00:00Idina Menzel was not the first Elphabaugh. Even though Idina Menzel made Elphabaugh famous,
00:05she was not the first person to wear her pointed shoes. When the show was being developed,
00:10Stephanie Bloch read the part, but was ultimately replaced by Menzel, who had already received a
00:14Tony nomination, for Rent. It would be Bloch's day, however, she originated the role in the
00:20first national tour in 2005. From the very beginning, Wicked became a smash hit. It usually
00:26takes two to three years for even the most successful productions to recoup their initial
00:30investment. Within 14 months, Wicked had recouped the $14 million invested in it. Initially,
00:37critics were not supportive of the project. The Yellow Road is missing a few bricks,
00:41according to Robert Hurwitt of the San Francisco Chronicle. Approximately an hour into Wicked,
00:46this reviewer began to long for a pair of ruby slippers. As a result of these reviews,
00:51Polsman and Schwartz spent three months reworking the show before it opened on Broadway.
00:55In 2004, both Kristen Chenoweth and Idina Menzel were nominated for Best Actress Tony Awards.
01:02The same year, she was awarded the Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album, as was Chenoweth.
01:07In 1999, Chenoweth won her first Tony Award for her role as Sally in You're a Good Man,
01:13Charlie Brown. An injury prevented Menzel from performing her final performance as Elphaba.
01:19In the days leading up to her final performance, Menzel fell several feet through a trapdoor.
01:23According to the New York Times, Menzel was rushed to the hospital while still wearing her witch
01:28costume in green makeup. There is one secret to Elphaba's emerald skin, MAC Cosmetics. A MAC
01:34makeup product is responsible for Elphaba's brilliantly verdant skin, Chroma Cake, a solid
01:40watercolor cake activated with water. It is assumed that Wicked can obtain the product in quantities
01:45greater than 3.3 ounces. On the website, there is a choice of size. There is a great deal of
01:51power
01:51required for the show. The amount of electricity required to stage the show every night could
01:56power 12 homes. It is also necessary to use about 250 pounds of dry ice in order to create
02:02all of that dramatic fog in the production.
02:10There is a tribute in Wicked to the Wizard of Oz's, Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Throughout the song,
02:16Unlimited, I'm Limited, theme, the first few notes pay homage to the show's Wizard of Oz roots.
02:22Due to copyright laws, the first seven notes of the song can only be used. When you reach the eighth
02:27note,
02:27they can say, oh, you stole our tune, Schwartz has said as well as being disguised. It is also
02:32completely different rhythmically. It is also harmonized differently. It is over a different
02:37chord, but it is still the first seven notes of, Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
02:42Kristen Chenoweth performed a parody of, Popular, based on Anthony Wiener's scandal.
02:46On The Tonight Show in 2013, Chenoweth poked fun at the Anthony Wiener scandal by modifying the
02:52lyrics to her famous song. It has been reported that NASA has used Wicked's, Defying Gravity,
02:57as a wake-up call for astronauts. Astronauts in space often receive wake-up calls from NASA.
03:03There are times when the song is based on astronaut requests, and there are other times when it is
03:08space-themed or related to the day's activities. A recording of, Defying Gravity, PDF, was played on
03:14April 8, 2010, to wake-up mission specialist Dottie Metcalf-Lindenberger. Elphaba was not the name
03:20given to the Wicked Witch in L. Frank Baum's Oz stories. It was not until Gregory Maguire wrote Wicked that
03:26she was given a name. By using Baum's initials, Maguire came up with the moniker. The letter LFB
03:32stands for Elphaba. There is no precise estimate of how long it will take. We, can really take a look
03:38at it again and say, oh, we can do it. We have always wanted to do that, but could not
03:43do it on
03:43stage. But we can in a movie. It took a few years, but the film will finally arrive in theaters
03:49in
03:49December 2021. We are actually having a blast. The film adaptation will be directed by Stephen Daldry,
03:55who previously directed Billy Elliot. Wicked is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2021.
04:02Schwartz told Vulture last year that, we're starting to work on it. But don't expect Menzel
04:07and Chenoweth to reprise their roles. I would love to be in, the film, but they told us we were
04:12a little
04:12too old for it, Menzel told Andy Cohen in 2014.
