Refinery29's Lucie Fink spends each day for one week tackling one of her deepest fears.
Transcript
00:00I'm Lucy Fink, and this is 5 Days of Facing My Fears.
00:08I recently came across the YouTube channel of Michelle Poehler, an incredible woman who quit her job one day
00:14so that she could take on a project that had her facing 100 fears in 100 days.
00:21The rest of the videos in Try Living with Lucy have me eating luxurious foods and trying cool spa treatments
00:28and traveling to different parts of the world, so why on earth, if I'm the producer of this series,
00:33would I put myself in a position to be scared?
00:36And then I stopped and I said, Lucy, stop.
00:39Not everything is easy. If you want to grow as a person, you need to challenge yourself.
00:44And now on Monday, I'm going to pull out what I have to do today.
00:48Okay.
00:48And then we'll go from here and plan the rest of my week, okay?
00:52Alright, here it goes.
00:54Good luck.
00:55I hope it's a really scary one.
00:57I hope it's not.
01:01What?
01:01Oh, God!
01:04What?
01:05Eating crickets.
01:06Oh my God!
01:07I was hoping I didn't get that one.
01:10No!
01:10Day one, I ate crickets.
01:13And I challenged myself to eat not one, not two, but three crickets.
01:18Before I started, my cameraman ate a few just to show me that it would be okay.
01:24It's kind of like corn.
01:27Are you kidding?
01:30Holy sh...
01:31I can't do it, Andrew.
01:32I can't do it.
01:35Step one is get used to holding them.
01:38Oh my God.
01:39I don't want it.
01:40And what did it feel like?
01:41Did you...
01:41Wait, it moved!
01:44Should I throw it up and catch it in my mouth?
01:46That's fun.
01:46I'll throw it up and catch it.
01:48Wait, it broke!
01:49It broke in the hand.
01:50It's just protein.
01:51It's just corn.
01:52It's just corn and protein.
01:54Wait, it's just corn and Trump.
01:55Oh my God!
02:04Oh my God!
02:05I can't do it.
02:06And then I'm gonna hit.
02:06It broke in the hand.
02:07I can't do it.
02:10Okay.
02:19I can't do it.
02:20I can't do it.
02:20I can't do it.
02:22I can't do it.
02:26Not bad, but it's a cricket.
02:28Looking back on today's experience,
02:30I was really, really freaking out.
02:33I mean, like borderline overreacting.
02:35And I know that, and I'm comfortable saying it.
02:37So I'm glad I conquered that fear,
02:39but never, ever, ever, ever doing that again.
02:45So on Tuesday, let's see what we've got.
02:51Oh my god.
02:52And, whew, that was.
02:55Biking around New York City.
02:56That's scarier than eating the freaking cricket.
02:59You think?
03:00When I moved here, I saw everybody biking.
03:02I thought it was safe, so I did it,
03:04and I was terrified, and I went back home.
03:06Like, after two blocks, I'm like, I'm not doing it.
03:08I'm not dying today.
03:09I have now lived in New York City for two years,
03:12and surprisingly enough, I've never biked here.
03:16To paint you a nice New York City picture,
03:18in the past three weeks,
03:19I myself have witnessed three bikers get hit by cars,
03:22and two pedestrians get hit by bikers.
03:25This city is loud, it's fast-moving,
03:28people are everywhere.
03:30It is wild. Wild.
03:33And you're not allowed to bike on the sidewalk,
03:35so you need to stay in the streets with the cars,
03:37or in the narrow bike lanes.
03:38I felt like people could tell
03:40that it was my first time riding through the city.
03:42Someone waved to me and was like,
03:44you got this, girl, keep going.
03:46I rode through some incredibly tight spaces,
03:48scared every minute of the way
03:50that a car door was gonna open up and just take me out,
03:53but I made it!
03:54I'm alive!
03:55Two fears down, and I'm a cricket-eating cyclist.
03:59I kind of feel like the queen of the world right now.
04:01Woo-hoo!
04:08Let's do it.
04:10Please be something easy.
04:13No.
04:14Look, the more uncomfortable you get,
04:16the greater the video and the greater the reward.
04:18You're right.
04:19Oh, this will be good.
04:20Okay.
04:21I'll be uncomfortable.
04:22Reading negative internet comments out loud.
04:25Wow.
04:26That's a great one.
04:27You guys know me.
04:28I host a lot of video content here.
04:31I upload it to YouTube and Facebook and Snapchat Discover,
04:34and then I invite the world to comment below
04:36and give me their feedback.
04:38Most of the time, the feedback that I'm getting from the world is awesome.
04:41But when I come across something rude,
04:43the last thing I want to do is read it out loud
04:45and broadcast it to the world.
04:47So today, I took on that fear head-on.
04:50Did she go five days without a phone or five days without food?
04:57That's mean.
04:58You are dumb.
04:59What a boring, self-absorbed little dweeb.
05:02F*** off, knobhead.
05:03I find her almost constant voice fry intensely irritating.
05:08Sorry, Kathy.
05:10Stupid f***.
