00:03Hi everyone, it's Taylor with Refinery29. With all the different options for curling
00:07irons out on the market, it can be a little tough to choose the one that's right for you.
00:10So today I'm going to show you a couple of options, as well as teach you some tips and
00:14tricks for basic curling techniques. So how do you know which curling iron is the best one for
00:19you? Well, the traditional barrel with a clamp on it is going to give you a more natural wave,
00:24but it's also going to be a little bit more damaging to your hair, since you're singeing
00:27the ends of your hair into the clamp. The clampless irons are going to give you a better hold
00:32that's going to last longer, since they're usually higher heat, but they can be a little
00:36tricky to use since you don't have anything to hold your hair in place, and you have to
00:39rely on your hand. So today I'm going to show you how both of them work, as well as give
00:43you a couple of tips to achieve the perfect curl. The best advice I can give is to work
00:47in small sections of your hair. You're going to get a better curl that's going to last longer.
00:51A lot of people make the problem of being overzealous when they're curling their hair, and they take
00:55large chunks and the curl doesn't end up lasting all day long. So starting with the
00:59clampless curling iron, we're going to go above the head. This is actually going to give us
01:04a more natural curl by working over our head. Since there's nothing holding the hair to the
01:08iron, we're going to have to work with both of our hands on this. So I'm just going to
01:12take the hair and hold the iron close to the head, and now we're going to wrap it around the
01:17barrel.
01:19You're going to want to hold it here and just hang on to the ends of your hair so that
01:22they
01:22don't get singed. This is why this is a little bit healthier for your hair, you're not ruining
01:26the ends of your hair. And then we're just going to let it go, and you end up with a
01:31really great natural curl. One of the reasons I really like the clampless barrel is that you
01:36get a more natural wave because the ends aren't stuck into the barrel. This means that they're
01:41not going to curl around like a ringlet, and they're going to be a little bit straighter and
01:44more beachier almost at the ends. So using the clamp curling iron, which is one you're probably
01:50all used to. We're going to take a piece of the hair, not burning ourselves. There's a couple
01:59different ways that you can use these. One's a little bit healthier for the hair than the other,
02:04and I'm going to show you both of them. But this is the traditional way to use one,
02:07you're going to want to curl away from your head. So going all the way to the bottom.
02:13See how the hair is curling away from my face? And this is just going to be a looser,
02:24relaxed curl. The second way to use the traditional curling iron so that it's more like a
02:29clampless curling iron is to grab a chunk of the hair.
02:34I like to go a little bit up and flip the hair around the base and then wind it
02:44around. You're going to want to be really careful with this that you don't burn your hair and hang
02:48on to the ends of the pieces like this. This is going to give you that really, really loose curl
02:52curl that you see in Victoria's Secret catalogs a lot. And then you're just going to let go.
03:00And you're left with just this very pretty loose curl, as opposed to the stiffer, more defined curl
03:05that we get from the clamp barrel. So hopefully you learned some tips and tricks for how to get the
03:10perfect curl, as well as the right curling tool for you.
