00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down the 20 best kills brought on by monsters, beasts, and other kinds
00:07of mutated horrors.
00:08We will only be including supernatural creatures on this list, so animal villains like Jaws will not be included, deadly
00:14though they are.
00:20Number 20. The Pharmacy. The Mist.
00:22Listen up. We're going to the pharmacy. We're going to bring back some supplies. Also, there may be people trapped
00:30over there who need help.
00:31Stephen King's creatures are notorious for being pure nightmare fuel, but the mutated otherworldly spiders in the mist take body
00:38horror to a new level of cruelty.
00:40When a desperate search party ventures into an abandoned pharmacy for medical supplies, they stumble upon a number of people
00:46wrapped tightly in thick, suffocating cocoon webs.
00:49Before anyone can properly react to the gruesome discovery, spiders start erupting from the stomach of a military police officer.
00:56The unlucky Mike Hatlin is then sprayed with a glowing, corrosive silk that immediately dissolves his skin upon contact.
01:02This sequence is a claustrophobic masterclass in pure terror, with many unique and stomach-churning kills to boot.
01:09I've got it, he's dead! Get out of here! Let's go! Let's go!
01:12Come on! Come on! Come on! Come on! Come on, Drake! He's dead!
01:16Number 19. Exploding Behind the Screen.
01:19Cloverfield.
01:19Run! Okay, run! Please run!
01:21Hey, let's start running! Let's run! Let's run! Let's start running right now! Let's start running now!
01:25Run! Run! Run! Run! Run! Run!
01:27Found footage horror relies entirely on immersion, and Cloverfield leverages this perspective to deliver one of the most jarring shocks
01:34in the giant monster genre.
01:36After being bitten by one of the parasites in the subway, Marlena begins suffering from catastrophic internal hemorrhaging.
01:41Her eyes begin to bleed, and she reports feeling weak as frantic military medics rush her into a sterile medical
01:47tent.
01:48Crucially, director Matt Reeves never gives us a clear view of her final moment, but that's probably for the best.
01:54Instead, we only see her silhouette behind a translucent canvas curtain, before her body swells and violently pops.
02:01Leaving the specifics in the viewer's imagination makes her death exponentially more horrifying than any standard CGI gore could accomplish.
02:08Settle down! There's nothing you can do! There's nothing you can do for me! It is over! It's over!
02:13Number 18. The Wooden Man's Revenge. Oddity.
02:17Speaking of her sister.
02:23I came today while you were asleep, Dani's sister sent it.
02:27What's in it?
02:28Irish horror is given a spotlight with Oddity, an atmospheric film centered around a blind medium who uses cursed artifacts
02:34to uncover the truth behind her sister's murder.
02:36Her most unsettling tool is a hollow, life-size wooden mannequin frozen in a wide-mouthed grimace.
02:43For the vast majority of the movie, this wooden vessel sits completely immobile, looming threateningly in the background of a
02:49dimly lit country house.
02:50But when its guilty target is finally cornered, the film boldly refuses to rely on standard CGI tricks.
02:56The unnatural movement of this heavy prop as it animates, and delivers a bone-crushing strike, feels deeply unnatural, beautifully
03:03capitalizing on a primal fear of statues coming to life.
03:06Have I seen this before?
03:09It was my mother's.
03:11And you want me to have it?
03:14Yes.
03:15Do you want to see more monster kills? Then head over to our 24-7 pop culture livestream.
03:20Just scan the QR code on screen, and watch even more lists about cinematic monsters and their iconic scenes of
03:25destruction.
03:25No, I'm going, even if I have to go alone.
03:28He'll die out there, young man.
03:30Number 17. A snack for the Pale Man, Pan's Labyrinth.
03:34Con la tiza, trazaréis el contorno de una puerta en cualquier parte de vuestra habitación.
03:39Guillermo del Toro's dark fairy tale features what is arguably the most haunting creature design in modern history, the grotesque
03:45Pale Man.
