Surfing has taught Malia Manuel that life is as unpredictable as the ocean, all you can do if train hard, stay healthy, and turn rough surf into learning experiences.

00:07Something that I've learned from surfing is how to clear a mind. Clear a mind from
00:11can't and focus on the things that you want to do and want to accomplish instead
00:16of the things that you don't want to happen. You shouldn't spend your energy
00:22trying to control something that's out of your control. I'm not in control of
00:26the waves but I'm in control of how I surf them, the way I train, and the healthy
00:31lifestyle that I choose to live. My name is Malia Manuel and I'm a professional
00:37surfer. Growing up on an island you're surrounded by ocean and so it's kind of
00:47bound to be a surfer. Both my parents met surfing and I was just at an early age
00:54at the beach every day because they loved surfing. I remember winning my first
01:00surf event and that was what triggered this whole competitive surfing. Of course
01:07one of the biggest highlights of my young career was winning the national title and
01:11then it kind of gradually moved on to winning the US Open at 14 and I'm still
01:16the youngest ever male or female to win US Open. One reason I pursue surfing is to
01:25overcome challenges and to embrace adversity that comes along with
01:29competing. Without adversity you wouldn't grow and learn as a person.
01:36You only have a limited amount of time to get your best waves and advance on. Be patient,
01:43be conscious of your surroundings, and breathe knowing that you're going to get
01:48the opportunity to take advantage of it. Sometimes competitive surfing can leave
01:55you in disappointment. You pretty much lose more heats than you do wind heats
02:00statistically and so that can be very disappointing.
02:07When I'm in a heat and I have to adapt to a certain condition or a certain
02:11circumstance, try to stay positive, stay happy, kind of will what I want to happen
02:17and try to think what I want to happen instead of thinking about what I don't
02:21want to happen.
02:24I never view losing as losing. I either win or I learn and that's how I've
02:29overcome a lot of different challenges. In life and in surfing it's all about
02:34knowing that you're going to get another opportunity and being positive with yourself.
02:41you
