Refinery29 caught up with Evan Rachel Wood when she was in New York promoting the film and talked everything from parenting in Hollywood, the necessary death of Charlie Countryman, and even a little 10 Things I Hate About You nostalgia.
Transcript
00:07The movie was great and kind of stood the test of time because the casting was amazing.
00:14First of all, it was like Heath Ledger and just Gordon-Levitt and Julia Stiles, you know, before they had
00:18really blown up.
00:19So they were all amazing and I think for that genre, it was just good.
00:22It had heart and it was a little edgier and, you know, the female protagonist was kind of a badass
00:27and kind of unlikable.
00:28And I think our film is similar in that way that, you know, for the genre, it's, you know, for
00:36a romantic comedy, it's a little more edgy and a little, the protagonists aren't always likable.
00:43But I think that's what's great about it.
00:46I mean, people do it, so I'm just kind of winging it right now.
00:50He is upstairs with my husband and we tag team because we both work.
00:55But so far, so good. So far, so good.
00:57You know, I want to keep my child as protected as possible from, you know, paparazzi and outside sources, things
01:03like that.
01:04Because they, we have a choice, but they don't. So I'd like to keep them as protected as possible.
01:10Hi, I'm Charlie Countryman.
01:12Can you tell me what happened with my father?
01:14I'm super nervous right now.
01:16I mean, for me, I usually pick projects that I can relate to in some way and then it's like,
01:20it's like therapy, you know.
01:23So I think, I think I worked out lots of, lots of my own relationship demons from this film.
01:30And, and put some things to rest.
01:32Because this is a wild experience for me.
01:35Maybe you have some kind of fantasy about helping the woman in the faraway land.
01:39I think, I think the ending is very ambiguous in that way.
01:42And I, you know, they could end up having this beautiful life together or they could say goodbye and that
01:47could be it on that day.
01:48You don't know.
01:48I think, yeah, what is important is, is the soul searching for Shia's character and him, him going on this
01:54journey.
01:54And also them finding each other when they needed each other the most.
01:57It's these two people that have both experienced a loss of one of their parents and, you know, I think
02:03that's what brings them together.
02:06Are you in love?
02:08Are you in some three days of the condo or something?
02:14Where's he going?
02:15Where's he going?
02:17Where's he going?
02:17Oh, I'm going down there.
02:22You're meant to leave.
02:27I hope you don't die, kiddo.
02:33If I do, I die for love.
02:35Then cool way to go.
