Brad Kane talks about being chosen as the singing voice of Disney's Aladdin.
Transcript
00:00Be quiet symphony orchestras, ready to go.
00:06I'm Brad Cain, and I was the singing voice of Aladdin in Walt Disney's Aladdin.
00:12So my first audition for Aladdin was sometime in 1990.
00:14I was a senior in high school, and they had already cast the speaking voice of Aladdin's Scott Weinger.
00:19And then one day, I was in Philadelphia, and I got a call.
00:22And it was for my mom back in New York, and she said,
00:24well, they want you to come in, and they want you to sing for them again.
00:27I hopped on a plane, I went back to New York, and they said I got the job.
00:31I'm so close to saying, princess, you can trust me.
00:34You know, before I actually recorded One Jump for the first time,
00:37they sat me down and they showed me a sketch of Aladdin.
00:40What I noticed, drawn into his eye, there was this sort of mischievous gleam,
00:43and I realized I wanted that exuberance and mischief to come through in my voice,
00:47and I think it worked.
00:48Gotta keep it one jump ahead of the bread line, one swing ahead of the sword.
00:53I steal only what I can't afford.
00:55That's everything.
00:56When I first heard the opening notes of One Jump Ahead,
00:59especially, you know, being played by a live 75-piece orchestra,
01:02it absolutely terrified me.
01:06I mean, if you really think about that, a 75-piece orchestra,
01:09right on the other side of the glass booth that you're recording in,
01:12just sort of blowing you back on your heels
01:14and pushing you back and forth on your toes,
01:16but I think that's the energy and the feeling that you want,
01:20singing that song, because Aladdin is terrified in that moment.
01:24One jump ahead of the hook beats,
01:26one hop ahead of the hump,
01:28one trick ahead of disaster,
01:30they're quick, but I'm much faster,
01:32here goes, better throw my hand in,
01:34wish me happy landing,
01:35and all I gotta do is jump!
01:36I'm part of a wonderful legacy,
01:38so that stays with me wherever I go.
01:40It takes me down memory lane,
01:41and it's a great privilege to have been a part of it.