03:46Sitting motionless at a lavish banquet table with his eyeballs resting casually on a plate,
03:51the demonic creature seems harmless, until young Ophelia disobeys orders and eats a grape.
03:56Placing his eyes directly into his open palms, the Pale Man awakens with a sickening creak.
04:01Before he even targets Ophelia, he mercilessly snatches her fluttering fairy guides right out of the air and bites off
04:07their tiny heads.
04:08The grotesque act of violence instantly shatters the magical illusion,
04:12turning a wondrous fantasy quest into an inescapable nightmare.
04:15Una vez abierta la puerta, iniciad el reloj de arena.
04:22Dejaos guiar por las hadas.
04:24Number 16. The System Purge, The Cabin in the Woods.
04:28Request an immediate reinforcement, it's code black. I repeat, code black.
04:32Drew Goddard's meta-horror comedy playfully deconstructs almost every major scary movie trope,
04:37but it truly excels when it finally unleashes its massive roster of nightmares.
04:41When Dana and Marty hit the facility's system purge button, the heavily armed tactical team is ambushed in the main
04:47lobby,
04:48as a number of elevator doors slide open and unleash a flurry of hellish monsters.
04:52A chaotic bloodbath ensues as the mesmerizing array of creatures,
04:56from enraged werewolves and giant spiders to a scary clown and a killer unicorn, flood the facility.
05:02It's a beautifully choreographed, violently cathartic smorgasbord of monster mayhem,
05:07with the power to satisfy the wildest dreams of even the most ardent horror fan.
05:18Number 15. A Mother's Love, Barbarian.
05:21We need to go now.
05:22What are you talking about? Why were you in the basement?
05:23We got locked in the basement and there was this hidden area, there was this room.
05:27There was a hidden room?
05:29This is a modern classic known for constantly subverting expectations,
05:32but nothing prepares the viewer for the unbridled savagery of the mother.
05:36Inhabiting the subterranean maze of tunnels beneath a rental home in Detroit,
05:40this towering woman acts purely on its own twisted maternal instinct.
05:44When the poor Keith stumbles blindly into her lair, Mother doesn't just eliminate a trespasser,
05:49she turns him into a toy.
05:50She violently emerges from the darkness, grabs him from behind,
05:54and in a show of brute strength, repeatedly smashes his head against the wall.
05:58It's a horrific visual, and it changes the trajectory of the film into something else entirely.
06:02Why did you come down here?
06:04Someone else is down here.
06:05No, why? Why did you come down here?
06:07Someone else is down here.
06:10What?
06:11Number 14. Target Practice. Predator.
06:19Arnold Schwarzenegger's squad of elite mercenaries spends the entire first act of Predator feeling invincible,
06:25which makes Dylan's brutal death all the more shocking.
06:27Tracked through the dense Valverde jungle by an unseen alien hunter,
06:31Dylan dramatically turns to face his stalker,
06:33and in a blinding flash of blue plasma fire,
06:35the Predator shoots his arm right off.
06:38In one of the greatest practical effects shots of 80s horror cinema,
06:41Dylan's arm falls to the jungle floor,
06:43its finger still pulling the submachine gun trigger on pure nerve reflex.
06:47Before the stunned soldier can process what just happened,
06:50the Predator steps out of active camouflage
06:52and impales him on its massive wrist blades.
07:01Let's go.
07:02Number 13. Torn Apart by the Cenobites. Hellraiser.
07:10Clive Barker's groundbreaking horror film introduced the world to the Cenobites,
07:14a group of extra-dimensional demons who blur the line between pleasure and agony.
07:19In the film's famous climax,
07:20the manipulative Frank caught in his corner by the iconic pinhead and his ghoulish entourage.
07:25Instead of a simple stabbing or slashing,
07:27the Cenobites summon magical chains tipped with meat hooks
07:30that latch deep into Frank's flesh from every possible angle.
07:33These chains are then pulled taut in opposite directions,
07:36bringing a horrifically violent end to Frank.
