00:01Now, how does the Jeffrey Simmons and DeForest Buckner trade affect Jerron Payne,
00:08who is the most marketable commodity that the commanders have?
00:12Not the only one.
00:13As we discussed yesterday and as others have discussed,
00:16I mean, obviously, they've got plenty of guys on one-year expiring deals,
00:20i.e., Stefan Diggs, I mean, Deami Brown, right?
00:30Russell Douglas, guys like that.
00:34Frankie Louvoo, Dorrance Armstrong, guys of that ilk.
00:42Again, Jerron Payne is not the only one.
00:44He's the most intriguing one, I think, to anybody that pays attention, right?
00:52Because we know what Jerron Payne can be when Jerron Payne wants to be what Jerron Payne could be
00:58and is at times.
01:00We know what he can be.
01:02But he's not Jeffrey Simmons, and he's not DeForest Buckner,
01:06and now those guys are off the market.
01:09But is he number three?
01:13I had somebody yell at me on Twitter.
01:16Again, we were talking about that before the show.
01:21So, and I had made the point, I had made the point, it was Michael Jeremiah.
01:29I had made the point with the ESPN breaking news bulletin about a monster deal, obviously,
01:37could have a big impact on any return slash deal for Derron Payne,
01:42especially considering the 49ers trade this week to bring back DeForest Buckner.
01:46So, again, Buckner and Simmons, both now off the market, both in new homes, both cleared out.
01:53The question is, is what teams are left that need a defensive lineman, a defensive tackle primarily?
02:04And so, I got a couple of tweets back.
02:08Coach Arian said, I doubt we can get a first, but maybe two seconds or a second and a third
02:13round pick.
02:13I do think that would be too high, Coach.
02:17But, you know, he says his market value is interesting, not a ton of production,
02:21but I feel like his name still holds some weight in the league.
02:24I agree.
02:25He needs to be more consistent.
02:27He's been better this year than he was last year or, you know, basically since he got the contract.
02:33But he's still not consistent enough.
02:35So, Michael Jeremiah, not Daniel Jeremiah, says, LOL, Simmons and Payne play different, I mean, he said sports, which obviously
02:46not true.
02:47So, I assume he meant spots.
02:50Buckner, at best, is the comp.
02:52Two seconds, question mark, LOL.
02:56Now, that was sort of in relation to what Coach Arian wrote about, about the compensation,
03:02and sort of what I was saying about Buckner and Simmons and that market being shaped and therefore a little
03:13bit dwindled, right?
03:16Because, again, San Francisco and Chicago clearly had interior defensive tackle needs.
03:22So, I started to think, maybe I screwed this up, right?
03:27And here's what we know.
03:30So, Jeffrey Simmons is arguably the best defensive interior tackle in the league.
03:38Arguably.
03:39Right?
03:40Again, you can make an argument for, I guess, DeForest Buckner.
03:44You can make an argument for Jalen Carter when his head is squared on straight, which it's not right now.
03:49Who's coming here on Sunday.
03:50You can make an argument for Sexy Dexy, now with Cincinnati, not with the Giants anymore.
03:56You can make an argument for all those guys.
03:59Right?
04:00But Jeffrey Simmons, I think, is probably number one.
04:04He's, again, gone to Chicago.
04:06Big cost.
04:07We know that.
04:08But he's defined as an interior defensive line.
04:12Right?
04:14And that's the position that he plays, as we talked about.
04:19And he plays the run on the pass pretty damn well.
04:21And we can talk about Jeffrey Simmons until the cows come home.
04:26He plays, you know, most of his snaps.
04:31Most of his snaps on the interior.
04:34But he plays some of his snaps at the left edge, according to PFF, who charts all this stuff.
04:41Well, Deron Payne, in previous iterations of this defense, like last year and in years past, has largely been an
04:55interior defensive tackle.
04:56He obviously aligns at different spots with three-man fronts and plays a different type of spot and alignment and
05:09whatnot.
05:10Like, again, PFF this year, just for what it's worth.
05:13PFF has him playing 74 snaps overall at defensive left tackle, 50 snaps at defensive right tackle, 84 snaps at
05:26left end, and 26 at the Leo position.
05:29I, again, I got it, he's not a true defense, they don't have a true nose tackle, or they don't
05:38play a 4-3 front primary, where you line up two defensive tackles, you know, one at the three, one
05:45at the one, and away you go.
05:48But the point being, and maybe I'm missing something, Deron Payne is still considered largely an interior defensive tackle.
05:59That you can move to the edge or to the end spot and align philosophically and differently, depending on what
06:08scheme you're looking at and what scheme you're trying to possess and launch.
