00:04I do believe that if you have female storytelling, you also have more
00:08authentic female characters. This is the first time I've watched 20 films in 10
00:14days, and I love movies. And the one thing I really took away from this
00:20experience is how the world views women from the female characters that I saw
00:27represented. And it was quite disturbing to me, to be honest. And there are some
00:32exceptions, I will say. But for the most part, I was surprised with the
00:38representation of female characters on screen in these films. And I do hope that
00:44when we include more female storytellers, we will have more of the women that I
00:49recognize in my day-to-day life. Ones that are proactive, have their own agencies,
00:54don't just react to the men around them. They have their own point of view. We
01:00will prevail. Why? Because women are strong. We are powerful, formidable. We are a force
01:10to be reckoned with. Women are half of the population, and we're not going anywhere.
01:17Eighty percent of single-family homes are raised by women. I don't think women need
01:22to be taught to be more responsible. They're the ones that raise in the children.
01:25There's also misinformation out there. Like someone wrote an article once that said
01:28that I made a certain amount of money for the Martian. I made less than a quarter of
01:33that in reality. And so people are already saying, well, yeah, she's making a lot less
01:37than her male co-stars because she's making this. I made less than a quarter of that in
01:41reality. So there is a huge wage gap in the industry.
01:44Planned Parenthood is the reason why I have a career that I have. I'm the first
01:48woman to go to college in my family, and I'm the first one to not have a baby when I
01:52was
01:52a teenager. And it's because Planned Parenthood. It's where I got my sex education. It's where
01:57I got birth control pills. My family was very poor, and we didn't have the money for a contraceptive.
02:03So it's a really important organization to me.
02:06A few years ago when I was saying I was a feminist, I noticed that a lot of young women
02:10were nervous
02:11to say that about themselves. Just like women in the past were nervous to say that they were
02:16suffragettes. And now I've noticed men coming forward and saying that they're feminists,
02:21and people realizing if one group is being discriminated against, all groups are.
02:26Working in this industry, you feel like you're surrounded by all these open-hearted, progressive
02:31people. And then to have a film like Moonlight Wind, you go, yes, okay. We are an industry
02:37that is moving in the right directions in terms of equality and not discriminating against
02:41any group. It begins by supporting other women and embracing this sisterhood. Because
02:49we know that each woman's accomplishment is a victory for us all.
