00:00I wanted to talk Heisman because the Heisman Trophy is pretty interesting right now.
00:03If you look at, these are three wide receivers, the kid out of Oregon State, Jeremiah Smith,
00:09Malachi Tony.
00:10I mean, the numbers are wild.
00:12Only four wide receivers have ever won the Heisman.
00:15In the 91-year history of the award, only four wideouts have ever won it.
00:21Right now, one, two, three in terms of ranked nationally in receiving yards and receiving
00:29touchdowns.
00:30Jesse, Jeremiah, Malachi.
00:31These three kids are doing an incredible, incredible thing.
00:34If these guys maintain their pace, three of the 10 most prolific receiving seasons of the
00:41last 30 years will all happen in the same college football season.
00:47That's nuts.
00:49Among the top 10 wideout single-season power conference receiving yards since 1995, only
00:55four, Michael Crabtree, Terrence Williams, Brandon Cooks, and Justin Blackman had more yards
01:01through seven games than this year's trio.
01:05Okay?
01:06These guys are doing an incredible job.
01:08But here's the problem.
01:09The Heisman Trophy is not a wide receiver award.
01:12And we're talking about freshman, sophomore, junior, right?
01:16This is what's interesting about this.
01:19Jeremiah Smith might win the Heisman just based upon his current age because he's going pro
01:25after this year and Jesse and Malachi are coming back.
01:30I mean, that would be wild if that were to happen, that Jeremiah Smith wins it because his numbers
01:37aren't as good, as many yards, as many touchdowns, more than Tony.
01:42But Jeremiah Smith is considered like this, like unbelievable, surefire top five pick in the draft.
01:48Well, that's because the other two guys aren't going to be available in the NFL draft until next year.
01:54It's an award that doesn't go to wideouts.
01:57It's a quarterback award.
01:59Since it's a quarterback award, what do we do?
02:03Well, if you're betting, I think you have to take a long, hard look at Darren Mercer from Miami.
02:10Okay, it's going to be Mensa.
02:12That's a misspelling.
02:13It's going to be Mensa, not Mercer.
02:14It's Darian Mensa.
02:15The quarterback from Duke transferred over to Miami and now is lighting up everything because
02:20all you do is throw to Malachi Tony and he goes and scores touchdowns.
02:23CJ Carr is also in this conversation because he's a quarterback.
02:28He's 19 to one.
02:29You got these three players, two Miami, one Ohio State, and one quarterback from Notre Dame.
02:37If you're talking about the three finalists at the moment, we've got two Canes and one
02:41Buckeye showing up in New York from a Heisman Trophy finalist and maybe CJ Carr comes in.
02:46And then the question is going to be, what do the voters do?
02:49Because again, voting for a wide receiver is not something that normally happens for the
02:54voters.
02:55This is a quarterback award.
02:57The Blitnikoff award, that's for the wideouts.
02:59Okay, those are the guys that come in.
03:02So it is really interesting.
03:04And that's a good point.
03:04Miami plays Notre Dame very soon.
03:06So we could kind of determine that on the field.
03:08That's a good point.
03:09That's what?
03:10In two weeks, Miami plays Notre Dame.
03:14I don't know what to do with that.
03:15I don't like betting it anyway.
03:17Okay.
03:17I am not a fan of betting the Heisman or MVPs or coaches of the year.
03:21I don't like those markets because you're asking human beings to do the right thing.
03:24But there are trends you can look at in terms of how the voters are going to vote.
03:30Butchie says Trinidad Chambliss.
03:31He just lost at Texas.
03:34He may have lost the award by that.
03:37That might have cost Chambliss because I would have agreed with you.
03:41I would have said, oh, Heisman's going to Trinidad Chambliss.
03:45He's 30 to one after the loss.
03:4930 to one to win the Heisman.
03:51He's not even getting an invite to New York at the moment.
03:53Now, maybe that's a good price to take him at 30 to one at the moment and say, all right,
03:59take him currently.
04:00This is a quarterback award.
04:02This is not a wide receiver award, but the top three options right now, you can make a
04:07strong case or wide receivers.
04:09And then maybe Mensa from Miami, the quarterback from the Canes.
04:13If I were to bet, I would say that Darin Mensa wins it.
04:18So like that's just because it's a quarterback award.
04:22Jeremiah Smith is a little bit of a different angle because the public loves the kid.
04:29Every time you hear a broadcaster talk about Jeremiah Smith, it's surefire number one overall
04:34pick best wide receiver talent we've seen in the last 20 years, you know, setting all
04:39these records with the Buckeyes and the Big Ten and doing all of these big things.
04:43So maybe the betting public says, okay, Jeremiah Smith has done such an incredible job.
04:50He's going to win it.
04:52But the problem with Ohio State is what the quarterback's going to look like going forward.
04:58I have seen people that I really respect say the Buckeyes are not going to make the playoff.
05:05And I don't think that's crazy.
05:08The Buckeyes have got to figure out whether they've got an option, a true freshman option
05:14to come in because Julian Sane is done for the year.
05:17That kid wants to play in the pros.
05:19He's not coming back with a throwing shoulder injury.
05:22They're not going to risk a long-term problem.
05:24And that kid missing out on playing in the NFL.
05:27No way.
05:28So there is a big problem for Ohio State and thus a big problem for Jeremiah Smith.
05:34Now, if he goes out there and balls with a backup quarterback and puts up anywhere close
05:40to the numbers he had with Julian Sane, that's how you come in and say, oh, right.
05:45Okay.
05:46He's the best player in college football.
05:48He's going to win the Heisman Trophy.
