are always cold,
03:11do not soak your feet at all, not in peroxide, not in anything,
03:16without your doctor telling you yes first.
03:18Why so firm?
03:20Because such a foot cannot always feel that the water is too hot,
03:24or that a small crack has opened.
03:26And on that kind of foot, a small thing can become a very big thing very fast.
03:31I am not a doctor.
03:33I am a mother with a basin,
03:34and a mother knows when to send you to the doctor.
03:37So if that is you, this video is not your basin.
03:41Your doctor is.
03:42Hold that above everything else that follows.
03:45Now, my mother had one basin,
03:48one brown bottle,
03:49one file,
03:50and a jar of cream.
03:51And with those four things,
03:53she kept the feet of a big family
03:55and a husband who worked all day in boots.
03:58And she had a saying,
04:00that you cannot hide a trouble in the dark
04:02and expect it to heal,
04:04for the dark is where it grows.
04:06She meant that feet go rough and sore
04:08not because a body is dirty or lazy,
04:11but because we hide them all day in shoes and socks,
04:15in the warm and the dark and the damp,
04:17which is exactly where the roughness and the odor breed.
04:20So here is her kind of care,
04:23the plain uses,
04:24with the honest warnings kept right beside each one.
04:28The first and main use is the soak itself,
04:31to clean the skin and soften the hard callus.
04:34Warm water in a basin,
04:36not hot,
04:37warm as a bath for a baby.
04:39Three parts water to one part peroxide,
04:42the plain brown bottle 3% kind,
04:45that costs about a dollar.
04:47Sit down,
04:48put your feet in,
04:49and let them soak 10 to 15 minutes,
04:52sitting,
04:52not standing,
04:54letting the fizz do its two jobs,
04:56cleaning the skin,
04:57and softening that hard dead callus on the heel,
05:00and under the big toe,
05:02loosening it the way water softens a dried thing.
05:06And mind that measure,
05:07three to one,
05:08do not make it stronger,
05:10thinking it works better,
05:12for too strong and too often,
05:14dries the skin out.
05:15And dry skin is how the cracking starts,
05:19which is worse than the roughness you began with.
05:22Gentle and repeated beats strong and harsh.
05:26The second use follows right from it,
05:28the filing of the softened hard skin.
05:31And this is where the roughness actually comes off.
05:35Take your feet out and dry them well.
05:37Then take a foot file,
05:39the long one with the rough side
05:41that they sell cheap at the dollar store.
05:43And file the hard skin gently,
05:46in one direction,
05:47and it comes off in a soft white powder.
05:50But hear the care in it.
05:53Do not dig,
05:54do not gouge,
05:55and do not try to take it all off in one night.
05:59What took a month to build up
06:01comes off gently over three or four soaks,
06:04a little each time.
06:06File gently,
06:07a little at a time,
06:09patience,
06:09not force.
06:11And you file only the hard,
06:13calloused skin,
06:14never raw or tender or broken skin.
06:17And the third,
06:19which my mother said,
06:20was the part nobody must ever skip,
06:22always the cream.
06:24Never soak your feet
06:26and then walk away with them dry.
06:28For here is the thing about the peroxide,
06:30and it is an honest fact you must know.
06:33The peroxide takes some of the moisture
06:36out of the skin as it works.
06:38So a foot soaked and left dry
06:40is a foot set up to crack.
06:43So the moment your feet are soaked
06:45and filed and dried,
06:47you rub in a good thick cream
06:49to put the moisture back.
06:51And that is what leaves them soft
06:53instead of cracked.
06:55And here is my mother's fine old trick.
06:58After the cream,
06:59put on a pair of old cotton socks
07:02and sleep in them.
07:03So the cream stays on your feet
07:05all night,
07:06soaking in,
07:07instead of wiping off on the sheets.
07:10Cream and socks and bed.
07:12Three nights of that
07:14and you will feel the difference
07:15under your own hand.
07:17Always the cream.
