Harry Haller lives with a painful sense of inner division one part of him longs for solitude, spirituality, and intellectual freedom, while another yearns for sensuality, intimacy, and the fullness of life. He sees himself as a stranger among others and, at the same time, finds himself imprisoned by his own consciousness. His inner crisis gradually becomes an exploration of identity, desire, and freedom, challenging the very idea of a single and immutable self.