07:39It's one of the greatest visual effects shots in the history of horror cinema,
07:42and it never fails to make us cringe.
07:44This isn't for your eyes.
07:47Number 12. The Bridge Race. A Quiet Place.
08:04John Krasinski's thriller establishes its ruthless stakes in the very first sequence.
08:09The Abbott family is quietly scavenging for supplies in an abandoned town,
08:13successfully avoiding the heavily armored aliens that hunt entirely by sound.
08:16Everything goes flawlessly, until young Bo activates a loud toy space shuttle while trailing behind his family.
08:22The piercing electronic noise shatters the suffocating silence, and the race is on.
08:27Krasinski brilliantly cuts between the father's desperate silent sprint to save his son,
08:31and the blurry shape of the Death Angel tearing rapidly through the dense trees.
08:35The creature wins, snatching the child in a lightning-fast instant,
08:39and proving that in this terrifying new world, no one is safe.
08:46Number 11. Night Vision Nightmare. The Descent.
08:50Hello! Please! Is there anybody there?
08:55Neil Marshall's piece of spelunking horror masterfully builds a sense of psychological claustrophobia,
09:01long before any actual monsters show up.
09:03But when the crawlers finally strike the trapped women,
09:05the film aggressively pivots into a relentless bloodbath.
09:08The film's most famous jump scare occurs, when the huddled group is plunged into darkness,
09:13relying entirely on a digital camcorder's night vision display to see.
09:17As the shaking camera slowly pans across the cavern,
09:20the eerie green light suddenly catches a pale crawler standing motionless behind one of the women.
09:25The creature unleashes a terrifying screech, that sends the group scattering in a panic,
09:29kicking off a chaotic, flare-lit melee,
09:32where a crawler violently leaps forward, and tears out Sam's throat with its jagged teeth.
09:36Hey, move it! Come on!
09:41Number 10. The Flower Game. Frankenstein.
09:44Daddy, won't you stay and play with me a little while?
09:47I'm too busy, darling.
09:50You stay and play with the kitty, huh?
09:52Bye, Daddy!
09:54Goodbye! Be a good girl now!
09:56James Whale's iconic adaptation of Frankenstein
09:59contains a death so shocking that it was censored for decades.
10:03Wandering the countryside, Boris Carlos misunderstood creature,
10:06stumbles upon a young girl playing by a lake.
10:09Unafraid of his appearance, she kindly invites him to throw daisies into the water to watch them float.
10:13The monster soon runs out of flowers,
10:15and naively believes that Maria will float just like the beautiful daisies.
10:19He scoops her up, and tosses her into the water.
10:21This devastating sequence is every bit as disturbing today as it was in 1931,
10:26and a number of censorship boards required that the scene be cut.
10:29The fully uncensored version of the film wasn't seen by the general public until 1986,
10:34over 50 years after its original release.
10:37I'm Maria.
10:40Will you play with me?
10:42Number 9. Ginza Train Chomp. Godzilla Minus One.
10:53This movie stripped away decades of campy kaiju tropes
10:57to restore the King of the Monsters as a force of apocalyptic destruction.
11:00During his devastating rampage throughout the wealthy Ginza district of Tokyo,
11:04Godzilla methodically targets an elevated commuter train.
11:07Rather than simply crushing it underfoot like a typical movie monster,
11:10the leviathan leans down and bites directly into the lead passenger car.
11:15He lifts the screaming metal carriage high into the air,
11:18chewing casually and indiscriminately as helpless commuters plunge to the pavement below.
11:22The incredible sense of scale, combined with grounded human perspectives,
11:26decisively proved that Godzilla could still be a genuinely terrifying monster.
11:38Number 8. Unmasking the Entity. Smile.
11:42This is not real.
11:44But Rose, your mind makes it real.
11:50While Smile relies mostly on lingering psychological dread,
11:54its finale delivers the pure monster terror.
11:56Throughout the film, a parasitic entity trauma-stalks therapist Rose Cotter,
12:00taking the unnerving form of smiling friends and total strangers.