07:19It is not the extra step.
07:21It is the step that saves the rest.
07:24Now, the fourth,
07:25the cracked, hard, dry heels.
07:27And here I must give the warnings
07:30as much room as the care.
07:32So listen close.
07:34For an ordinary, hard, dry, thickened heel
07:37that has not split open,
07:39the soak softens that hard rim.
07:42The file very gently takes down the hard edge.
07:46And the cream, thick,
07:48with the socks overnight,
07:50softens it back to good.
07:51But here is the load-bearing warning
07:54and I will not soften it.
07:56If that heel has actually split,
07:59if the crack is open, raw,
08:01or bleeding at all,
08:03you do not put peroxide on it.
08:05Not ever.
08:07A bleeding heel crack is a cut,
08:09an open wound.
08:11And peroxide on an open wound
08:13damages the new skin
08:15trying to close it.
08:17The modern doctors moved away
08:19from peroxide on wounds
08:20for that very reason.
08:22So for an open, raw,
08:24or bleeding crack,
08:26warm water
08:27and a little plain, mild soap only.
08:30Dry it gently,
08:31cream it,
08:32sock it,
08:33and leave the peroxide out entirely
08:35until the crack has fully closed.
08:38And if a heel crack is deep
08:40or will not close
08:42or looks angry,
08:43that is a doctor,
08:45not a basin.
08:46Care for the hard heel, yes,
08:48but an open crack is a wound
08:51and a wound is not peroxides.
08:54And the fifth,
08:55a small, pleasant one
08:57that is purely cosmetic,
08:59the whitening of nails
09:00that have gone yellow-stained.
09:02And mark that word,
09:04stained.
09:04I mean a nail stained yellow
09:07from months of dark polish,
09:09not a thick, crumbling,
09:11or diseased nail,
09:12which is another matter entirely
09:14I will speak to in a moment.
09:16For a merely polished, stained nail,
09:19make a little paste,
09:20a spoon of baking soda
09:22with enough peroxide stirred in
09:24to make a thin toothpaste.
09:26Spread it on the nails,
09:28leave five minutes,
09:29rub gently with an old toothbrush,
09:32then rinse.
09:33And the soda scrubs,
09:34while the peroxide lifts the stain,
09:36the same as it lifts a coffee stain
09:38from a kitchen towel,
09:39and the nail comes up
09:40a shade or two clearer.
09:42Once a week until it is
09:43where you like it,
09:44and then let your nails go bare
09:46and breathe a few days
09:47between polishes.
09:48That is for a stained nail only.
09:50Now, I must be honest
09:52and plain about the nails,
09:53for this is where folk
09:54most want a cure
09:55I cannot in good conscience
09:57give them.
09:58If your toenail has gone thick,
10:00yellow, crumbling,
10:01lifting, or spreading,
10:03that is very likely
10:04a real infection,
10:05a fungus,
10:06and I will not tell you
10:07a basin of peroxide
10:08will cure it,
10:09for that would be
10:10a false promise,
10:10and your foot deserves
10:11better than a false promise.
10:13A soak may freshen
10:15and clean around it,
10:16but curing a nail infection
10:17is a doctor's
10:18or a proper pharmacist's matter,
10:20with proper treatment.
10:21And if that nail is painful,
10:23lifting off,
10:24or spreading to the others,
10:25you go to the doctor.
10:27The same for that soft,
10:28white, peeling,
10:29itching skin between the toes,
10:31or a persistent bad odor
10:33and rash
10:33that will not clear.
10:35Those can be
10:35a real infection too,
10:37and a real infection
10:38wants real treatment,
10:39not a home soak
10:40sold as a cure.
10:41I will always tell you honestly
10:43when the brown bottle
10:44is enough
10:44and when it is not,
10:46and for a true infection
10:47of the foot or nail,
10:48it is not.
10:49That is a doctor.
