00:00So control of the U.S. House of Representatives hangs in the balance of these midterm elections with all 435
00:08seats up for grabs.
00:10A democratic victory could reshape the balance of power in Washington, placing strong legislative checks on President Donald Trump's domestic
00:18and foreign policies.
00:19For an analysis of what is at stake, our correspondent Dan Albright has the details.
00:26Good morning, thank you.
00:27So the House of Representatives is one of two chambers of the U.S. Congress, and all 435 seats are
00:35up for election in these midterms, as reps serve two-year terms.
00:39Its most immediate power is over legislation and government spending.
00:44Bills generally need approval from both the House and Senate, but an opposition majority in the House can block much
00:51of the president's domestic agenda and challenge how the government spends its money.
00:56The House also has broad investigative powers.
01:00Its committees can subpoena documents, call administration officials to testify, and investigate the executive branch.
01:08And it alone can impeach the president, although removing him from office requires a two-thirds vote in the Senate.
01:15That matters because Republicans have controlled the House during Trump's first two years back in office, giving his administration a
01:23largely supportive Congress.
01:25Democrats are now favored to win the chamber.
01:27And if they do, Trump would face more investigations and greater resistance on spending and legislation, including policies on immigration,
01:37military spending, and the war with Iran.