12:04In the brutal climax, the entity finally drops all of its illusions
12:07and reveals its true form as a towering, skinless giant.
12:11In an unforgettable sequence, the creature violently rips off its own facial skin,
12:16exposing a grotesque structure of multiple jagged jaws hidden within Jaws.
12:20It then forcefully wedges itself into Rose's screaming mouth,
12:24crawling entirely inside her physical body to take control.
12:27It's a hard pivot from what came before,
12:29but a very welcome one considering the quality of the practical effects.
12:32What are you?
12:35Why are you doing this to me?
12:37Because your mind is so inviting.
12:42Number 7. Crushing Rory. Life.
12:45He was my buddy.
12:51It's my fault.
12:52Daniel Espinosa's sci-fi horror film introduces Calvin,
12:56a hostile Martian life form whose translucent physiology masks incredible strength.
13:01When the squid-like creature breaks out of its containment box on the International Space Station,
13:05astronaut Rory Adams rushes into the lab to save his colleague.
13:09Calvin then latches onto Rory's leg before crawling directly into his open mouth.
13:13Instead of a standard sci-fi slashing,
13:15the creature forces its way deep down Rory's throat,
13:18and he proceeds to suffocate and convulse.
13:21But that's not all.
13:22The audience is then forced to watch as his organs get crushed
13:25and consumed from the inside out by the alien.
13:28It's a brutally unique demise.
13:30Rory says,
13:32Don't give me a yellow machine.
13:36Give me a parachute.
13:47Chuck Russell's remake of The Blob updated the classic sci-fi monster
13:51with gruesome, top-tier practical effects.
13:54The gelatinous space creature no longer just rolls people over.
13:57It actively dissolves them in an agonizingly slow manner.
14:01Perhaps the most famous kill occurs when Paul is suddenly ambushed in the doctor's office.
14:05The pink slime completely envelops him,
14:08pulling his thrashing body downward into the goopy mass.
14:11As his girlfriend desperately tries to pull him out by his arms,
14:14the audience is treated to the horrifying visual
14:16of Paul's flesh melting off his dissolving skull.
14:19It's a grotesque and unforgettable image
14:21that solidified The Blob as one of the most ruthless cinematic monsters of the 80s.
14:25Paul!
14:35Number 5. Digestion in the Clouds. Nope.
14:39Welcome to the Star Lasso Experience.
14:43Only at Jupiter's Clay.
14:45Please remember to avoid using your cell phones
14:48or any flash photography during the event.
14:51Jordan Peele reimagined the flying saucer trope
14:54by turning the traditional UFO into a predatory organism named Gene Jacket.
14:59The film's scariest sequence takes place at the ill-fated Star Lasso Experience
15:03when the hungry entity hovers over a dusty rodeo
15:06and sucks up dozens of spectators.
15:08Instead of granting an instant and merciful death,
15:11Peele gives us a claustrophobic look directly inside the monster's digestive tract.
15:15The trapped victims are squished tightly together
15:18in a suffocating tunnel of wet, fleshy tissue,
15:21screaming in agony as the creature slowly eats them alive.
15:24The sound design alone makes this one of the most distressing monster movie attacks of the 21st century.
15:34Number 4. The Screaming Bear. Annihilation.
15:38So there are two theories of what went wrong in the Shimmer.
15:40One is that something in here killed them too.
15:43Is that they went crazy and they killed each other.
15:47Josie nearly got killed by an alligator and Cass did get killed by a bear.
15:52Alex Garland's visually stunning sci-fi thriller is all about DNA, refraction, and physical traits.
15:58It's more interesting than it sounds.
16:00Cass, Shepard, and a small group of scientists head into the Shimmer,
16:03a creepy anomalous zone with rainbow light and mutant animals that resulted from a meteor strike.
16:09While inside, Cass is ambushed by a bear and dragged away into the dark of night while screaming for help.
16:14That's certainly scary enough, but the true nightmare fuel occurs after.