10:51Keep the feet clean
10:52and dry to help, yes,
10:53but do not mistake
10:54helping for curing,
10:55and do not put off
10:56the doctor for a basin.
10:58Now the sixth,
10:59and this is the one
11:00that is not about
11:01your feet at all,
11:02and it is the reason
11:03the trouble so often
11:04comes back
11:04no matter how you soak.
11:06It is your shoes.
11:07You clean your feet
11:08and put them back
11:09clean into the same
11:11warm, dark, damp shoe
11:12every morning
11:13and never clean the shoe.
11:15And a shoe worn all day
11:16is a damp, dark sponge
11:18where odor takes hold.
11:19So you must clean the house
11:21the foot lives in,
11:22not just the foot.
11:23Take peroxide straight
11:24from the brown bottle,
11:26no water in a spray bottle.
11:27Pull the insoles out
11:29if they come out,
11:30spray them both sides
11:31until damp,
11:32and spray inside the shoe.
11:33Then set them in the sun
11:34outdoors for the afternoon.
11:36The peroxide freshens
11:37and disinfects
11:38and the sun finishes it.
11:40Keep two pairs
11:41so one is always drying
11:43while you wear the other.
11:44And the same spray
11:45on your file and clippers,
11:46for if you file one foot
11:48and then the other
11:49with the same file,
11:50you have only carried
11:51the trouble across.
11:52Clean the shoe
11:53and the tools,
11:54not just the foot.
11:56That is the piece
11:56everyone misses,
11:57and it is why
11:58it kept coming back.
11:59Now the plain safety
12:01gathered up
12:01and heed every line.
12:03Use only the 3% peroxide,
12:05the plain brown bottle,
12:07never the strong kind
12:08from the beauty supply
12:09which burns.
12:10Never mix peroxide
12:11with vinegar
12:11in the same basin,
12:13whatever you may have read,
12:14for the two together
12:15make a harsh acid
12:16that burns the skin.
12:18Keep them apart.
12:19Never put peroxide
12:20on an open, raw,
12:22or bleeding crack
12:22or wound.
12:23Never do this every day.
12:25Once or twice a week
12:26is plenty
12:27for more dries the skin.
12:29Always follow with the cream
12:30for the peroxide
12:32takes moisture with it.
12:33And above all,
12:34the warning I began with,
12:36if you have diabetes,
12:38poor circulation
12:38or numb feet,
12:39do not soak at all
12:41without your doctor's yes.
12:42Keep those
12:43and this is safe,
12:45honest, gentle care.
12:46Now think a moment
12:47about who profits
12:48from your not knowing
12:49the answer was
12:50in the cabinet all along.
12:51The salon pedicure
12:53is dear
12:53and lasts 3 weeks.
12:55The foot peel pouch,
12:56read the pack,
12:57is mostly the same idea
12:59as a basin,
13:00an acid that loosens
13:01the dead skin
13:02and you throw it away.
13:03The shoe spray
13:04is often only perfume
13:05laid over the trouble,
13:07a rock set over
13:08a hole in the floor.
13:09It is worse than a plot,
13:11for no one had to arrange it.
13:12There is no money
13:14in a dollar bottle
13:15and a dollar file
13:16that last a family
13:17half a year,
13:18and a great deal
13:19in a person
13:20a little ashamed
13:21of their feet
13:22who buys the pouch
13:23and the spray
13:24and the appointment
13:26and is never told
13:27the plain cheap care
13:29was in the cupboard
13:30all along.
13:31So the plain old knowing
13:33just stopped
13:34being handed down
13:35because no one profits
13:37by your keeping
13:38your own feet.
13:40My mother kept
13:41a whole family's feet
13:43on those four cheap things,
13:44and somewhere
13:46between her day
13:47and ours,
13:47we were taught
13:49to be ashamed
13:49and to buy.
13:51The mending of it
13:53is a basin,
13:54a brown bottle,
13:55a file,
13:56and a jar of cream.
