Samantha Bee of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee chats with Rachel Sklar of TheLi.st about being a daring woman, her go-to uniform, and making the exact show she would want to watch on TV.
Transcript
00:01Hello, I'm Rachel Sklar, founder of Change Ratio on the List, and we are here at the
00:06Tribeca Foam Festival Daring Woman's Summit, the inaugural and hopefully first of many
00:10Daring Woman's Summit, and I am here with Samantha Bee, the host and creator of Full
00:17Frontal with Samantha Bee, 10.30 on Mondays on TBS.
00:21So you are a daring woman, why do you think it's important to be a daring
00:29woman in 2016? Why is that even necessary to have something called Daring Woman?
00:33I know, I know. It's good to be daring. You know what, it's very liberating to be daring,
00:38I guess. I think I'm 46 now, I'm more daring than ever. I often wonder what it's gonna be like
00:44when I'm 80. How daring will I be 40 years from now? Will I be nude, walking the earth?
00:50It's possible.
00:52How are you enjoying Full Frontal?
00:54I love it. It was such a good time. We're making the show that we want to make. I mean,
00:59we went into it, listen, we were blessed to have great collaborating partners. TBS has
01:04been amazing about giving us, you know, they were, and it's, it's so unexpected. It's almost
01:11a non-reality in television where someone comes to you and says, we want you to express your
01:17voice fully. We're not going to interfere with it. We're just going to let you do you. I mean,
01:24I think that almost never happens. So we did, we, we do have that behind us, supporting us. We have
01:30their support of our vision and it has allowed us to do a show exactly as we wish to do
01:35it. I mean,
01:36nobody's really saying no to us. So we're just, we're just going with the flow and making the
01:43exact show that we, that we would love to watch. Like we're making a show that we would want to
01:48watch.
01:48Does social media, does the feedback mechanism that, that we now are under 24 seven, does that ever affect you?
01:56No, I don't, it doesn't. I don't actually, I don't actually pay attention to it. I really don't,
02:03I don't really read much about the show. I didn't read any reviews of the show at all.
02:07They were good.
02:08I just read one because it was because I get the times in my house and it was on my
02:12table.
02:13So I had, I mean, it was, I literally had to, it was staring me in the face. So I
02:17did read that one,
02:18but I don't engage with that too much because I do find that I don't like to, there's enough self
02:25doubt.
02:25I don't need other people to feed that beast within myself. I just like to keep it level and calm,
02:32build the show that I want to build. And I don't really care too much what other people,
02:37I mean, I'm happy that people like it. Like I, you know, that's great. But in a really specific way,
02:43I don't really listen to too much.
02:45How important is the feminist part of it?
02:48It's essential. I mean, it's essential. It's just, it's, you know, it's just in our DNA at the show,
02:53you know, the showrunner, Joe Miller, she's, I mean, we're just, we're feminists at the show.
02:57I mean, it's not something that we, you know, walk around like high fiving each other about every five seconds,
03:03but it's just a reality of the show. It's, you know, we acknowledge it with our,
03:10we acknowledge it every day with our deeds. Does that make sense?
03:14We should all acknowledge our feminism every day with our deeds. That makes total sense.
03:17Yeah.
03:17Um, and I want to ask you about the blazers. You are such a blazer fan.
03:21I love blazers.
03:22You're bringing, it feels like you're bringing the blazer back.
03:24Oh, what? No. Blazers were always among us walking the earth.
03:29I always wear blazers. I'm just so comfortable in a blazer. That's my uniform.
03:34You know, everybody has a uniform. A blazer is my uniform. It makes me feel complete.
03:38It completes my whole, I'll wear any shabby piece of crap. If I put a blazer on top of it,
03:44I feel great.
03:45I can't explain it. I love a shoulder, I love a shoulder pad. I love a structure.
03:50I don't know what I'm going to do if, what if blazers become like fashion poison?
03:57I literally don't know what I'll do. We're just all walking around in sack dresses again.
04:01Or naked when we're 80.
04:03There was a couple of years ago, everybody was dressing like Holly Hobby, and that was really tough on me.
04:07I have to be honest with you. I always just look like, I look so square.
04:11I look so square all the time on my blazers when everybody else is so freeform with their spaghetti straps.
04:16And here I am. I'm just like, I don't think you look square.
04:19Smart. White t-shirt, blue blazer. Hello.
04:23This is actually making me want to invest in a blazer, I have to be honest.
04:26I know. It's a wonderful, it's a key piece. It's a key piece. It can really, you can just,
04:31when you're building your slumbery uniform, you can add a nice linen blazer into it.
04:37You know what? I just bought a linen blazer. It just came to my door in a box.
04:42And I unwrapped it and I went, welcome, friend. You're going to be a big part of my future.
04:48Our offices are cold. Our offices are man temperature.
04:51We can't do anything about that.
04:53We're just going to have to wait.
04:55The temperature of office buildings, we have, women are behind in terms of getting the temperature adjusted.
05:01I'm just saying.
05:03That's also a feminist issue.
05:04Level, that's a big feminist issue. Men just like to work at a different physical temperature than women do.
05:10And we cannot, we have not changed the ratio on that. But we're going to try.
05:15We have so much work ahead of us.
05:17There's so much work to be done.
05:18We're just, all the women are shivering in our office under slankets.
05:24If they could make a slanket blazer, stop the presses.
05:28Oh, a slaser.
05:32I actually think that's an amazing business idea.
05:35Amazing. Okay, get on it.
05:37Someone's got to get on that.
05:38Get on it. In a, in a jaunty wall.
