00:00I think intersectionality.
00:02Intersectionality.
00:03Intersectionality.
00:04It's the crossing of not only your ethnicity,
00:07but other aspects of identity, such as race.
00:10Where you live, your economic status.
00:13Your religion and your sexual orientation
00:15and your ethnicity, your gender, all those things,
00:17and how they're impacting the way you're moving through the world.
00:21More recently, I would identify more as being black than being a woman.
00:24I see myself as an intellectually curious person.
00:27My sexual orientation is my favorite thing about myself.
00:31I'd say gender is pretty high influence on my life,
00:35and that's how I identify.
00:37I am fortunate to have Caucasian futures
00:39that might make it easier for me to navigate in the world.
00:43A lot of it is how we are or have been conditioned.
00:47We've been conditioned by the media.
00:49We've been conditioned by our surroundings.
00:52We are conditioned by what we see.
00:55We're not doing enough to necessarily address the differences within women.
01:00Women need to be at each and every table,
01:03and not just one to represent all.
01:05But you have to realize, like, women are also leading very different lives.
01:09We're so multi-faceted as individuals.
01:12I just come across so often how comfortable men are
01:15in ways that I wouldn't feel as comfortable.
01:19We're all born, and we don't start on the same level,
01:22and I think that's a concept that a lot of people just don't understand.
01:26You as a transgender woman, you as a woman of a different faith,
01:29we all have these different struggles,
01:31and none are less than or greater than.
01:34The old school idea of diversity would be, like, one Asian kid,
01:37the kid in a wheelchair, the black kid, and, like, the white girl,
01:41and it's like, black girl would never hang out, so I don't believe that, right?
01:44We need to see images that allow us to know that you acknowledge us,
01:49that speaks to me in a language that is inclusive.
01:52I think a lot of commercials are just the typical white family,
01:58like, one boy, one girl, happy married couple.
02:02A show of, like, a nice, normal black family doing normal family things
02:06during a white TV show, that's true diversity.
02:10A lot of times, there's money to be made in perpetuating a stereotype.
02:15No matter what we do, we're all going to be different,
02:18but that doesn't mean we can't treat everybody
02:20with equal opportunity and equal respect.
02:23Having a diverse workplace makes people work better.
02:28I think you learn from each other,
02:29and I think, ultimately, you're more effective in doing your job.
02:33Everyone lives in bubbles, no matter who you are,
02:35but I think it's a very good thing to expand your bubble.
02:38As wide as you can, it won't pop.
02:42Different perspectives and world views is incredibly valued.
02:45If the company is inclusive,
02:48that sort of cultural competency will follow,
02:50but it's only if those differences are celebrated and inclusive
02:54and valued at the same level as everyone else.
