Mumbai, Maharashtra: In an exclusive interview with IANS, actress Srishti Singh, who is making her film debut with the Tamil psychological thriller John Doe, opened up about her journey. She said that while she is excited, she is also nervous as acting for the camera requires unlearning a lot of theatre habits. Talking about her character Darshana, Srishti said she was attracted to the role because it is completely opposite to her real personality. She shared that Darshana is a non-glamorous woman dealing with grief, family struggles and emotional vulnerability, and is much more than just a mother. Hailing from a Hindi background, Srishti revealed she learned Tamil for six months for the film, which was shot on sync sound. She said authenticity was important to understand the character. She also spoke about choosing meaningful roles over glamour, her take on bold scenes and actor comfort, the superstar culture in South cinema and the gap for female-led films, and how actors are now judged by their social media following. She shared that she was even advised to buy followers to get work, but believes talent will eventually shine. Srishti urged audiences to watch John Doe, calling it a mind-bending thriller made with hard work by director Madhumita and co-stars Arjun Das, Sanchana and others. The actress also expressed her wish to work with actors like Manoj Bajpayee, Jaideep Ahlawat and Vijay Varma in Hindi cinema.

00:00Shushri ji first of all welcome to INS
00:04Shushri ji, first of all I want to say that you are connected to the theatre
00:08and you want to debut in John Doe, so how excited you are
00:13Thank you Sharik ji
00:16I am very excited, I am very nervous
00:21because the theatre has been long time
00:23but the medium of the screen is different
00:26and there is a lot of unlearning that is involved
00:29so I have gone through a lot of unlearning
00:31and then learning from the scratch and from the basic
00:36in order to be an actor for the screen
00:39so I am very excited for everyone to see what I have been able to do
00:44and what I have been able to achieve
00:47Yeah
00:49Let me tell you what was the film that you have been ready to do
00:54or what did you have seen in this film
00:56or what did you have seen in this film
00:57if you have seen this film
01:24or what did you have seen in this film
01:27Okay
01:27in order to go after this role
01:30because I think as an actor you want to be able to play a different role
01:36and you can play a different role
01:38which are very far from your lived reality or your real life
01:43so I think the first thing was that was an excitement
01:46and the second thing that I would like to say is that
01:51this is a Tamil language film
01:53and a Tamil language film
01:54and I am coming from Nauts
01:56and I am coming from Haryana
01:59I have never even thought or imagined myself
02:02that I am going to do a different language
02:05but because it is a very challenging thought
02:09to learn a new language
02:10to learn its nuances, its cultural nuances
02:14so this is also a very exciting point
02:18to challenge yourself
02:20to understand yourself
02:21to push boundaries and limitations
02:24to push where I can go
02:26to my authentic self
02:29to the character
02:32and to bring it out
02:34In the first film,
02:36it was so challenging
02:37that I didn't say that
02:41I was afraid
02:43that I was afraid
02:45because I said that
02:46this is such a character
02:47which is very different from the real Srishti
02:50which was very different from the real Srishti
02:51which was very different from the real Srishti
02:52it was a kind of a moment
02:52of a kind of a character
02:53and as I can think of it
02:58as a young man
02:58and to run it
03:01to take you through the process
03:02and to try it
03:02and make you through it
03:04I think it was very exciting
03:06yes, definitely
03:08because our industry operates
03:20It is beyond just a mother. It is about a woman who's going through a lot, who's gone through a
03:27lot, whether it's with regards to her family, her husband, her kids.
03:32She's an independent woman too. She's a woman who's struggling around her.
03:41Overall, Darshan's character was beyond a mother. I've seen her from that.
03:46How did you feel about Hindi?
03:49Oh, okay.
03:55It's obvious that it's a little bit of a fear.
03:59It's necessary because I come from the Hindi belt.
04:03From the north to the Hindi.
04:08Tamil is a very challenging and difficult language.
04:11But because I'm an actor and for me,
04:17the authenticity of that character is necessary.
04:20And when you don't learn the language,
04:22or you don't have to be stuck in the language,
04:25I think it's difficult to understand the language.
04:30Because the character operates in that language,
04:34and thinks in that language.
04:35So for me, it was very important that I can learn the language.
04:39And in the film shoot,
04:42about 6 months ago,
04:43I started learning Tamil language.
04:45And I'm also learning.
04:47It's a very difficult language.
04:48I won't say that I've been learning.
04:52But yes, I've been working very hard.
04:55And I've put my knowledge in learning the language.
05:00So you'll see how I did it.
05:03Because it was a sing sound.
05:04The whole film was sing sound.
05:06So as I've said live,
05:10pretty much that is what you will see.
05:13Today, the actor has a lot of glamour.
05:17So do you think that you don't see the glamour?
05:22Actually,
05:23Actually,
05:24My role as Darshana's character is non-glamourous.
05:27The whole premise is very tragic,
05:32very grief.
05:33She's dealing with a lot of emotional vulnerabilities.
05:37And actually, there is no glamour attached to it.
05:40But I'm sure there are many characters who demand glamourous.
05:47But I don't have a lot of meaning.