16:18While Cass is killed by the bear offscreen, the Shimmer morphs their DNA together,
16:23resulting in a nightmarish bear-human hybrid that later attacks the group.
16:27The bear has Cass' human skull embedded into its own,
16:30and worst of all, the bear's growl is mingled with the sound of Cass' voice.
16:34We don't know to what extent Cass is still alive inside the bear,
16:37but then again, we don't really want to know.
16:39Don't react.
16:51Number 3. Georgie and the Storm Drain. It.
16:55You don't want to lose it, Georgie.
16:57Bill's gonna kill you.
17:03Yeah.
17:05Take it.
17:07Stephen King's eldritch horror made its debut on the big screen,
17:10and Bill Skarsgård was the perfect actor to bring him to life.
17:13Sorry, bring it to life.
17:15The movie perfectly adapts to the novel's iconic opening sequence,
17:18with young Georgie chasing his paper boat down a flooded street.
17:21It soon turns and falls into a storm drain,
17:24where the kid encounters the seemingly charming Pennywise.
17:27Just as Georgie reaches out to grab his boat,
17:29the clown drops the friendly facade.
17:31His face rapidly transforms,
17:33exposing rows upon rows of jagged teeth,
17:36before he viciously bites Georgie's arm clean off.
17:39The extreme violence inflicted on a helpless child,
17:41firmly established this incarnation of Pennywise,
17:44as a new icon of modern horror.
17:46I'm just saying, let's face facts.
17:48Real world.
17:49Georgie is dead.
17:51Stop trying to get us killed too.
17:52Georgie's not dead.
17:54You couldn't save him,
17:56but you can still save yourself.
17:57Number two,
17:58The Defibrillator Trap.
18:00The Thing.
18:13This movie is packed with wonderful kills,
18:16and they're all brought to gruesome life thanks to the widely acclaimed practical effects,
18:20but none beat the iconic defibrillator sequence.
18:23Dr. Copper is trying to revive Norris,
18:26who appears to be having a heart attack,
18:27but just as he goes in for another round with the paddles,
18:30Norris' entire chest cavity suddenly opens outwards,
18:33revealing a gigantic row of sharp teeth.
18:35The chest-mouth thing then clamps down on Copper's arms and bites them off,
18:39causing the poor doctor to bleed out.
18:41Realizing the jig is up,
18:43Norris then goes full thing.
18:45His head casually detaches itself,
18:47sprouts spider legs,
18:48and attempts to scuttle away before it's burned alive by MacReady.
18:51The mind-bending creativity,
18:53the sense of chaos,
18:54and of course the flawless effects,
18:56makes this sequence an all-timer.
19:04Before we continue,
19:05be sure to check out WatchMojo's 24-hour livestream.
19:08All of your favorite videos in one place,
19:1024-7.
19:11Always on,
19:12always live.
19:13Are you not entertained?
19:16Number 1.
19:17The chestburster.
19:18Alien.
19:19I'm gonna have something to eat before we come back.
19:21I need some more.
19:23Yeah, I'm gonna.
19:24One more meal before bedtime,
19:26I'm buying.
19:27Was there truly ever any doubt?
19:29To this day,
19:30Alien is renowned for having the most famous,
19:32most culturally pervasive monster kill in movie history.
19:35After miraculously surviving the facehugger,
19:38Kane happily sits down with his relieved crewmates for a celebratory meal.
19:41However,
19:42he soon begins choking and writhing in pain on the table.
19:45As his frantic crew attempts to help,
19:47a small, razor-toothed baby alien violently erupts from his ribcage.
19:51Because the actors were intentionally given very minimal details about how the scene would work,
19:55their raw reactions of terror and disgust are genuine,
19:59lending the scene a further degree of intense realism.
20:01As if the brilliant visual effects weren't enough.
20:03Both aspects of the scene are enough to permanently lock this legendary kill into horror immortality.
20:09Inner head sealed.
20:15Anybody want to say anything?
