00:09The Director of Public Prosecutions has successfully appealed Erin Patterson's sentence,
00:15removing that 33-year non-parole period,
00:18the chance that Erin Patterson would have to live the remainder of her sentence out in the community.
00:25The Director of Public Prosecutions said that sentence imposed by the trial judge
00:29was not harsh enough, and today the Court of Appeal agreed.
00:33The applicant's conduct was characterised by an elaborate series of deceptions,
00:37including the false cancer claims deployed to explain the absence of the children,
00:42the false denials of having foraged for mushrooms,
00:46the repeated false assertions as to the source of the mushrooms,
00:49and the destruction of evidence.
00:51The offending was carefully planned and deliberate.
00:54Now, at the same time as this appeal, there was also a second appeal taking place.
00:59Erin Patterson was hoping to have her convictions overturned.
01:03That is failed.
01:04She was hoping to either have a retrial or to be acquitted entirely,
01:08but today Court of Appeal judges have dismissed that appeal.
01:12Now, that appeal was based on grounds, for example, the fact that the jury was accommodated
01:19while they were deliberating in the same accommodation as the prosecution
01:23and as the police informant in the case.
01:26They also said some of the evidence that was let into the trial shouldn't have been allowed,
01:30and they also took issue with the prosecution's closing arguments.
01:35But as I say today, that appeal has failed.
01:37Erin Patterson will spend the remainder of her life in prison,
01:41and it's likely she'll die in prison unless she's successful in an appeal in the High Court.