06:12And that's good for Deron Payne and theoretically good for the commanders, because the more versatility you have, the more
06:20things you can do, A, that gives more value perceived, right?
06:28And, again, even with Simmons, who is largely an interior defensive tackle, he plays out at the end spot.
06:37Guys don't play one position and one position alone, generally speaking, anymore.
06:42They're all over the place.
06:44You have to be.
06:45Am I missing anything on Deron Payne being largely considered a defensive tackle and, therefore, the market of DeForest Buckner
06:54and, and, who got traded today from, Jeffrey Simmons, sorry, getting traded, right?
07:05Like, that, it's the same market that we're talking about, right?
07:08Or am I missing something here?
07:09I mean, I feel like it depends on the kind of front that you're, you know, utilizing.
07:16I feel like when you talk about Jeffrey Simmons, like, you don't, like, realistically want to see him line up
07:24as a nine tech or, you know, somewhere out there.
07:27But I think between a three and a five tech, like, that's probably, like, where he's best aligned when you
07:32talk about end.
07:34And I think Deron Payne, at least, like, when he was with the commanders, like, you know, he's your typical,
07:40you know, interior defensive tackle.
07:43Now, when he was two years ago, when we were struggling to stop the run, they did put him out
07:49at edge, you know, to help slow down the outside rushes and things of that nature.
07:55So, I think it's more so, like, how you want to necessarily use these guys.
07:59But Deron Payne might be best used, like Jeffrey Simmons is used, in a three tech or five tech, as
08:04opposed to a stand-up edge nine, like, somewhere out there.
08:09Correct.
08:10You, you, if you're running a wide nine base.
08:13Yeah.
08:13Like the Eagles a lot of times do, right?
08:15Yep.
08:16You don't want Deron Payne.
08:17No, you don't.
08:18Rushing from Baltimore when he's trying to play in Landover, okay?
08:23Yeah.
08:24You get the comp.
08:26My point is, the market is what the market is, and it's defined now and shaped by these two trades,
08:34Buckner to San Francisco from Indy, and Simmons today from Tennessee to Chicago.
08:39And just on the surface, I think Payne would, if he's not next up, he's second next up?
08:48Probably in terms of the available options on the trade market for a versatile defensive tackle slash end, depending on
08:59front, depending on usage, depending on design, depending on all of that crap.
09:03But it's not like he's, his market and the return potentially for the commanders is not affected one way or
09:12the other.
09:13Could be a good effect.
09:14Could be a bad effect.
09:16Shaped by Jeffrey Simmons return.
09:19Obviously, he's not getting that.
09:20But the fact that Jeffrey Simmons went for what he got, DeForest Buckner went for what he returned, and that's
09:27more likely the comp in terms of compensation.
09:30Again, he's not going to get Jeffrey Simmons money in, I mean, a return, and nor should anybody expect that.
09:36But my point being is, now, Deron Payne could be number one on some teams' lists.
09:42If you're looking for interior, exterior, or interior flexible defensive alignment help, depending on how you evaluate guys, depending on
09:52what kind of front you want to run, depending on all the different things that go into this.
09:56My point being is, these two guys out of the way, these two guys got what they got, now it's
10:01time to get down to business for the commanders when it comes to Deron Payne.
10:05Because, as I said yesterday, he's not coming back here on a long-term deal, and he shouldn't.
10:10I don't think that's prudent in any way, right?
10:15I mean, if we're talking $27 million on average per year, not enough consistency there, right?
10:25You would agree with that?
10:25I would agree.
10:26Okay.
10:27Would you franchise tag him?
10:29And I don't know what the franchise tag number would be.
10:31But remember, it's for all defensive linemen, not just interior.
10:35And interior guys are now making $25 plus.
10:38So it's probably, I would guess, $27 to $30-ish million next year.
10:44I don't know exactly.
10:45But somewhere in that ballpark, would you do that?
10:48No.
10:49Okay.
10:49So the answer is, well, let me rephrase the question.
10:56Does a win on Sunday night shape how you operate the decision?
11:06Meaning, if you win on Sunday night, and yet some team, fill in the blank team, maybe Jacksonville
11:12has been tied, you know, to him.
11:15Others could be.
11:16Say Jacksonville comes to you and gives you, and is offering you a third-round pick in 2027, right?
11:22Or, God, I mean, even a second-round pick.
11:25Great.
11:28If I win on Sunday night, that has no impact on whether I trade De'Ron Payne or not.
11:35Meaning, you would be 2-3, I'm sorry, 2-4-1, right?
