00:00Hi, I'm Jordan Rees and I'm 10 years old.
00:03These things are hard to use with one hand.
00:05When my hands are wet, it's hard to use these.
00:08I want to collapse a little arm that would fold up and fit in my pocket,
00:14and that could help me grab the paper towels.
00:17Thank you!
00:32My name is Mana. We are the prosthetic hand team.
00:35We're spending 72 hours to build a prosthetic hand for Jordan.
00:40Jordan seems like a really, like, spunky, creative girl,
00:44and I think she wants something out of the box.
00:49Today we're at Tom Maker Event here at NOVA Labs.
00:53In a TomMakeathon for assistive technology,
00:56we connect people with disabilities and people that can develop solutions,
00:59makers.
01:00We bring them together for 72 hours to design and build prototypes of solutions.
01:07Vlil, you like the Vlil? We knew you would.
01:09You see people who come from completely different backgrounds,
01:13engineers, designers, programmers, all working towards a common goal.
01:18With any hackathon, it's going to be a little frenetic.
01:20It's compacting what would take months into just days,
01:24but that pressure is the impetus to really come up with novel,
01:28new solutions.
01:30And you can adjust it to the right length.
01:32They're intense, but it's also energetic.
01:35Can't you feel it in the air?
01:40That part locks, and then that part's just this.
01:43It just grabs.
01:44Jordan, she has a very specific task that she wants to be able to do,
01:48which is to be able to pull paper towels from those paper towel dispensers
01:51that require you to use both hands.
01:53She wanted something that she could put in her pocket.
01:55I don't think it's going to be pocket-sized.
01:58But so for right now, this is the idea that we're going to test by the end of today,
02:01and then tomorrow actually build it.
02:04I just don't want to waste time.
02:06We only have 72 hours, and I really want to make something good.
02:09make this whole thing taller.
02:11Like, let's say, like this.
02:13Because she's got all that arm to use.
02:16You know what I mean?
02:17Where it's like, if it's thin like this...
02:18Cordability.
02:20Yeah.
02:21Cordability.
02:22Jordan has the cutest smile I've ever seen,
02:25and she seems like the most creative, cool kid ever.
02:28So today we're showing Jordan prototypes to make it better
02:31so that it would be something that she uses.
02:34Hello.
02:36Hello.
02:36Hey, how's it going Jordan?
02:38Good.
02:39This is just like an idea, and then we're going to make a more legitimate one that looks nicer.
02:43So this can, for example, like check it out how we can make a bunch of different things that will
02:48just screw on.
02:49That's a good idea.
02:50What do you think of an armband like this?
02:53Is it like comfortable?
02:54Yeah.
02:55And we can like decorate it?
02:57Yes.
02:58We want to ask you that.
03:00What do you like?
03:01Unicorns.
03:02Unicorns.
03:03Awesome.
03:03Purple.
03:04Yeah.
03:05What do you think about the prototype?
03:07I think it's pretty cool.
03:09Yay.
03:10We're glad you like it.
03:11What would you want to change?
03:13I think it would make it smaller.
03:15And fluffiness.
03:17Fluffiness?
03:18Alright.
03:19Tomorrow we're going to try and make all those additional attachments, make it pretty.
03:22What are your thoughts?
03:23I think it's good.
03:25Sweet.
03:26Well, it was awesome talking, Ian.
03:28See you.
03:28Bye.
03:29Bye.
03:31Awesome.
03:35We are currently at the end of day two of the Tom DC Makeathon.
03:40People here are just really getting into it and we've seen some really amazing projects.
03:44In the broader sense, Tom as a way of directing technology into social improvement, someone describes a challenge that either
03:55do not have a solution at all or the existing solutions are too expensive to be made available for most
04:00people.
04:00And it is precisely that nexus of government failure and market failure that Tom is designed to address.
04:08That's kind of why I love being a maker.
04:11We don't care about the money.
04:13We care about the impact we make.
04:15So since we already have her prototype, I just figured I'd make her a fluffy one.
04:20Do I wish I had another hour?
04:23Definitely.
04:24We're working on stabilizing it all and making it a little better to use.
04:30I'm used to all-nighters.
04:31I'm used to working fucking hard.
04:34Yeah.
04:36But I love it though.
04:37I'm not going to call it a night tonight.
04:40It's...
04:41No, I'm going to keep working.
04:46Alright, so day three, we haven't gotten any sleep.
04:50And we have a few prototypes to show you.
04:53This is kind of what we made.
04:54I know it's still not something that will fit in your pocket, but it's pretty sturdy.
04:59You've got your baggie full of attachments.
05:01This one's a clip.
05:03A little clippy clip.
05:04So this is what your arm stretcher looks like.
05:06And this one, because the phone is a little bit heavier, is going to be harder to use.
05:10Cards.
05:12Awww.
05:13The poker.
05:14We made you another arm.
05:16And I know how you said you really like fuzzy.
05:19All the attachments that work on Mana's one work on this one as well.
05:23I love seeing that smile on your face.
05:2672 hours is not a lot of time.
05:28Yeah, but it was so fun.
05:29Thank you so much for this experience and letting us share this with you.
05:32And...
05:38Put all the unicorns on!
05:42All the unicorns!
05:44Oh, cool.
05:45There's a cardboard one.
05:47Ooh.
05:48Wow, that's a lot of decoration.
05:52Well, I mean, you've got to use it all.
05:56I'm just so glad it came together.
05:59Stressful, but successful.
06:01I can't hardly im repeating.
06:01So..
06:04Tired.
06:04Let's go.
06:05Yeah,low.
06:05Yeah,low.
06:06I'm simple.
06:06Let's