05:11Can't even go five minutes without craving attention and validation from others.
05:15Yes, I can.
05:17F*** off, you dumb f***.
05:18I hope you f***ing die.
05:20That's a comment.
05:21What a very sad loser.
05:24Sweetie, eat a sandwich.
05:26I would love a sandwich right now.
05:30What are we going to do about these people?
05:32Haters gonna hate.
05:33If I'm going to successfully progress in my career, I need to be 100% okay with ingesting
05:38the negative comments that come my way.
05:40I need to be able to read it aloud, grasp my personal feelings on it, and move along.
05:48Alright.
05:50Thursday.
05:52Let's see what's in store.
05:56Speak to a psychic.
05:57Oh my god.
05:58Why are you afraid of that?
06:00Psychics and mediums.
06:01Creepy.
06:02True story, I've been avoiding these people for my entire life.
06:05If there's going to be a traumatic moment, or death, or disease, or ailment, don't tell
06:11me.
06:11So today, I opened up my apartment to a woman named Colleen.
06:14The first thing she did was sage me down to clear off my negative energy, and bad sign,
06:20the fire alarm went off.
06:21Demonic feather fan.
06:23Oops.
06:26So, all I need from you is to take some deep breaths.
06:30She could sense my fear and anxiety, so we did some breathing techniques to calm me down.
06:35Nice, deep yoga breaths.
06:36Is spirit in the room?
06:39So, my pendulum turns clockwise when it's a yes.
06:44She discovered that a female spirit was in the room with me, and upon further questioning
06:48of the pendulum, we found out that it was my grandmother, Beatrice.
06:52So, Beatrice is here?
06:53Beatrice.
06:53Interesting.
06:54I have never met Beatrice before.
06:56She passed away long before I was born.
06:58My grandma's my spirit guide, too.
07:00It's very common.
07:01My middle name is Beatrice.
07:02Well, if you're a name for her, of course, she's going to stay close.
07:05There you go.
07:07At Lucy D. Fink.
07:09It was kind of nice to hear that she was there with me, and that she's my spirit guide.
07:13Colleen told me some crazy stories.
07:16She's seen and spoken to ghosts.
07:18She told me some things that would make the hairs on anyone's arms stick right up.
07:22But, by the end of our session, I was not scared anymore, and I was so happy and proud
07:26of myself for getting over the fear.
07:32No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
07:35Wait.
07:36Oh, my God.
07:38No!
07:40I need to hold a tarantula.
07:43Ask any of my close friends, and they will tell you that I am so afraid of honestly all
07:47bugs, but mostly giant bugs.
07:50Trying to figure out where to go today, I Googled giant bugs and was led directly to Ryan
07:56the bug man.
07:58A guy who has over 150,000 insects and brings his collection on the road for educational
08:04programs.
08:04My cameraman and I rented a car and drove three and a half hours today to Pennsylvania to
08:09visit Ryan and his bugs.
08:11If you stuff a tarantula in your mouth and it bites you, it's not going to kill you, but
08:15it's going to bite you because you stuffed it in your mouth.
08:18It doesn't want to be in your mouth.
08:19The first insect that I held was a scorpion.
08:22Oh.
08:23And this is Kevin.
08:24His name was Kevin.
08:26Hollywood loves these.
08:28When you see scorpions on TV, nine times out of ten, they're big ones like this because
08:33they're totally and completely harmless.
08:35And none of this stuff is going to hurt you.
08:37There you go.
08:37Kevin!
08:38Hi!
08:39That's Kevin.
08:40After holding him for a little while, it was sort of just like a black lobster was in
08:44my hands.
08:44Not creepy at all.
08:46He was really cute.
08:47We became friends.
08:48That's really all there is to it.
08:49Next, I moved on to probably the most disturbing part of the day.
08:53The hissing cockroaches.
08:56Okay, so...
08:56Not such a big deal.
08:57Do this.
08:57We'll start on small.
08:59Okay.
09:00After he put one and then two and then seven in my hands at once, I calmed down.
09:06Wow.
09:08Flatten out your hands now.
09:09It's pretty cool.
09:10There you go.
09:12Oh, yeah.
09:13And last but not least, the tarantula.
09:16These are the classic pet shop, buy a pet kind of tarantula that you can find.
09:21There are no deadly tarantulas anywhere on the planet.
09:24Really?
09:24Nobody ever died from a tarantula bite ever.
09:27She's so light.
09:28And at first, I thought she was incredibly creepy looking, but after she sat in my hand
09:33for a few seconds, I realized how sweet and innocent and harmless she is.
09:38By the end of my hour-long visit, I was totally BFFs with each and every creature.
09:44This is Jack.
09:45And I have to say, this fear is the one this week that has really turned my life around.
09:50I can confidently state to the internet with 100% certainty that I have gotten over my fear
09:56of spiders and all insects.
10:00This week made my heart race.
10:02It made me scream.
10:03It made me more physically uncomfortable than I've been in years.
10:07But I did it!
10:08Thanks so much for watching and let me know what you want to see next time on Try Living
10:11with Lucy.
