Meet Bec Brittain. This New York-based lighting designer is not just here to adjust exposure in your kitchen. She is creating a new kind of lighting skeleton — one that elevates the practical medium into a refined art form and overhauls a room in a single switch.

00:00I'm interested in ideas or forms that are a little bit harder to digest.
00:06It's got to be a little bit on the edge to continue to be interesting and enticing.
00:12My name's Beck Britton, and I'm a lighting designer.
00:15Making lighting is really fun.
00:17It's functional, but it doesn't have to be ergonomic.
00:19You get to make sculptures.
00:21I like the boundary that it has to be functional.
00:24It has to perform something.
00:25And within that boundary, I then feel like I can push the edges.
00:33Extraordinary is when someone is really doing their own thing.
00:38When they have managed to truly shed the layers of trying to please others,
00:45and they're making their work.
00:47Otherwise, you're in the crowd.
00:50I really like making things that end up over someone's dining table.
00:54I like being part of an environment.
00:58Expression is that moment where something you've created actually touches someone.
01:02When it's actually received by someone and seen, that's when I think expression has happened.
01:08I definitely put expectations on myself.
01:11That's the other side of drive.
01:12And drive is a great thing, and expectations come along with that.
01:16And so it's about finding that middle ground where there's still personal motivation.
01:22I still have desires.
01:25It is so hard to make things.
01:27These pieces take a lot of time and effort.
01:31It's not as fulfilling for me just to make one light and then make another light.
01:35I want to realize bigger and bigger projects.
01:38I see it as play, as an opportunity.
01:41Only I can make my work.
01:43That will always make it different.
01:45But I will speak to you soon.
01:48I can make it different.
01:48I can make it different.
01:48I can make it different.
01:49All right.
01:49Come on in here.
01:49In here.
01:49Which way is a great thing for you.
