Refinery29 tackles the DIY gallery wall for your home with a little help from Bill Powers, owner of NYC-based Half Gallery and co-owner of the art collection company Exhibition A.
Transcript
00:00You know what's weird? It's a level with tapered edges, which doesn't make a lot of sense, right?
00:08Hi, I'm Chloe with Refinery29, and I'm here with Bill Powers today, the co-founder of Exhibition A and owner
00:14of Half Gallery in New York here.
00:16And we're going to be hanging some pieces of art that were curated by Refinery and Exhibition A.
00:21And we're going to do it for your home so you can figure out how to do it if you're
00:24not a professional.
00:25Hopefully without making too many holes in your walls.
00:28Exactly, so let's get hanging.
00:30What you'll need is a hammer, scissors, tape measure, a level, nails, masking tape, newspaper, and your art.
00:38So the idea is to kind of do a template on the wall, right?
00:42Yeah, I think we just want to cut out the silhouette so that you can put that up, level it
00:46out, figure out where you're going to put your nails before you actually hang the thing.
00:50How many pieces do you think is good or what's too much on a wall?
00:55It kind of depends on the focal point. You know, if everything is about the same size, it might be
01:01nice to have it more formally, like all in one row.
01:04But if you have pieces that are a variety of sizes, then I think it's more accommodating to mixing it
01:11up and kind of staggering the art.
01:12Gotcha.
01:13I really love this piece by Riley Payne, which says 200 missed calls. How do you interpret that?
01:20A long night, I think.
01:22But a good time, right?
01:22Yeah, but a wonderful time.
01:24All right, so let's trace this out.
01:26All right.
01:26We got a pencil. I guess you probably don't want to use the obituaries while you're doing this, right?
01:31Oh, it's a little rough.
01:31Yeah.
01:32Why don't we just try mapping out the back for the nail? This you can get rid of. Yeah, so
01:38why don't you try finding where the wire is in there, pull it taut.
01:41Got it.
01:42This piece by Tim Barber and it's called Untitled Central Park. He's shot the cover of the New York Times
01:49Magazine before. I thought this was a nice kind of exuberant coming to New York moment captured here.
01:58I love it.
01:59Well, right now there's not much to see. I kind of like doing the bigger ones that you have, the
02:05more substantial pieces first, because the little ones you can always like make as little satellites around the other one.
02:12So let's put the Francesca Di Matteo up here. The cool thing about her, she also makes ceramics, so you
02:19get a little feel for that with the picture of the vase and flowers and there's kind of a dude
02:24peeking out through that.
02:25I really like him behind there.
02:26On this side, I think we should do the Mark Borthwick.
02:30Do we know who the people are?
02:31I think these are his kids.
02:32Oh, nice.
02:33And a variant or a different version of this picture was the cover of the last Passion Pit album.
02:40Oh, awesome.
02:41Well, I really love this method, how easy it is to kind of mix things around and you don't have
02:46to make a ton of holes in the wall like I've done.
02:48Yeah, I don't mind if you make the extra holes as long as when you readjust the hole is still
02:52behind the piece.
02:54Exactly.
02:54The idea is put the nail in and then we're going to rip the paper down.
02:58You know what we're going to do?
02:59We're going to put one nail in and then we'll get the level and I think that looks pretty level.
03:04Generally, even though it makes it a little bit more difficult to make it level, to put two nails in
03:09here, it's going to be a little more stable.
03:11Okay, so it's balanced.
03:12Okay.
03:13I don't know about putting the kids next to the scotch being poured but maybe that's how these children were
03:18made.
03:19We don't know.
03:20So I'm pretty happy how we custom these together.
03:23Thank you for coming down to visit us.
03:25It looks awesome.
03:26I love it.
03:27I think so, yeah.
03:27And you gave us some great tips.
03:28I think anyone can do this in their home as well.
03:31Absolutely.
03:32Awesome.
03:33And it's all available on Refinery.
03:34So thanks.
03:35We'll see you next time.
03:36See you next time.