11:422-4-1.
11:43You beat the Eagles, who largely stink right now because of injury, because of whatever,
11:50because their defense is nowhere near as good as people thought it would be.
11:552-4-1.
12:00That does not, if they win on Sunday night, that does not change my opinion whatsoever.
12:05I am trading De'Ron Payne at all costs.
12:10It's a matter of when, not if, me.
12:13Because he's not coming back next year under a tag or a long-term deal.
12:18In my opinion, and I think in any reasonably sane opinion.
12:24Is that fair?
12:26Yeah.
12:26Or does it matter to you whether they win or lose on Sunday night?
12:29Because if they lose, obviously, it's gangbusters.
12:33But, I mean, if they win, people are going to say,
12:34Oh, no, no, no, no, no.
12:35Don't break up the almighty, fearful, powerful, you know, capital punishment defensive line.
12:43I mean, my thing is, though, Chris, who's going to play in place of him, though?
12:49Charles O'Minahue is still working his way back.
12:54Javon Kinlaw is down right now.
12:56Like, he's battling an injury.
12:58Well, Johnny Newton is coming back.
12:59I understand what you're saying.
13:01Like, we should definitely get something in return before we lose out on that ability.
13:06But what if, you know, somebody's only coming to you with a 7?
13:08Like, am I willing to –
13:11Yeah.
13:13I mean, and that's a good point, right?
13:15If the –
13:17Seventh round –
13:19Then I –
13:23Penn –
13:24This game.
13:25Like, I mean, if –
13:27If –
13:28Help me on –
13:30Tonight, Sunday night –
13:35I'm a winnable division.
13:36And the best I can get from any team that's calling me is a seventh round pick in, let's just
13:42call it 2028, which sounds ridiculous.
13:45But just let's say – or a conditional sixth round pick in 2028, which, again, he should fetch more.
13:54Like, then I don't have to make that move right then and there.
13:57I can wait a little bit because the trade deadline isn't Tuesday of next week.
14:03It's the next Tuesday.
14:05But if I – if somebody steps up and offers me a third round pick or, God forbid, higher?
14:11We get a third.
14:12I'm stepping my – get to stepping, pal.
14:14Yeah.
14:15I'll figure it out.
14:16I mean, that makes sense, though.
14:17I'll put you at defensive tackle.
14:18I'm not that eager.
14:20Like, that's why I mentioned, you know, if somebody comes with a sixth or seventh, it's like, do I really
14:24want a late round draft pick for, you know, a guy that's –
14:27Actually, he's playing – I think he's playing hard amongst our defensive tackles.
14:31Anyway, and –
14:32Oh, he's been there past defensive linemen.
14:34And if we're going out and winning Sunday's game, we go out and beat the Rams as well, like, he
14:38could be helpful as the season goes on.
14:40So I'm not that eager to give him up for a sixth or seventh round.
14:43But somebody come with a second, a third, something along those lines.
14:47What if it's a 20-28 second round pick?
14:5120-28, not 20-27.
14:5420-28 second round pick.
14:58And they win on Sunday night.
15:01Yeah.
15:02I mean, a second is still –
15:04A second.
15:05I think – I probably would, to be honest.
15:08I'd probably make that trade, too.
15:09I think I would.
15:10I don't know if I would go third or fourth round.
15:13Pick 20-28.
15:15Yeah, that's too far.
15:15I mean, again, 20-27 is different than 20-28.
15:18And this administration might not be here in 20-28.
15:21Yeah.
15:21So they've got to get –
15:23And that's the argument, I guess, against trading Deron Payne, is if this administration can figure out a way to
15:28wiggle their asses out of whatever this malaise is,
15:32which has lasted for a year and a half, you know, again, there's so many different ways we can go.
15:37I wanted to tackle a wild Jaden Daniels rumor that – I guess the junkies we're talking about, I didn't
15:44really hear the conversation.
15:45They got crushed, too.
15:46What people have said, you know, whatever.
15:48I want to tackle that as well.
15:50If you want to jump in on the Deron Payne situation, which I think is fascinating, right?
15:55Does it matter whether they win on Sunday night or not?
15:57Does it matter what you're going to get, what you're offered in return?
16:00Are you in?
16:01Are you out?
16:02Totally.
16:03Do you agree, disagree with the notion that he ain't coming back on a franchise tag or a long-term
16:08deal?
16:09So your two best options to retain him for the future don't really make a whole lot of sense.
16:14Where are you at on that?
16:16And then we'll tackle this silly Jaden Daniels rumor next on the Team 980.
16:20Stay with us.