05:50But I don't have a lot of meaning.
05:51Because in the space, in the stage,
05:54I'm coming to this industry.
05:56I need to do meaningful, interesting characters.
05:59I need to do glamour roles.
06:01I need to do that.
06:04The point is that there is an actor who has been exposed to bold scenes.
06:08So where is it?
06:12We saw that there was a film called Jami Kapoor,
06:15and there were some scenes that had been pictured
06:20but with AI's help,
06:23and then there was an objection.
06:27Do you think that this is an actor's view?
06:34I think definitely, this is a very person to person, very important thing.
06:40All kinds of actors exist, some people are comfortable in doing such roles, some people are not.
06:48I think that communication and clarity is very important between the maker and the actor.
06:57In addition to that, if there is a role in the character, if there is a role in the role,
07:03if there are bold scenes, then they can be seen.
07:08But I think that this is an individual choice of who wants to do those kinds of roles and who
07:14doesn't.
07:15It's very important to keep your firm's stand on it.
07:19When you talk about South cinema, male superstars have a big fan following.
07:23Do you think that female-oriented films have become more?
07:30Do you think that female-oriented films have become more?
07:31Look, in South, the audience loves a lot.
07:35Male superstars and female actors.
07:39And I would say that female superstars also.
07:42You will know that Nayantara is known as the lady superstar.
07:52But I think that there is a little bit of a gap that exists.
07:59But there are many female actors who break boundaries and challenge boundaries.
08:05And if we look in the recent past, there are also many female-driven films that are performing well.
08:15And audiences are loving those films.
08:17So I think there is a gradual shift that is happening,
08:20both in terms of how the filmmakers also view a female leading project,
08:26and also how audiences are receiving it.
08:40I think I am very lucky and blessed to have met some of the best people in the South industry.
08:48In fact, whatever my situation has happened in the South industry,
08:53they are some of the really best people that I have come across in life,
08:57not just within an industry space.
09:01And I think that I am sure that all of the things that we hear,
09:06will happen and will happen.
09:09But more than that, I think I trust the people I am working with.
09:14And I would like to be very mindful of who I work with.
09:19And that's why we won't be afraid,
09:21but yes, I think I will be very careful of the people I interact with and choose to work with.
09:27Today, the actresses have been judged by acting,
09:29and people have judged by social media popularity.
09:33Why do you think that the talent is left behind this?
09:36This is an interesting question.
09:41I think that the people who are watching this is a lot of things,
09:44because social media has become a rage.
09:49And I think we are constantly on social media.
09:55And we are constantly on social media.
09:55And we are watching a film and watching Instagram.
09:57So it has definitely disrupted or in fact, if I were to say distracted also a lot of people.
10:09But I think that the right talent is,
10:12people who want to actually truly work as a performer, as an actor,
10:19they sometimes do struggle, but they also find their way out.
10:23It's not easy.
10:24There is a lot of struggle.
10:25In fact, without naming names,
10:27but I also said that you should buy followers.
10:31You don't have following.
10:33And that is how you are going to get work here.
10:37Because if I send an audition,
10:40then the next question comes to me is to send your Instagram profile.
10:43And a lot of times, I think,
10:46a lot of people get filtered because of the following.
10:49But I also think that your work,
10:52where you have to reach,
10:53where you have to reach.
10:56Lastly,
10:58looking forward,
10:59what would you like to give a message to your fans?
11:03First of all,
11:04I would like to say this,
11:06I would like to say,
11:08that our team,
11:11my co-actors,
11:13Arjunda,
11:14Sanchna,
11:14Zara,
11:15and all the actors,
11:16our director,
11:17our captain of the ship,
11:18Madhumita,
11:19Pritha Ma'am,
11:20our D.O.P.
11:21Our whole team,
11:22has made this film a lot.
11:25So,
11:26please,
11:26enjoy this film.
11:28It's a mind-bending psychological thriller.
11:31You'll enjoy it.
11:32You'll enjoy it.
11:34You'll enjoy it.
11:34You'll enjoy it.
11:35It's that kind of a film.
11:36Please,
11:36do go watch the film.
11:38Give us all your love.
11:39And then,
11:40take me where you want to take me.
11:43Really?
11:44Rasty,
11:44Two questions.
11:46Are you talking about Hindi films?
11:49Which actors and directors should come and work?
11:53Okay.
11:56This is really interesting.
11:57It's a place list.
11:58It's a place list.
12:01Okay.
12:03I think there are many actors and directors.
12:06Now I am doing my career in this space,
12:11It's just my starting point.
12:13So, I don't want to say that I want to work with them or with them.
12:18I want to work a lot.
12:20And I want to explore this medium through.
12:23And in our industry, there are brilliant actors and directors.
12:29I want to be associated with them and I want to work with them.
12:33There will be my favourite wish list.
12:37Actors' wish list.
12:45I think all actors, especially our new age actors,
12:53Jaidi Palawat, Vijay Verma, Manoj Bajpayee,
12:58all these people, I think they are doing phenomenal work in what they are doing.
13:05And it will be my honour and privilege to be able to work with them someday.
13:11Yeah, thanks.