13:58You soak
13:59your ordinary,
14:00tired, rough feet warm,
14:02three parts water
14:03to one of peroxide,
14:0510 to 15 minutes.
14:07You file
14:08the softened hard skin
14:10gently,
14:10a little at a time,
14:12never the raw
14:13or the broken.
14:14You always follow
14:16with the cream
14:16and the socks
14:17in bed.
14:18You whiten
14:20a merely stained nail
14:21with the soda
14:22and peroxide paste,
14:23and you clean
14:24the shoes
14:25and the tools
14:26in the peroxide spray
14:27and the sun
14:28so the trouble
14:30has nowhere to hide
14:31and return from.
14:32And you keep
14:33the firm lines,
14:35never on an open crack,
14:37never mixed with vinegar,
14:39never every day,
14:403% only,
14:42and never at all
14:43on a diabetic
14:44or numb
14:45or poorly circulated foot
14:47without your doctor.
14:49And you know
14:50the honest limit,
14:51a true infection,
14:53a fungal nail,
14:54a bleeding crack,
14:55a foot that worries you
14:57is a doctor's,
14:58not a basin's.
15:00That is how it comes home,
15:02one basin,
15:03one cared-for foot
15:05at a time,
15:06the keeping
15:07of your own body
15:08back in your own hands.
15:10So here is what
15:12I would ask of you.
15:13Do not try to do
15:15all of this at once.
15:16Do just the one thing
15:18tonight.
15:19One basin,
15:21three parts warm water
15:22and one of peroxide,
15:2415 minutes.
15:26Sit and watch
15:27what happens
15:28around your toes.
15:29Then dry them,
15:31file the hard heel a little,
15:33cream them,
15:34socks, bed.
15:36That is the whole
15:37first night.
15:38And then come back
15:40and tell me
15:40in the comments
15:41how much yours fizzed.
15:43Honestly,
15:44for every one of you
15:46will get a different answer,
15:47and that answer
15:48is telling you something.
15:50And tell me, too,
15:52your county,
15:52the way you all do,
15:54for it is the boots
15:55and long hours folk,
15:57the nurses
15:58and the cooks
15:59and the ones
16:00on their feet all day
16:01who need this most.
16:02And I like to know
16:04where you are all standing.
16:05I read every one.
16:08Next time,
16:09I will show you
16:10the many household uses
16:11of that same
16:13cheap brown bottle
16:14and its plain cousins,
16:16the soda
16:17and the salt
16:17and the vinegar,
16:18and how one cheap shelf
16:20of them
16:21does the work
16:22of a whole store.
16:23There is a right
16:25and an old way
16:26to keep a body
16:27and a house
16:27that runs
16:28on a few plain cheap things
16:31well understood,
16:32rather than a shelf
16:33of dear products
16:34for every little trouble.
16:36But tonight,
16:37you start with the basin.
16:39You soak and file
16:41and cream
16:42your tired feet.
16:43You clean the shoes
16:44they live in,
16:45and you keep
16:46every one
16:47of the honest warnings,
16:49above all,
16:50the doctor
16:50for a diabetic foot
16:52or a real infection
16:53or an open wound.
16:55And you will understand,
16:57as my mother did,
16:58that you cannot hide
17:00a trouble in the dark
17:01and expect it to heal,
17:02that a foot
17:03kept clean and dry
17:05and filed and creamed
17:06in a clean dry shoe
17:08simply cannot hold
17:10the roughness
17:11and the odor,
17:12and that the answer
17:13was a basin
17:14and a bottle
17:15and a file
17:16and a jar of cream
17:17in the cupboard
17:18all along,
17:19not a shelf
17:20of dear products
17:21nor a thing
17:22to be ashamed of.
17:23The folk who ran
17:25a whole house
17:26on one paycheck
17:27kept their feet
17:28with those few
17:29cheap things
17:30and walked on them
17:31into old age.
17:32And that is a thing
17:34we are only just
17:35starting to remember.
