00:01I bet you think I'm in an old prison have a go at this watchtower but this is
00:09no prison this believe it or not is a graveyard I'm in Edinburgh and this
00:17watchtower was used to look over the dead bodies particularly back in 1832 as
00:25you can see him in the middle of a graveyard 1832 lots of body snatches and
00:30the reason there were body snatches in Edinburgh is because the medical
00:34fraternity they needed fresh corpses to study but there was only they're only
00:41illegally allowed to use criminals that had been executed and there's only about
00:4855 of them a year but they needed many many more times than that so what they
00:52many people did was they dig up fresh graves and so here they installed a
00:58tower where where guards would be up there looking down over the graveyard to
01:05make sure no one was pilfering fresh corpses of course the demand for corpses
01:11was such that many of those guards were supposedly bribed because they could
01:17make much more from from allowing someone to exhume a fresh corpse than they
01:23probably did from just earning their keep living in the tower as an interesting
01:28aside sometime after that era right up and I believe until the early 1930s a
01:35family of 10 lived inside the tower I'm not sure if they're looking out to see if
01:42there were any body snatches in them up in the 1930s though but how about that the
01:47cemetery which are burial ground not many people come to in Edinburgh everyone
01:51goes to the other ones but this here unbelievable piece of history
