00:00Cleveland Police is set to receive an additional £3.2 million to cover extra costs following a
00:06fatal crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough which killed seven people including two serving police
00:11officers. Policing Minister Sarah Jones announced the funding which comes on top of a further £2
00:16million previously promised by Home Secretary Shabana Mood. That earlier money hasn't yet
00:22been paid despite being pledged in August. The Home Office says it expects the money to arrive
00:27by the end of November. The crash happened on the 22nd of August at South Bank when a Volkswagen
00:33Passat travelling in the wrong direction along a dual carriageway collided with an oncoming
00:37marked police car. The two officers who died were PC Matthew Blades aged 37 and PC Tom Clough aged 38.
00:46Five men travelling in the Passat also died. In the aftermath Cleveland Police launched a large-scale
00:51operation targeting organised crime. The force says 50 people have been arrested as part of that operation.
00:57The extra funding comes amid concerns about how Cleveland Police is funded nationally
01:01and whether existing rules fairly reflect the demands placed on the force.
01:05Last week Cleveland Police and Crime Minister Mark Storey said the force was still waiting
01:10for the £2 million already promised. Labour MP Andy MacDonald who represents Middlesbrough and
01:15Thornaby welcomed the latest announcement but argued that the force needs a long-term solution.
01:21In the House of Commons he questioned whether lasting change would require a complete reconfiguration
01:25of policing across the country.
